I use a 90° edge on the iron in my low angle jack plane for this specific reason. It acts like a heavy duty scraper and eliminates almost all tear out.

Cool. A simple graphic of the cutting geometry involved here would do wonders to improve the usefulness of this video. A picture is worth 1000 words.

Can we take just a minute to admire that piece of stock! Wow what a magnificent example of tiger maple. Just beautiful! Thanks for the video, had to watch it twice because I missed the lesson the first time through :-)

Nathan Parsons I was just gonna ask. How much per bdft is that maple?

Matt King I've seen it anywhere between $5-15 per board foot, depending on where you source and the thickness. The bigger the piece the cheaper it is per board foot typically.

Nice video, and a lovely piece of wood! I’m intrigued to know how a low angle plane with a micro bevel is different from a regular plane - surely the important part is the final angle presented to the wood (57° in this case)? I have this particular plane, and find that taking light cuts and closing the mouth up helps a lot with tricky wood - and keeping the blade sharp of course!

Yes, I lack the background to understand (what seems to me) the use of a high angle blade in a low angle plane.

The nice thing of this approach is you just have one plane and if you need to tackle highly figured woods you can simply just get another plane blade for that purpose. A standard bevel down plane can also have multiple blades with a micro backbevel but it can never also become a low angle plane. I hope that makes sense

If it's approaching what a card scraper does, why not just use one of those expensive Lie-Nielsen scraping planes?

A spare blade for a no 62 plane with a 45 degree micro bevel and a set of scrapers = AUD 100 versus a LN Scaper plane = AUD 350.... it speaks for itself really.

@bigkiv47 How do you find your Henry Eckert planes mate ?
