Hi! I must admit, I've never known for sure. I've been using steel for a while, but never at production volume. As you say, it's probably wiser to stick with brass for the best tip longevity.
@@A3Kr0n Exposed aluminium will form Aluminium oxide which is highly abrasive. Sponges only are good if you're using leaded solder only and have your tip temperature low, like < 320C. Sponges will cause more thermal shock when the temperature is higher and can create microfractures and pitting in tips.

You're never supposed to use steel wool, as steel is too strong and will wear out the coating on the end of the tip. 100% brass wool only

I've only seen gold colored aluminum wool with flat wire like a pot scrubber. I like a wet sponge.
