Digitalfoto V360 Spinning Camera Rig: WAY Better than a Motorized Turntable

- In this video I review the Digitalfoto V360, a 360 degree spinning camera rig that I think is way better than a typical motorized turntable.
With a traditional motorized turntable, the object spins while the camera, lighting, and background are all stationary. Using something like the Digitalfoto V360, the platform stays still while the camera itself is what moves.
They may seem identical at first, but a rotating camera rig captures totally different footage compared to a motorized turntable.
You can attach the included background board and capture isolated shots, just like a motorized turntable, or remove it to get some really cool parallax and background blur.
You also have the option to mount lights directly to the V360 so they move along with the camera, as well as setting up lights externally, giving you a unique look that you can't get with a motorized turntable.
Since the platform itself doesn't move, you can also interact with objects as you capture footage, adding another layer of interest to your shots.
If you shoot any kind of product or food video, I think the Digitalfoto V360 is a must-have, but what do you think? Is the footage from a rotating camera rig worth that different?

Saw this product when I was doing research on the Orangemonkey Foldio360 products so thanks for this video! Great job. May be using both products soon!
I remember looking into that product a while back too!
Now I have the Trexo Slider mini motorized slider + their pan/tilt modules, and the cool thing is that they come with a turntable plate, so you can use one of the modules as a motorized turntable too. So, I don’t need a dedicated motorized turntable any more!
Great tips . Great review
Thanks for watching!
Love these tips!
Thanks! I don’t hate turntables, just love the spinning camera rig more 😂
Now THAT is a super useful item ! Great video
I think so! Not cheap, but well worth the price to me 👍
@@NewLayer You can do so many creative shots with this. Very nice
Can you share w me what is included please? Do the articulating arms holding the aputure mt pros in the video come with the base kit? @@NewLayer
@@WodiesDad The MT Pro lights and the iFootage Spider Crab arms are the only things not included. Well, and a camera...
I was thinking that was the case lol. The spider arms add almost an extra $300 but that rig is still sweet @@NewLayer
I mean the option to mount lights accessories that you in the V360
Is it better to take an individual picture of each turn of a product or extract frames from video? Will the latter affect quality of the still frames for instance?
Thanks.
Neither is better or worse, it just depends on what your goal is. The most important thing is to have good lighting.
I shoot in 4K at 60fps, so I can grab still frames and they are very high quality. But, if you wanted something super high resolution, you'd have to take photos.
I love Josh Yeo but I would never be able to fit an Orbit in my house.... this however gives a similar look while being more space efficient. It can't do people like the orbit though, but for products, this looks awesome.
If you disassemble or partially disassemble it, it takes up hardly any space and only takes a couple minutes. Also, you CAN use it on people, albeit in a more limited way.
It’s obviously not motorized, and you can’t be right in the center of the orbit, but you can get close, and it’s a cool look with the framing slightly shifting throughout the move. I’ll have to demonstrate it sometime…
@@NewLayer please do!
Mines is still boxed I swear I bought it 21, or 22 😅. May build it soon. Getting ready to film stuff for Xmas!!
No way! You've been sitting on a gold mine for YEARS! 😂
2 questions:
1) are these standard sized rods? Like, do you think I could buy longer ones if I wanted to use a longer focal length?
2) how does this thing pack up? I would want to use it on-location, so I need something that can be transported fairly easily.
Yes they are standard 15mm rods. You could get longer ones for sure, the counterweight would obviously need to move the farther you move the camera back, so the limiting factor would become whether or not there's enough force to bend the rods, which would be insanely hard to do.
The rods and accessories attached to the rods are all tool-less and can be remove quite quickly. Probably within a minute. The plate on top requires an allen wrench if you wanted to make it completely flat packed, but personally, I would leave the "table" portion in tact, and just remove the rods/accessories.
Hope that helps!
give us the name and the link to the two screw down lights that you mount to your v360. The pink or red that you use. thank.
I use the Aputure MT Pro lights (geni.us/aputuremtpro) and the iFootage Spider Crab magic arms (geni.us/ifootagespidercrabma56)
There are plenty of other tube or pocket lights you can use, as well as other magic arms, but these are my favorites for sure!
@@NewLayer thank. your are a help
Would you say the the distance from where the camera is to the circle plate a bit too tight or?
It hasn't been an issue for me since it's adjustable. You can get pretty far away as long as it's counterbalanced with the weights. You could always add something else on top of the weights to get even more reach, but the distance is limited by the physics of what rods like this can hold if I had to guess.
It mostly comes down to the size of your object and the focal length of your lens. I shoot mostly from 28-70mm or so.
I will say, you need to shoot wide like 28mm, but want to use a backdrop, you'll need something quite large. The one they include works when you're zoomed in more, but they can't really ship it with a gigantic backdrop plate.
Like anything else, it has it's limitations. I find it works best for medium-small items, or detail shots of larger objects. I use it for every video I make now!
Where can I buy the two joint brackets holding the light tube?
Those are the iFootage Spider Crabs! Best magic arms in existence!
geni.us/ifootagespidercrabma34
geni.us/ifootagespidercrabma56
What would you recommend for furniture products?
Honestly, unless you have some super huge custom turntable, I would think walking around them with a gimbal is your best bet.
Hey do you have a link for the 2 lights on the side of the arms ?
Yes those are the Aputure MT Pro: geni.us/aputuremtpro
And they are on the iFootage Spider Crab Magic Arms: geni.us/ifootagespidercrabma56
@@NewLayer thanks we are definitely going to get them. Amazing video and you gain a new subscriber. Thanks again. Andy
@@TheRealAndyB. Awesome, thanks for the support!
This looks great! So ... it isn't motorized? But judging from the weight on the other side it keeps turning steadily once you set it into motion? Otherwise you couldn't handle stuff while it's moving, right? I just got a turntable for my product shots which is way better than "nothing at all", but this looks even more awesome. Kinda costly, though. And I need a dedicated studio to use this. My background is f*** ugly at the moment if it isn't fixed. But thanks for putting this thing on my radar!
Correct, not motorized, but the bearings are insanely smooth, and the counterweight keeps it spinning for a very long time once it's going. If you're shooting alone like me, you just hit record, tap it to get it going, and then do what you gotta do.
This is definitely one of my favorite pieces of gear of all time for product shots, so put it on your wish list, haha.
@@NewLayer That's just what I need. It's already on the list. Once I move into a studio which is planned for maybe late 2023/early 24 I'll absolutely get one.
You got a new sub here. Nice channel!
@@WatchMysh Sounds awesome! And thanks for the support.
@@NewLayer Thanks! Keep going :)
There appears to be a third component that connects the ifootage spider arms to the rails. It does look like a clamp can you identify this component please?
After taking a closer look, I see that this is the bracket that comes already attached to unit that makes attaching the ifootage spider arms possible.
Yep those come with the turntable and have regular threaded holes in them, so you can attach something like the spider crab arms or almost any other standard photo/video accessories.
Is that a black wedding ring? Looks super cool :) I have Raubay BTW
Yep, thanks! I lost my original ring 😅 But I like this one better.
Where can I get those lights?
The little tube lights? They are the Aputure MT Pro, which I love: geni.us/aputuremtpro
I have them on the iFootage Crab Leg magic arms: geni.us/ifootagespidercrabma56
Does the lights came with the rig?
Nope, the lights and the arms holding them do not come with it. The piece that clamps on to the bars of the right that the arms screw into DOES come with it though.
I use the Aputure MT Pro tube lights and iFootage Spider Crab Magic Arms.
Aputure MT Pro: geni.us/aputuremtpro
Spider Crab Arms: geni.us/ifootagespidercrabma56
You could use any tube or pocket light and magic arm, but those are my favorites. I did a video on the MT Pro on Instagram: instagram.com/reel/CpGYRk8DszM/
iFootage also makes "light" versions of their magic arms that are cheaper, just without the quick release ends.
@@NewLayer Thank you so much! I really appreciate your answer.
Interesting tool for sure. It seems a bit pricey for what it is though...and you know me, I don't usually scoff at prices.
Understandable. Definitely depends on how/what you shoot. One client project could pay for this if you do the right type of work, and the look is so unique I think it adds a lot of value to your capabilities for food/product videography.
I can shoot half the b-roll for 3 projects in the same time it used to take to do 1. Obviously, used too much it gets boring, but I feel like it’s a guaranteed way to get at least a few great shots with ease.
@@NewLayer This is true...
I want one
I know where you can get one, haha!
On a turntable, the light ARE moving with the camera, LOL.
First!
Looks like you could put like 12x12 square on the bottom for reflective bottoms too. Looks cool, The lights staying on the product is huge
First reply!
Yes! You can put different surfaces and different backgrounds on to switch up the look very easily.
$450. The VITAL info this ad fails to include 🤷🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️
It’s almost like I WANT people to click my links to support me and because pricing changes drastically day to day on tons of the stuff I review. Oh, and I bought this product 😂
Does that change viewing it - if you are doing your research, you have high and low prices, features and benefits. God you can never please anyone and I doubt you make videos, you just criticize.
@@iainhmunro Some people just can't be helped, haha.
I purposefully don't mention pricing in a lot of my videos simply because in this niche, the price can drop by 50% over time. So, it's very important to see the product and its benefits and then click through to see the current price, because if I mention something being $500 in a video, but it's really for sale at $250 at the current time, people will avoid clicking through, assuming it costs $500 just because that's what I said it was at launch.
As much as I like it, it is $640 CAD
@@NewLayer
@@iainhmunro Definitely not cheap. It kind of sucks because I think the price would come down if they sold more units, but they can't sell more until the price comes down.
It's hard to justify if you don't make money off of product/food photos/videos, but if you do that stuff for a living, I think I'd pay nearly double for it and it'd be worth the investment.
