because of those kind of videos i was able to try a dual x99 Chinese board myself and build with some dual xeons a 40core, 32GB monster server water cooled and with nvme drives for under 500€! The board and the entire server works as a VM station now for 5 months non stop! loving it! Thanks again

Those Snowman M-X6 coolers are fantastic. I use one on my Xeon 1680V2 (8c/16t) and even with a 4.5GHz overclock the cooler manages to keep the CPU in check, which I really did not expect! Granted, this was at a locked 100% fan speed and on an open testbench, but I was absolutely impressed by the little snowman.

May be good for a 720-1080p multi-gamer streaming setup on low to med settings depending on the games but you listed all the reasons I stopped bothering with the old 2011 socket platforms or anything from that era. I had a ThinkStation P700 with dual E5-2670 V3's and tested it against my gaming rig at the time which had a R5 3600. The 3600 stomped all over the system in every aspect. It was so disappointing. That's the problem with these 5+ yr old platforms. Even with double the cores and threads or triple them, they have a hard time competing on any level and usually run way more power hungry to boot.

    • @dickdickling9389
      @dickdickling9389 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Damn, imagine an old DUAL SOCKET, SERVER platform being bad for gaming. Simply surreal how that could be the case.
I mean how could LOW CLOCKSPEEDS paired with OLDER CORES be worse than a MODERN CPU with HIGHER CLOCKSPEEDS and LESS CORES.
It's not like most games can only really capitalize on at most 4-8 cores, amazing how a bad use case can result in bad performance, who woulda thunk.

Be interesting to see if shrouding those coolers in a tunnel config like that makes any difference to airflow/cooling - its pretty much the classic rotor-stator-rotor-stator config generally used to build pressure. (to be clear - mostly as an academic exercise - i know it wouldnt be a meaningful diff)

    Hey Jeff,
To add a pair of cents of mine: I own the Asus relative of this motherboard since many years, it's been my homelab mule (Z10PED16).
I managed to make an Asus Hyper x16 board work by manually editing the AMI bios. The weird thing, which might be related either to the BIOS itself or to the chipset, is that only some slots support bifurcation. I had no opportunity to expose the dropdown in the BIOS itself, but I was able to turn one of such slots into x4x4x4x4 mode almost-flawlessly. Looking for the string "x4x4" helped a lot...
Also: one of the slots related to the same CPU started being a bit unstable after the BIOS mod. A BIOS flashback cured it, so it shouldn't be a definitive damage!
Definitely one of my favourite platforms, on which I learned a lot, even tho now I'd pay for a TR Pro to replace all of them!

I built something similar about 2 years ago with 2x E5-2640v3 cpus that were from decommissioned dell servers. 32 core NAS machine ftw, cheap as chips to build. Only downside is power usage, but hey, I’m gone all solar so at least the carbon footprint isn’t as bad as it could be all things considered.

    Hi!
13:30 surprisingly cold temperature for processors. I was also initially happy about this when the temperature of two xeon e5 2680 v4 did not exceed 45 degrees Celsius. But I was very upset when I noticed that the power consumption of the processors is within 65-75 watts. Is there a way to increase the consumption to the base indicators of 120 watts as stated for e5 2680 v4?

It makes sense to have the front panel connectors at the top, considering basically every case in the last decade has all the connectivity at the top of the case. I guess the downside is though it becomes more complex having to do traces down to the bottom of the board to the chipset for USB and audio.

    Interesting.
I ran a Tt P5 for a few years, my takeaway from that experience was a Dustbunny breeding center.
Fairly recently, I build me a TrueNAS system based around one of those chinesium "Dual X79" boards, I stuck it in an old Coolermaster Cosmos2 case and glad of it; turns out that board was actually SSI-CEB sized.. barely any of the standoffs aligned but _FINALLY_; that case looks like it's properly filled.
Props to your cooler alignment, that turbine-like assembly looks almost purposefully designed.

why would a homelaber by one of these vs a user dell r730 (or the like). per ebay, it seems this motherboard by itself goes for $300ish shipped, while one can get an r730(even xd) for around $500 shipped, and that comes with a chasis, backplane, power supplies and what not. The primary advantage I can see is more control over thermal solution (and hence noise level). another advantage might be able to provide more power to videocards, am I missing anything else?

i picked up a different x99 Chinese board that had 1x pcie8 and 1x pcie16. perfect little compute node. i put 10gbe in the 16 and a NVIDIA GT 730 in the 1x. in the future i might flip that for a 2.5gb x1 and an x16 gpu of some sort. you have to be careful though about processors. lga2011-0 or v1 and lga2011-3 or v3 are different. hmm now that im thinking of it, that might have been an x79 problem. i ended up with several of both. there good boards to build with a specific purpose in mind. ill note: the lga2011-v3 boards are capable of pci passthrough. the lga2011v0 are not. and you dont really have to turn anything on in the bios for the v3 moterboards, its built into the processors since they have iommu built in.

4:30- who builds a duel xeon pc to play games? Besides me of course :) my main rig is running duel xeon 2640s... I've thought about upgrading but it isn't worth it in my opinion because the ones I have are more than good enough for me

Brilliant build. I'm trying to cool pair of Turbo OC'd E5-2667-V2's on Patsburg C602:. ASUS Z9PE-D8 WS. Using Noctua MH-D9DX i4 U3 2 fan but outgrew it for 3.8-4Ghz. I heard good about that Snowman so I wanna give them a go. Are these the most performance in smaller footprint for us Dually users? I can pair U12A in 2x fan if need but covers RAM if using my current upward flow orientation

I'm no Chinese but I speculate its a Jin-Whey, Cool as heck but im a sucker for super micro's boards from the time period. The way they modernize old server grade equipment for home use is noble.

it feels that manufacturer just randomly slapped server on the box as I won consider this motherboard to be server in any way (except 2x xeon support), no bmc, audio (why audio on server), no vga so need discrete gpu to display, does it support ecc rdimms?

It anyone needs a budget CPU fan that fits in a standard 4u chassis, assuming in-spec motherboard standoffs, the [Thermaltake ContacSilent 12] will almost always work.
I did a bunch of research before building my first Chinese Salvage-board server, and this is the best I was able to find.
Since then, I have built 4 more (for others =( None that I kept) and I only had a problem once. That single time, it looked like a minor manufacturing defect, and I was able to solve it with some very careful [CENSORED] with a hammer and [CENSORED] in a press.
    NOTES:
    - It is a VERY tight fit. There are just a few mills clearance above the "nubs" of the heat-pipes. Yes mills(thousandths of an inch), not millimeters. If you are going to REST something on the chassis, be careful. I can flex even the beefiest case enough to tap it against the cooler. It hasn't been an issue, even with 3chassis in a stack (not on rails), but some people do dumb things. You have been warned.
    - It is only rated to 150 Watts TDP. However, I haven't had any issues loading it FAR beyond that. I built and tested 2x160w CPUs + 1070Ti + 15x HDDs in the same enclosure. The 'hot' CPU stayed cool enough to avoid thermal throttle, even with all that extra case heat. But YMMV of course.
    - They were ~$30 when I got them. They still are at the time of writing, more than a year later. Not too bad for a 120mm cooler from a "real" brand that actually comes with a fan.

Hi Jeff! First of all, thank you for letting me live vicariously through you.
Second, Ive been running unRAID for several years on an older Intel S5520HC motherboard with two Xeon 5670's and 24gb of DDR3 1333. I'm running several Dockers and 2 VMs. One being a Windows VM I use as a machine for work, and another as my pFsense firewall. But the main function of the server is running my Plex server from docker. Do you think this board would be a worthy upgrade while sticking to a budget, or would you recommend another route? I'm starting to hit some limits of the hardware I have right now, plus it's quite power hungry. Especially when running some dedicated game servers through docker.
Do you have an ultimate unRAID best bang for the buck server build video?
Again thank you for the hours of entertainment and knowledge you have provided.

The real question is if he can get it working on that specific board.
I run a supermicro X10DRi board with dual e5-2680 v4 CPUs, the platform definitely supports bifurcation, passthrough, and vfio, but that board specifically might not

Is it a good idea to keep them at 3.5ghz at all times? i mean, they have that boost for a reason. 48 cores on my desktop seems a bit much. they are pretty hungry for power so unless u go over 3.5 (and i guess u cant) i think its useless.

could we get a vid on the cpu temps? you could show us the temps related to the socket. maybe swap the coolers and swap their directions aswell. also if possible rotate 90° to see if this helps or makes temps worse. this could be a great video (even though the making is pretty tedious)
