    So beautiful and so emotional. Some singers focus only on their beautiful sound, and others emphasize the acting (usually to cover up vocal defects). Kaufmann has the vocal beauty and intense character.

      To my surprise, Kaufmann has said in interviews that it’s quite difficult for him to sing in German, his native language. But he explained that Wagner uses a very old style of language, not modern German, and it would be like English-speakers trying to sing the Saint James Bible!

    Many decades ago when I was in high school and chorus was just fun and an easy 'elective' credit . . . it never occurred to me that singing could get to be so good and that people would love the singing and music accompanying to do so much with stage sets for those singers. Makes it all so much more real.

    Je désespèrais t'entendre un jour Wagner chanté ainsi sur scène ! Domingo s'y était essayé assez brillamment, Peter Hoffmann avait également cette noirceur de timbre si différente aux oreilles des habitués de Bayeuth depuis tant d'années. Quel talent qui suppose un travail harassant et de nombreux sacrifices privés pour en arriver à un tel niveau d'excellence. Admiration absolue. Vielen Dank Herr Kaufmann

    His singing expresses Lohengrin!s nature beautifully this is a moving portrayal and valid to my ears. I am also moved by the live and studio efforts of Sensor Konya. He expressed the tenderness and had strength and color of voice to express the important public side of the character.

    This video of Lohengrin in simply the best ever recorded, and Mr Kaufman the greatest Lohengrin one can see live on stage in video … sublime … we are so lucky to live at the time where such an artist is among us … !!!

    • @Classicvideofan
      @Classicvideofan 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Geron1mo1 I listen to it ... I have no doubts about the fact that some singers of the past can rival with Kaufman in this aria ... that's why I was writing "the greatest Lohengrin ONE CAN SEE LIVE ON STAGE IN VIDEO" ... but even then ... there is an "inner fire" projected by Kaufman that I couldn't find here ... it's very nice singing but the top notes are somehow short/restricted ... (e.g. 4.52 ...) ... and it brings a feeling of being pushing a bit ... anyway opera is also a performing art in my view... and a lively one ... and therefore one can spend his all life listening to his favorite artists in LP CD or any other media ... but then this will not lead anywhere if one is not opening to new artists ... of course one is becoming more "difficult" as one is accumulating more "references" .... but although I think I have some I can greatly enjoy when a new real great singer is emerging ... and Kaufman is one of those without any doubt ... Thanks God there is nothing like a "single" truth that exists in the operatic realm ... and I know by my own experience that not only different so called "knowledgeable" people can have a different - often opposite - opinion about this or that .... but that one is himself going thru periods of time where one is immensely attracted toward a certain singer/voice (I could not unstick from Callas for years and it took me long to finally get in real touch with some others "goodies" like Miss Caballe, L Price or Sutherland ...) and even now I have some difficulties to listen to anyone else that Leonie Rysanek in some parts that have been associated with her during so many years (Sieglinde, the Empress, Kotshelnika ... ) or Renée (Manon, Marshallin, ...) so there is nothing like a static and single truth ... ;) ... thanks anyway because I did not know this singer ...

    Oh my.. No, THIS is his best Lohengrin, even better than in Munich. The sheer perfection of his vocal timbre here is mind-boggling. Not sure there has ever been as smooth, rich and velvety a tenor voice. And the acting.. 'Oh Elsa!' has so much heart-wrenching pain in it that it is almost too difficult to watch. Blown away.

    • @artshouldbebeautiful6407
      @artshouldbebeautiful6407 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ArtShouldBeBeautiful Great shame, though, that he's sacrificed his family for all these achievements. That is most certainly nicht gut at all. A very serious case of putting the temporary above the eternal. Stardom is truly a huge temptation few can withstand against, and unfortunately classical musicians are no exception. If you look at the lives of even just the great conductors of the last century or so, how many managed to have a lifelong commitment? Maybe about 10%. And worst of all, in our fallen world this seems to be considered almost heroic by many, yet in reality it is a deep spiritual tragedy that casts long shadows over many lives because it is a serious contradiction to God's will, and the less it seems to affect the person in question in their other endeavors, the more somber the picture because speaks of a sad state of the soul. A sad consequence of idolatry, music being the idol. I pray he abandons this pretty new woman and returns to make his family whole again. With your priorities back in order, Jonas, though you are great, you will be even better, and for longer. And most importantly you will end the lifelong tragedy you are inevitably causing your children.

    Yes, I have the whole video of this production for the LaScala season's opening in Nov-Dec 2012. This is a weird production directed by Claus Guth, very very psychological interpretation and need a lot of guessing. But JK was wonderful (as usual) as Lohengrin. Anette Dasch, stepping in at the last minute in place of Anja Harteros, did a wonderful job. Of course she had sung this with JK in 2010 at Bayreuth and also in 2011. But the interpretation of almost psychopath Elsa was difficult and she was very convincing. Lohengrin was barefoot from the beginning to the end except for a short duration at the wedding. I was worried that JK might catch a cold or flu, walking in the water in Act III. Oh, what opera singers have to do to be good and credible as characters the directors dream up with!

    • @artshouldbebeautiful6407
      @artshouldbebeautiful6407 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hanako5100 Yes, I agree. I don't get this whole thing with the physical torture of the singers - why you would want to make them physically even in the least bit uncomfortable when they're working so hard?? I don't know that walking in water (it's probably warmed) can bring on illness, but certainly can't imagine it being comfortable, which i would think can cause stress and tension. I mean there's soooo much you can do to create drama, but these directors just have no imagination, not artistry, they go for the jugular, the cheap eccentricity effect. But considering this sounds like maybe Kaufmann's best Lohengrin ever, seems he dealt with all of it just fine. However to me the whole production just looks ugly, and bare feet totally don't jive with the beautiful music, but what are you going to do - that's the trend. The Munich one was even uglier - a stage full of sloppy looking tee-shirt clad weekenders. Sorry, the plumber look is just completely at odds with Wagner's music. Tasteless and awful.

    It is a difficult task to comment this due to the beauty of the piece. Kaufman is for sure one of the best Lohengrin of our days. However there are more convincing performance by him in the same role. I am not convinced at all by the direction of Baremboim. Baremboim is/was a great pianist but he is overestimate as a conductor.

    Wann hat man schon mal einen so schönen Lohengrin gesehen? Ist doch großartig, wie er da im Schilf kniet und leidet.
    Sein überdunkeltes Timbre ist auch Geschmacksache, vor allem hat er aber ein total sichere Höhe. Nicht umsonst hat er sich so lange schon gehalten.
    Dagegen ist doch die Ortrud einfach gräßlich , fast schon eine Stimmruine.
    Auf der anderen Seite ein Pavarotti mit dem klein gehaltenen Ton und dem klanglosen Piano hat mir auch nicht immer gefallen.

    Im not a fan of kaufmann. Ive heard him before and was not impressed. But here he surpises me. His tone is very dark and since the volume is lower and his interpretation more understated as befits the music im impressed. But as soon as he starts projecting more the lovely tone is gone. For me there was only one who sang this revealing its true music. Melchior.

    I drove almost 4hrs alone, on a cold winter day, to see a screening of this performance. I'd do it again -- and especially for this sequence. It remains in my memory as one of the most beautiful, peaceful, and happy moments of my life. Thank you JK, thank you theaters for screening it, (however far from me), thank you for posting this clip. You made my day.

    Jonas is the perfect knight in a terrible imperfect world... He is Parsifal and he is Lohengrin .....the music is unsurpassed and his interpretation stunning. I am always so moved by this that by the time he starts mein lieber I am weeping so much that I cannot see the screen(not a bad thing) and my blurred vision can conjur up all those visions that Wagner wanted us to see. I just love this.

      Me too. I saw this production in Paris and I was in tears. Deeply moved not only by his voice but his moving interpretation of the knight lost in a world that doesn’t understand what his mission is and want to destroy him. Kaufmann is great to interpret that wounded purity. Wonderful. A great Lohengrin . ❤️❤️❤️

  • @petergraham8681

    Herr Kaufmann, PLEASE, if you must sing Wagner now, stick with this (Lohengrin)
    Parsifal, maybe Eric in Holländer, perhaps (?) Walther. This here is really wonderful
    but stay clear of TRISTAN, SIEGFRIED, & TANNHEUSER for the moment, anyway. Your SIEGMUND is also fine, so I hear, but its a bit low for the tenor, like
    MAX in DER FREISCHÜTZ (which suits you very well in some ways) so PLEASE
    be careful!

    • @archcorenth
      @archcorenth 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      stay clear of Tristan? have you heard his Wesendonck Lieder? He'll be the best Tristan ever. It's too bad the best Isolde (Waltraud Meier) is now too old to be his co-star.

    • @petergraham8681
      @petergraham8681 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Comparing the relative challenges of TRISTAN & the WESENDONCK Lieder is bit like attempting to move from ALFREDO
      (LA TRAVIATA) to OTELLO & surviving
      the results.

      Ein guter Tenor muss wissen( oder sollte wissen) was gut für seine Stimme ist. Er kann nicht irgendwas singen! Fritz Wunderlich wusste das, und hat sich eisern daran gehalten. Darum hat er auch noch kaum Wagner gesungen, nur den Steuermann und Walther von der Vogelweide. Er starb ja durch einen Treppensturz vor seinem 36. Geburtstag. Für mich, der beste Tenor den es jemals gab und je geben wird, aber natürlich, das ist Geschmacksache.
