      This is clutch! EQ'ing is so important but also different every time, so it's important to see it like this. Compression next!

    This is the best channel on own category on TH-cam. There are many channels on here but Austin makes it very pro way in contently and visualy. I enjoy while watching him like i am watching for a tv show :D
    I have a big problem on my vocal. not other vocals. just with my vocal takes. when i works with my friends vocal i can make it sitting on mixing. but i can't make my own voice sitting on the rest of the mix. i can't determine what is the problem. :/

    Subtle differences, but they sure matter! Well done on choosing an interesting topic, man!

    • @MakePopMusic
      @MakePopMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Subtle differences are the best when it comes to EQ. Luckily, Landon sent a pretty fire vocal so I really just needed to put it in the right space with the rest of the music bed. Sometimes it takes WAY more than this, but the same principles and mindset are used to get a different end result :D

  • @aleksamrkela831
    @aleksamrkela831 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good call using a dynamic EQ instead of a regular one to tame the midrange! Using a deep bell cut on the midrange (especially the low-mids), like most tutorials will have you believe, leaves your vocals sounding really thin and weak. Colt Capperune said it well: magic is in the midrange!

    • @MakePopMusic
      @MakePopMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely definitely definitely! I used to absolutely GUT midrange if I wasn't careful. Don't get me wrong, that 200-500 region can RUIN a good vocal if it gets boomy or boxy, but being able to tame those words (especially in a dynamic performance and a dynamic melody) does a massive difference than just doing a static cut.

    • @MakePopMusic
      @MakePopMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Could be the source recording isn't great, or you're just doing way too much to the vocal mix! Normally, a solid recording and less-is-more processing gets the job done!

    • @MariooDisco
      @MariooDisco 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MakePopMusic Thanks for the advice :) Generally, levels look good, solid mic and preamp (neve) , but i also got warm audio WA76 + WA2A in the chain before the signal hits the audio interface and maybe I might have messed up something there, though i only do 2-3db just to get the signal less spiky ... anyway, You do a great job!, haven't seen so informative content on youtube in a while :) ...

    • @MariooDisco
      @MariooDisco 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Just an update to my original comment, after a looong time messing up with the audio, (with your advices in mind) it look like the most neuralgic point of my messed up vocal mixing was volume staging .... with every single added plugin I didn't really took enough care to keep the input/output levels right, so despite the output of my vocal bus was ok, the vocals were already over/threated as every single plugin in the chain outputted distorted signal at some point, not very noticeable but with let's say 7-8 plugins in the vocal bus chain, the signal was finally drained from its dynamics enough so it sounded like a crap ... Now it is hell better ... So what has helped me and may help others was: Keeping the levels right at every stage, not adding many (if at all) plugins on every vocal track, but instead doing the main work on the bus channel instead .... and of course more work with the EQ :)

    I have a question. What's the point of using the vmr eq if you already have a parametric eq, which is more versatile

    • @MakePopMusic
      @MakePopMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Using something like the analog modeled EQs can add a nice bit of character that you won’t get from something like Pro Q or Infinity EQ or stock parametric EQ. I like blending some analog or analog modeled gear in my chains just to make sure everything isn’t too flat and lifeless.

    • @MakePopMusic
      @MakePopMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're all in the box, just make sure you're not clipping on your way out. Other than that, just adjust your gain to hit your plugins where you want. For example, if you want something to hit a compressor harder, send it in at a higher gain. Other than that, just get everything level and make sure you're master out isn't peaking.

    • @MakePopMusic
      @MakePopMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Use a couple different compressors that are each doing like 3-5 db of gain reduction. It’s called stacked compression. So you still get the benefits of compressing decently hard, but you’re not taking like 15 db out with one single compressor making it kinda wonky.

    PS Your tutorials are amazing but one tip of feedback: your face and glasses are always a bit shiny or reflective. Could you use a softer light or light box or try a subtle amount of neutral face makeup - akin to TV & film makeup.
    There are some tricks to getting rid of reflections in glasses but I didn't watch the video, but you could do a quick search on TH-cam and I'm sure you'll find them. Would/could make your videos look even more professional. I hope you find this feedback useful. Nothing sinister intended. :)
