There are various types of bootlegs. Sometimes, these are made using factory molds and workers run the machines after hours using their own materials. Sometimes, these are QC rejects from official batches. The paint is usually a giveaway as it tends to not be as clean.
This looks like it may have been a QC reject.

The problem here is the box, it could have been a QC reject like you said but the box clearly isn't original, it's missing the logos and the authenticity stickers around. Maybe that's how they do it but I really don't see manufacturers having to print different boxes for this situation.

@@weet6168 if I was running the factory I'd sell the QC rejects to my mate who runs a shop down the road. He buys them up and adds his own box. .. simple. Then the factory can claim whatever on their rejects and nobody is any the wiser!

There are bootlegs out there that are good. I got a bootleg of the Mayfex spiderman from into the spiderverse and that figure is fantastic!

Dude I worked for a Chinese team that made bootleg figures and 3D models, they are very strict with the details. We usually spend a week or a month on just one figure or model. So it makes sense that most of the figures are high quality.
How do they produce them?

They are produced back in China, the materials I have no idea what they use but from experience it ain't that good. They are also cheap because we are paid less, we don't need to pay the owners of the characters to use said characters, the material for sure are cheap, quality control is not the best and the softwarewe used were just cracked version. I can't speak for all the company in China but that is how that specific company operated.

That's crazy! Especially seeing the quality of the bootleg, I remember times where you'd see a fake from a mile away.
Bootlegs really have come a long way.
Personally I only get and own authentic figures and Nendoroids, you have to spend more money but you're guaranteed quality (in most cases anyway, looking at "Insight"....).
Even the packaging tends to be spot on minus a few telltale signs.
"bootleg" is usually the same Chinese company that makes those official figures but without the branding

I love comparison video's between boots and the real deal. I used to check a lot of those ehen I was collecting Transformers Masterpiece figures. And from there I enteren the realm of Third Party...but yeah, personally I find comparison videos between boot and official product very helpful. Specially when you want a figure because it looks cool but you don't know anything about the franchise it's from so you don't want to pay the full price for it or your on a budget.

The bootleg really seems like a good choice if you want to give a SpongeBob Nendoroid to a younger cousin but you don't want to spend so much for a figure that would most likely be mishandled.
5:30 Reminds me of a creepy/unsettling black and white photo of a SpongeBob costume where it only has small irises as the eyes. It became not creepy when you see the original colored photos and realizes that he actually has scleras (the creepy one has the color blended with the yellow parts) and the irises are the holes for the wearer to see.
I keep thinking about buying boots to repaint/customize. I buy the real one, then it's so good that I don't want to ruin it. Or something like your photos with fireworks? I don't want to burn a legit figure. But a bootleg? A lot less stressful to set off fireworks with.
The stand is just copy of the older nendoroid stand

Some boots are just so well made! I've seen so many good Dragon Ball Z and Naruto boots that are definitely worth it! Plus, I have no ideia how, but they make some cool figures of characters fans wants that companies don't seem to release officially

If you want to collect as a hobby. Bootlegs aren't worth it. legit figures can be resold and may even go up in price (because most legit figures are limited release ). there's an entire community for collecting in general, there will be people willing to buy (depending).
But, If you just want a decor piece for your room, and you don't really care about anything else. Then it's your money. Who cares.
(I'm saying this as a hatsune miku figure collector. I don't think I've ever sold a figure for less than I brought it, and I have multiple figures that have gone up in price.)

Get some warhammer paint and fix the imperfections yourself.
Some Bootleg Nendoroids are good enough to be honest. But not all. Especially if it has intricate details.

you can fix loose joints with superglue, put some i the joint then keep moving it until dry
Its worth buying the bootleg if you let it play on kids,
But, if your unto collecting, the legit one is a must have because of the resale value on the right customer.
Someone probably already said this, but another good way to tell if it's a knockoff just by the box is to look for company logos and such on the box. If the licencing stuff is missing then it's definitely not the real one. For example, the logos at the top of the box are missing on the knock off box.
The Bootleg Seems to be based off GoodSmile Company instead of the Original Packaging
I guess buying a bootleg of SpongeBob is better than the real one just so nick doesn't get money they don't deserve and also SpongeBob may as well be free to all at this point

both probagbly came from the same factory, the bootleg version is the defect and they didn't want to throw it out.
You should check out baiwei dom shockwave figure, its a really good bootleg and may even be better than the original ss figure
theres a surprising amount of Transformers bootlegs that are really good. Baiwei Star Leader is a bootleg of studio series Optimus Prime (i forget which version because theres so many) and its absolutely amazing. i got the Nemesis Prime deco with green flames (theres a Nemesis Prime with purple flames, a standard Optimus Prime and an Ultra Magnus) and i love him. theres also a weapon pack for him if you get that, you get a figure with diecast feet, two different faces, two different chests, 3 guns, 4 swords, a shield, 2 axes, 2 hooks and 2 knuckledusters. all for about the same price as the official ones first release. the plastic is good too, not as good as the official hasbro stuff, but still feels solid

Manufacturers should really calm tf down with their prices, I've been collecting since around 2017 and nendoroids (as example) have really stupidly increased, I get the paint job and quality gets better with time but in the end of the day it's still a small displayable figure that you won't even mind about the high quality bc it will stay on shelves and sometimes taken out for photos, but that's really it.
It's sad to end up just accepting bootlegs more, it was less acceptable before but now it feels really ridiculous to spend 50 or even 100 on original ones now lol.
sometimes they are not bootlegg if they release a fig a week after retail chances are its authentic alliexpress is now allowing personal sales because it takes a long time to get copys of the molds to bootlegg them
CT Spider-man 2099 and the KO Sentinels Spider-man Noir are some of the best bootlegs I have, they are basically as good as the real one for a fraction of the price.
I’ll take it my favorite character is SpongeBob I just like his personality dude he’s so upbeat and funny
when it comes to bootlegs of collectable figures, its genuinely like the only difference is gonna be a slight dip in quality everything else is usually 1-1 but then when it comes to bootlegs of toys you can find in shops thats when it becomes really trash, like to me there are 3 kinds of bootlegs, KO's which are like basically 1-1, knockoff which are where its close but there is a quality difference, then bootleg which is the worst of the worst
The only offbrand items I consider buying are figures
Guys please never buy bootleg nendroids it makes it easier for the bootlegs to get into con's and shops since they think they can get by it

What if they aren't bootlegs? What if they come from the same factory but they didn't pass quality control?
One of the biggest problems with bootleg figures is consistency. You might be getting a fairly competent bootleg, but you might also get a really crappy one.

pretty sure the legitimate figures for that brand are made in china. so likely, its made in the same factory and the "bootleg" ones are produced for chinese market and the "legit" ones are for international market

Can you review Amazing Yamaguchi Catwoman bootleg from AE? Found one for 30 bucks, while the real one is ~100$, should definitely be a bootleg, although the original figure is quite new, kinda surprised they already had time to produce a bootleg.

another way to tell if it is a bootleg is if it doesn't have the brand associated to what it is on it, like say nickelodian for the spongebob, marvel for a spider-man, and DC for a batman. They have to remove the logos no matter what.

People spending $60 on an injection molded plastic figure that most likely costs around $1.20 to make and package overseas is wild.
Material wise maybe, remember molds for plastic injection are expensive and you also have to pay both the artist and the royalties for using the brand, which costs a lot.
