    With COVID-19 and the shortage of filters for the half masks as well as N95 masks, use a surgical mask to cover either the filters of a half mask respirator or the whole mask on a N95. Extra barrier of protection.

    The first filter you said to throw away after exposure. The bit you said "Removes with difficulty", can be and is meant to be removed so the white particulate filter can just be replaced on it's own.
    The filter part number is 3m 5n11 and they can still be found if you look around.

      d1v1s1onby0 Yes I have removed them. The package often comes with two pre-filters in it for just that purpose. But compared to the 6035/6038/7093 enclosed particulate filters, they are just not as safe for our purposes and I would only use them as a last resort, given how tricky they are to clean.

    Hi thanks for sharing. Here in Scotland there’s quite a lot of confusion re so called ‘P3RD’ filters where the ref to ‘RD’ remains unclear in the context of whether they offer less protection from Covid-19 compared to P3 filters. The ones your using don’t appear to state ‘RD’ so I’ve got some added work to do to see whether they’re effective. Keep up the good work abs stay safe.

    It is rather easy to trace the filter or gas cartridge onto a piece of fabric, paper towel or other breathable material. Then cut it to get a pre-prefilter to use as an outer layer. I used some non-woven from old furniture after hand washing and drying it, it seems to repel water droplets, it did not get at all wet when I was wearing the mask outside and it rained. It also helps to make the filters last longer, since it catches the larger dust particles. since it is not the primary filter it is OK to wash and disinfect it by whatever method.

    Our Department here in Queensland has these but we are planning on cleaning the the mask filters in-situ, while still wearing it, waiting for it to dry thoroughly, then remove, with a spotter checking coverage. I feel that this reduces the risk of contamination of the inlet ports during the removal of the filter cartridges. What are your thoughts? DM me if you like or email. Thank for the great video - saves me making one! Stay safe.

      Are you wearing coveralls as well? I work at a different department in Sydney. We appear to be going down the surgical gown/balaclava route for neck coverage. At what point are you cleaning and wiping down the mask? With the coverall still on?

    • @nitramluap
      @nitramluap 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Michael Tobin We are using gown/balaclava or the coveralls (being careful to ensure hood doesn’t contaminate your back when removed). What we will be using will be based on what’s available I think as we’re running out of everything. The respirator is cleaned as the last step, while still on, using antiviral wipes (eg. Clinell wipes) in front of a mirror to ensure good coverage. We’re using sealed cartridge filters and not removing them, just cleaning all external accessible surfaces. So far so good.

    • @staffnsnake
      @staffnsnake  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Michael (again) and nice to meet you Paul. I would not recommend a simple wipe if you have been involved in directly intubating a covid patient. But if you were just wearing it for general use while transporting a patient or in an ED red zone, perhaps it might be okay. I couldn’t say. Here is a link to 3M’s literature on use of their respirators during an influenza pandemic www.3m.co.uk/intl/uk/ohes/segments/healthcare/(9666a)OH_ReusableTechBulletin_lft.pdf

    Is it necessarily a good idea to remove them for cleaning? This could create a entry point for virus particles. Since 6035 filters last months at a time, I usually leave mine attached to the mask during cleaning, clean the whole thing, and store it in a bag.

    • @rickw4160
      @rickw4160 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Excellent point. I recommend a slightly different way, which is to use a suitable disinfectant to wipe down the outside surfaces, including around the cartridge interlock area before removal. Then remove the cartridges, and then wipe back side of the cartridge mating area. Put these aside to dry and for safe keeping. The half face or full face mask should be decontaminated following whatever procedure your local officials are comfortable with. You do need to clean these, as your own resperatory droplets will make the inside kinda funky. The straps also could potentially transfer the virus to other surfaces, not to mention any viral particles you had stuck to your face (but not entered into your body) can be transferred onto the mask as well.. 30ml bleach + 7.5l water, TBquat, or virkon 1% are all acceptable options. Each option has specific steps and times to follow. All require a final rinse of clean water, and then allowed to air dry.

    • @staffnsnake
      @staffnsnake  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No you must remove the filters for cleaning. You don’t have to worry about possible entry points for the virus through the filter aperture. They have static charge and could not reasonably be expected to fall off the plastic housing and into the wearer side of the filter. You must clean and decontaminate the respirator after use.

    • @Now_lets_get_this_straight
      @Now_lets_get_this_straight 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your wanting to add the P100 filter to the cartridge filter, you can use a GM 502 adaptor that snaps onto the face of the cartridge. It has a male bayonet fitting just like the respirator. Otherwise the P100 pancake filter attaches directly onto the respirator.

    How many hours of breathing through the 2135 filters do we get until we have to replace them? 3M literature states that these disk-style particulate filters (2135/2091/2097) can be used for as long as you can comfortably breathe through them, so why do you consider them as only one-time use?

    • @staffnsnake
      @staffnsnake  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      SKMatoBB Because if they are spoiled by droplets then they become an infection risk. 3M pointed that out in communication to the rep I get them from.

    • @SKMatoBB
      @SKMatoBB 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@staffnsnake But that's only because of the textile nature of the filter and the fact that it's surface can't be disinfected like the other filters with a plastic surface, correct? If you don't touch it with your bare hands for the 72 hour duration for which the virus can be alive on the surface after each use, it should not pose any risk and protect you pretty much until it's clogged up by dust and other particles from the environment, right? You just have to be careful not to touch their surface, transfering the virus to your hands and then to your body through your mouth, eyes, etc.. I think it'd be pretty wasteful to just throw these filters out after each use, wouldn't it?

    • @SKMatoBB
      @SKMatoBB 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@staffnsnake Why would the droplets damage the filter any more than any other particulate filter? The inside of these disk-type filters has pretty much the same structure as the replacable pads that you put underneath the cover of the plastic filter. Making the only difference between them the nature of the surface of the filter as I described in the previous comment.

    • @staffnsnake
      @staffnsnake  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      SKMatoBB I guess it would depend on how soon you expect to reuse the 2138 filter. I also suspect that most hospitals would take a dim view of ever reusing any kind of fabric equipment that had been soiled by patient bodily fluids and not actively sterilised. Moreover, there are other pathogens besides SARS-CoV-2 in pharyngeal droplets. I need to stress that the whole exercise of using these 3M respirators is for while we await arrival of medical grade PAPR systems. This equipment is not the plan, it’s the fallback from the main plan.

    • @SKMatoBB

      @@staffnsnake I was talking from a public standpoint, not about hospital use per-se. Mainly about using it for shopping and other necessary activities requiring contact with other people. Adi Andre I am not a rep or an agent for 3M. I only did videos on them because that was what was available. There are other brand out there like Sundström from Sweden that some are using. One hospital in Sydney has those. So you will have to do your own research on the particulate filtering qualities of any filters you get. If you can, you should also get quantitative fit-testing done for whatever you find. The vapour filter components are not relevant to viruses or bacteria. Cheers

      I'd like to chime in here for a bit. Any respirator that pressurises properly works with a P2 or P3 filter. Alternatively you can use military surplus gas masks with 40mm NATO NBC or ABEKP filters which are much more common, cheaper and effective than the type of proprietary connectors you would find on 3M type respirators. Even if the filter itself is expired it retains its particle filtering properties.

For example, you can't take a 3m versaflow and replace it with a 3m 1860 without 2 seperate fit tests.
      Not even hospitals here in the states are doing it, as there are hundreds of registered n95' masks, and we're using what we can get our hands on. and there were NEVER fit tests here in the U.S. for KN95's, as.. well.. they were not allowed here. But their using it.

Not infecting others is a legitimate issue however in a hospital ward intubating Covid19 sufferers, I assume they're already infected and already experiencing high viral load, reducing the relevance of this issue, slightly, to me. On balance you'd be far better off with a respirator and these filter cartridges ( 6035 / 6038 ) as you'd know that the air you were getting was clean. If every staff member had similar there'd be a reasonable expectation of no infections, to them, via the airborne aerosolised or droplet route, I would hope. Many other PPE and other hygiene issues just as important, of course.

      Without modification, it only protects the wearer. Which indirectly protects you, somewhat. By removing the intake and oral nasal cup valves, and pluging up the exaust valve, the exaust would be forced to exit though the filters. it woukd also make the inside of the mask become stuffy, and the visor would fog up in short order.

      the white ones (6035) are equavelent to the 7093's in the states. They are good for the "duration of the pandemic" when used for filtering viruses and bacteria. In theory that could be a month, or two, or three. 3m doesn't say exactly, other than replace when breathing gets difficult. According to some other literature, they also have 1.8x the surface area of the discs, so I believe you probably could wear it in a non dusty enviroment for a few months. That is a big savings over the n95 disposable ( maybe I should say "used to be" disposable, now reusable) masks.The ability to seal test these over disposables are also a big plus in my book.

      @seanl764 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rickw4160 No, that is not true, just look on 3M's filter replacement guide, they say that each cartridge filter should be replaced after 40 hours of use.. If you need the cartridges, they have p100 99.97% filters for sale on ebay for only $32.98 right now, the model number is 3m 60923.

      @@seanl764 I spoke to 3M technical support about using these respirators against COVID and they confirmed the P100 / organic vapour cartridges (model 60921) we are using are safe to use for months. The filters are being used to essentially trap aerosolized water droplets that contain the coronavirus. The water eventually evaporates from the filter and the virus dies. These filters will never clog up the way they would if you were using them to trap particles in a dusty environment. Therefore, you will not have to change the filters. Just make sure you disinfect the surface of the filter and mask after each use. These filters are better than the pure P100 disc-shaped filters which are exposed filter media. They cannot be disinfected after use and therefore can only be used once.

      Sean, directly out of the 9666a OH reusable tech bulletin:
      Q - For how long will a set of particulate filters last in use? A - Filters should be changed when they become clogged with particulate contaminant. The wearer can determine when this occurs as it becomes harder to breathe through the filters. The filters are designed to filter out particles in industrial conditions and in concentrations much higher than is likely to be encountered in a pandemic situation. It is therefore expected that one set of filters will cover at least one pandemic wave, after which they should be replaced for infection control reasons.
      and a direct link if you want to verify yourself. www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=www.3m.co.uk/intl/uk/ohes/segments/healthcare/(9666a)OH_ReusableTechBulletin_lft.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwihlOPi9I3pAhWhlnIEHXhhCvAQFjAAegQIAhAB&usg=AOvVaw0xYJpR3IIWWDlbydZ5Z5vA

      depends on which one your using, and how your using it. The filter media should be good for months in non dusty enviroments. Decontamination is the problem here. You could in theory take off the 2000 series pancake filters after every use and wait a few days- the coronavirus should be inactive by then. You can also try and purchase (or make) what they call rain shield or shower caps which create a hard outer layer on the filter, making external decontamination easier to accomplish. You would basically change filter cartridges only when you have breathing difficulty. I've used them in industral construction applications and they would last 2 weeks in concrete grinding work- pre OSHA silica rules. Now that they have the silica rules in place, I can get about 2 months out of them before It bothers me enough to change it. It should last at least a month (if not two months or more) even if your using it 8 hrs a day 7 days a week. the 2000 series is consecutive layers of decreasing pore sizes. the 7093's is a single layer (which may have decreasing pore sizes, not certain) pleated filter. They each have their pro's and cons in different enviromental situations. If your dealing with people on the daily (i.e. medical field) I'd try and get at least the 7093's or the combo p100/organic vapor style/nuisance filters. These have at least a hard outer shell that you can use a sani wipe or calvacide wipe to clean inbetween patients or breaks, etc. If its just to go food shopping, etc, the 2000 series will be more than adequate, just remember to try and not touch the filter media itself, as any viruses that are stuck on the surface can still come off, and the media have limited cleaning options.

      I have read that UV-C light can immobilize bacteria and viruses. I'm not in the medical profession but have had CBRN training. I took a box, lined it with Reynolds wrap. Attached a UV-C light to one of the lids. When I come home form work, I put everything I've touched in the box, close it off, turn on the light and leave it for no less then 20 minutes. I turn off the light, open the top and walk away allowing the ozone vapors to escape. Come back in 5 minutes and pull out my items, including my protective eye ware, mask, keys, wallet, etc.

    Hey, do you have any information about filter 6075 (of course + P3 pre filter). I was wondering because it is listed as filter for hospitals and laboratories. Does it help or 6035 is better because of the inhalation area?

    • @staffnsnake
      @staffnsnake  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That filter shown here (plus pre-filter) is a vapour filter that absorbs formaldehyde among other organic vapours. So it would present the same issues as the regular paint vapour filter plus pre-filter in that it is difficult to keep clean. The 6035/6038/7093 are better because the filter is completely encased and droplet-resistant, whereas the setup you mention exposes the pre-filter to droplet contamination.

    There are not any kind of filters available on the market to cover up the exhalation port so the 3M masks can be used in sterile environments? Taping the port or using a surgical mask on top of the respirator just to cover up the exhalation port seems like a poor workaround. Given the fact this is an official combination of mask/filters for a pandemic influenza wave by 3M, I would bet there is something to complete the set for sterile environments...

      In theory, yes, it is possible. A single model of disposable mask of similar material was tested and filtration efficiency was slightly improved even.
      It is however more practical to procure multiple filters and paper bags, masks even, if you can afford it. mark the filters with numbers. likewise the multiple masks if you have them. Rotate the filters (and masks), meaning wear first number 1, next time number 2, etc. After use put in paper bag and seal it. Let 3-4+ days pass before you next use them. Longer is safer, store in dry place away, preferably locked up and out of the reach of children and the like.
