For folks looking for a little more detail with regard to how frequently you need to change your filters, here's a help document from 3M that lays down the facts: multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/447121O/filter-change-out-brochure.pdf
Always blows my mind when I see people doing various trades without using masks. Any particulate matter can be severely damaging over time. Glad you are encouraging people to be safe.
Great video as ever, Mark! I've had the 3M 7500 mask for 8 months now, and embarrassingly didn't even realise you could disassemble it like this to clean! Am now doing so! Thanks!
Thank you! I can't do any cutting nor drilling and sanding without my respirator! It really makes it easy to breath in front of a dust shooting circular saw! I can't understand why most woodworkers around my city, here in Peru, don't use even a basic respirator.
I learned this the hard way. If you get sick, clean your respirator before you use it again when you have recovered. I reinfected myself with strep throat. Having it twice in 1 month was brutal.
I literally just bought a mask last weekend and was wondering the proper way to clean the mask. Thanks for giving much needed info at such an opportune moment
Thank you for this. I'm just getting started in woodworking and watching beaucoup ("bo-COO"--French for "lots of") videos, and I'll be watching many more of yours. Nicely done!
Thanks man. I'm using 7500 for years now and wash it when it gets dirty but I never figured out it can be completely disassembled so easily - live and learn I guess :)
Excellent tip just remember to make sure its completely dry before storing and a quick alcohol wipe before the bagging helps kill any bacterial growth.👍
I always spray mine with a light mist of 70% alcohol inside and out, and let it dry. Keeps it sanitary until I can do a more thorough cleaning (once every few weeks). I add a drop lavender or peppermint to the wash water and it leaves a nice slight fresh fragrance. Have not had any deterioration or problems so far and my mask is almost 3 yrs old.
I realized how long it had been since I actually used a finnish on my projects when a reached for my mask and a large spider had made it her home... i just bought a new one and let her have it
I’m surprised he didn’t show the 3m wipes 504/07065 that you should use after final use and storage of the mask after each use. My masks go through some use but I found proper cleaning and storage keep them looking very good.
I seem to be allergic to those 3M cleaning wipes. Even after rinsing it away with water whatever chemical is used in those seems to irritate my nose and throat. Then again I'm sensitive to everything.
I use little rubbing alcohol wipes to give it a wipe down before every use. It helps keep it a little more clean and also helps my face from breaking out.
Great video sir ! I work in a rail grinding service and I clean my 6502QL once a week, but recently I have to buy a new one cause I use bleach to clean it and the mask seems not so well after I use it .
Im a painter by trade so the info on cleaning is not new to me but I'm a new wood worker I just put in a small wood shop and need to remember to use the masks for my wood projects as well thanks for the reminder.
Hey good video my only tip is daily I use baby wipe it wipe my mask out and also painting house or something where your getting a lot of stuff in the air use a rubber band and painters rag or some clean cloth and wrap the two filters and discard them when your don't. Did both of these tricks while spraying airbarrels on school and waterproofing and made life a little easier on me.
Aye man idk if you read these but, I am in University in Greece on a Public Hleath major and our professor shows us some of your videos for maintenance of Cleaning/Disinfecting equipment
Thanks for the great video! I recently started working with resin, and that requires a half face mask like the one you showed in your video, so I've been wondering how to clean it when it gets dirty. I'll be using your method in the future!
Maldita pandemia. Tengo los filtros 2091. De verdad, muchas gracias por tu vídeo.
Noticed that storage is a issue the brand I have you can buy a case for it it's great. Weekly I take a alcohol swab to the in face mask to get any dust out of the crevices not sure but I haven't noticed any reaction with the material it's just quick easy but than I'll give it a major clean every couple of months.
When you clean facemasks use a dish soap WITHOUT citrus. It is an acid and will corrode the plastic parts a lot faster. I learned this when cleaning medical respirators
I think the manual on these respirators say to replace the filter every month (or more often depending on use) I’m just a hobbyist and I don’t spend that much time so I Replace every 2 months.
I am naturally hesitant to believe manufacturers' recommendations on consumable products. Especially with a safety product, I'm guessing they're covering their butts for worst case scenarios.
The Wood Whisperer that’s a very good point, I’m sure they are overly cautious. Thanks for another video, it’s because of your respirator video years ago that I wear one pretty the entire time I’m in the shop.
I don't think mine has a removable front guard and strap. I'm afraid if I try to force it, it will break. I have the Air Gear Pro G-500. I'm new to using these and I really want to be able to clean it as I have to use it every day with my allergies dealing with my animals.
Great videos. Any tips for storing the masks when not in use to keep them clean. I currently store them in a big zip lock bag but dont close the seal until after they have dried. I sometimes forget and the bag stays open letting dust in. Thanks
hi, I have the 6500 series and wear it all the time but I'm finding after using a router or sometimes sanding my nose or sometimes throat hurts and wondering if i'm doing something wrong and getting nervous now. I'm even doing it in my garage with the door open so partially outdoors. I love doing the woodworking that I've taken up past few years but not at the risk of my health so trying to figure out if I need a better mask or what is causing this. I have done the test you showed and seems to be fitting correctly so was wondering if this mask is good but i'm seeing a lot of woodworkers using this one. I've cleaned it before but not this detailed so will give this a go. Any other suggestions I'd greatly greatly appreciate as I don't want my health to be affected doing something I enjoy so much!
If you have a good seal and you’re using good particulate filters you should be good to go. I know it’s kinda gross but are you actually getting dust boogers in your nose? If using something like walnut, are you finding dark wood colored stuff coming out when you blow your nose? If not, I would again think you’re breathing clean air. Another simple test is smell. Do you actually smell the wood when you’re sanding or cutting? If not, chances are you’re good. There is also the possibility of having a mild allergic reaction….but I’m no doctor. 🤓 Hope that helps.
Store the activated charcoal cartridge filter masks in a zip lock bag when not in use. It will keep the activated charcoal from absorbing contaminants when not in use. Dan
Great information. I didn’t know they came apart like that. And I like to think that I inspired you to make this video with the question I asked on a Friday live stream. Thank you!
Thanks for the video Marc, really well done. The other comments regarding storage in a large Ziplock are very good too,. I wipe the inside of the mask to dry it...
Hi thank you for your video! My filters don't have writing on them, but one side is smooth and one side is rough looking. Would you please tell me which side faces out?
Great videos mark! I just subscribed, nearly half a million! I'm a novice Carpenter. I never use masks and don't have any dust collection whatsoever, mind you I mostly use hand planes, files, rasps, mostly shavings not dust is left. I use hand tools so I don't worry about it. My question is should I?
No doubt you don't need to worry as much as someone like me. But there will definitely be dust in the air and how much is something that would need to be measured. I actually have a little particle meter that tells me pretty quickly when I'm putting stuff in the air. Might be worth the investment to find out. That said, most hand tool woodworkers do not worry about breathing protection while working.
Do you remove the vales when using? I just bought a 3m 7500 series and had a very hard time breathing today. I have those massive white filters like yours and are brand new. Was just breathing very heavy and thought you remove those valves now.
Thanks for the information, Marc!! I followed your link to the 7500 mask. I read the information. However, I'm still not sure what size to order. I'm about 5'9", 173 pounds, fairly thin face, like your own. May I ask what size you are using?
Thx for the video. There's a polemic about which cartridge you should wear for the best woodworker protection. Some say yellow ones as it filters most of known paint and varnish solvents. Some says the black ones are better because it filters formaldehyde too which is useful if you use MDF, plywood, OSB or particle boards. What is your wise opinion about that?
The only time I felt I needed something other than the black cartridge was when I was doing ammonia fuming. For 99% of woodworkers out there, an organic filter and a particulate filter will be all you'll need.
You can also use 70 percent isopropyl alcohol to clean/disenfect the mask. We do this for pilots masks in the air force. Just soak a paper towel or use a disposable towellette style and wipe out the faceform.
i bought a 3m 7800 respirator on ebay, the dude guy cleaned it with fabuloso, which give me a migraine with in seconds (check the amazon reviews). can you think of any cleaner i can use? i've tried simple green bath for a few days, a bleach bath for a few days and leaving it out in the sun for a week. it still smells about the same. its basically cursed. i was thinking of trying xylene next, bad idea?
What BRANDS are recommended by the manufacturer that can be use for the 3M? Dishwasher? I need my crew to properly clean their respirator and not sure what brands to use. I Googled and it says a " neutral soap " .
Marc do you have a preference on the 3M masks? The Quick Release feature of the 6500 looks to be a nice feature but I hear the 7500 is supposed to be so very comfortable etc.... so I wonder if you have to sacrifice some comfort / seal-ability / features of the 7500 if one opts to go with the 6500?
The biggest problems I have with my respirator is 1) It holds my safety glasses away from the bottom of my face so I still get small dust specks in my eyes and 2) When the humidity is high drooling out the bottom vent. (I have the one with the pink cartridges.)
Good info. My company has been at work on a powered respirator. Our aim is a PAPR that's more accessible to the hobbyist/maker crowd. When we have certification, would you be willing to give it a try to compare? Its called MicroClimate Air3.
@@woodwhisperer Thanks for that clarification. I was also told that diluted bleach should be used, but I definitely don't want to ruin the materials used in the mask. I made the mistake of using really hot water once and it seemed to immediately degrade the rubber.
Very good informative insightful video. Does anyone know what type of Chemical to make a cleaning wipe With soaking Baby Wipes like Hydrogen Peroxide, White Vinegar etc. I've herd that using Rubbing Alcohol will wear down the Silacone masks and should be avoided.
According to 3M's cleaning advice, remove filters/cardridges, clean the mask with water not exceeding 49°C or 120°F, optionally with some mild detergent (not containing lanolin or any other oils), most dishwashing soap contain some oils (like parfums and stuff to make it easier to the hands), so be wary of that, after properly cleaning the mask and making sure All dirt and detergent are rinsed away (otherwise disinfection may not work), disinfect using a solution of quaternary ammonium disinfectant or sodium hypochlorite (Is very common in bleach at around 6%) for at least 1 or 2 minutes by spraying or bathing, afterward rinse througly with warm water, again not exceeding 50°C or 120°F, then leave it to dry in a Clean area. To get a good disinfection solution, 3M recommends concentrations of 5000PPM, which can be gotten by taking bleach containing 6% sodium hypoclorite and water at a 1:10 ratio, or otherwise 250ml bleach and 2350ml water bath solution, or 30ml bleach and 270ml water, to spray on the mask. Note though, 5000PPM concentration is very dangerous, as it can cause serious respiratory health problems, even more in a not well ventilated room, so be very very very careful, i recommend wearing a gasmask with chlorine filter (P3 or N99 are particulate filters and will do no good). Also note that you must never mix bleach with other chemicals, otherwise toxic gasses might be created. Also bleach is corrosive to your skin and eyes, face, lungs and your everything so wear protection. Also note some budget bleach may have a lower concentration of sodium hypochlorite or none at all. One wipe of 70% isopropyl won't do a lot of harm, but many wipes over time might. If you must, make sure the surface is clean, because dirt will weaken alcohol effectiveness, and have a contact time of at least 1 minute, that is if you are using it to actually kill viruses instead of just a quick wipe, just to feel happy. The outside plastic casing of cardridge filters can be cleaned with 70% isopropyl, just make sure it does not get on the filter inside, or you'l ruin it. About the vinegar, yes that stuff won't help you much, however it's excellent for cleaning the dishes or surfaces (combined with hot water and soap), though vinegar can ruin specific materials and surfaces (so read up), vinegar is a disinfectant and can kill Some germs and viruses, however it is not a virucide and Will Not work for killing SARS-CoV-2. For a list of disinfectants recommended by EPA, refer here: www.epa.gov/pesticide-registration/list-n-disinfectants-use-against-sars-cov-2 Remember to follow disinfection instructions, otherwise disinfection might not be effective and you out yourself at risk from false sense of safety. Btw, 3M has a training video detailing how to use 7500 masks: th-cam.com/video/mlWyMPFwEI8/w-d-xo.html When storing the clean mask, you may use the clean zip lock that came with the mask, but otherwise i recommend a clean paper bag, as plastic traps air and water and may create a environment that helps bacterial growth compared to breathable paper, but try not reuse the paper bags. ...i was bored, hope i helped you :).
What do you think of a powered full face respirator? I have seen many different styles. Ones that are almost a full helmet to ones with owered unit that only cover nose and mouth.
Do you know if they are more comfortable than something like what you have? I find after extended use the ones I have used will cause nose soreness. I have used 3m style in the 2 you have and currently own an RZ mask and all 3 kinds caused nose soreness.
I was just thinking back to your comment about using the small Rubbermaid containers to test dry a couple ounces of the oil finishes for your COWWG presentation.
are these type of masks any better at sealing around your nose than cheaper paper/fabric masks ? i tried pretty much all of them and they all allow my breath to get out past my nose and fog up my glasses, it's like nobody ever thinks of people with glasses when making these. I presume these rubber ones would be better but they are really rare and really expensive.
I'm sure you know now. But the 3m 7500 respirator has a downward exhaust. Exhaling won't fog your glasses. Wood whisperer mentioned it in a video like 10 years ago. But I seen it like two days ago.
Just bought the respirator! Thanks for encouringing us to that. I love. But its chinese and the exhale valve sometimes leaks a bit of air. Anyways i aint a plutonium miner sooo...
Its designed to seal at the bridge of your nose to allow for glasses or goggles if it dosen't fit properly with glasses you may want to switch to a smaller size mask and for proper fit testing you should consult your doctor if your using it for fine finishing or painting not so much for particles.
Repeat many of the comments below. Wash regularly but you can also buy the individual foil wrapped cleaners for the daily pre use clean (like you get from the take away {KFC}). And again comments below, we use dedicated tooth brushes.
@Buttered Lumps blue dawn (original) is always the best for cleaning ppe.
Can you tell me how to determine the correct size respirator to use
what if the mask is used for stone engraving? can i just clean it with wather and use soap once in a while or do i have to use soap everytime?
Great video as ever, Mark! I've had the 3M 7500 mask for 8 months now, and embarrassingly didn't even realise you could disassemble it like this to clean! Am now doing so! Thanks!

Thank you for this.
I'm just getting started in woodworking and watching beaucoup ("bo-COO"--French for "lots of") videos, and I'll be watching many more of yours.
Nicely done!
One thing you should mention is storage when not in use. It is as important as cleaning. Storage in a large sealed zip lock baggie works great.
+KL7EN mentioned it in my article on my site.
KL7EN , and separate the filters from the mask.
I store mine in a coffee can.
Thats how I store mine as well after giving it a few hours for the moisture to evaporate.
Thanks man. I'm using 7500 for years now and wash it when it gets dirty but I never figured out it can be completely disassembled so easily - live and learn I guess :)
The one issue that you did not mention is that facial hair can cause not getting a proper seal.
It's also good to storage the activated charcoal mask/filters in a sealed bag when not in use. That way the activated charcoal will last much longer.
Very helpful video. It's a simple process, but seeing someone else do it takes away any mystery or confusion.
Great info Marc. Respirators are so important for woodworkers to protect our lung health. Thanks.
I realized how long it had been since I actually used a finnish on my projects when a reached for my mask and a large spider had made it her home... i just bought a new one and let her have it
Thanks Matc for presenting this information. I usually wipe mine out because of the condensation inside but didn't think to clean it that thoroughly.
You have some of the best videos on workshop safety. Great series

I work in a rail grinding service and I clean my 6502QL once a week, but recently I have to buy a new one cause I use bleach to clean it and the mask seems not so well after I use it .
I immediately went out to the workshop and cleaned my mask after watching this. Thanks for the reminder.
Yeah I still use paper disposables, just haven't had the money to buy better ones yet, but they beat nothing at all I guess -_-
good job. short and to the point. much better than the manual!
Im a painter by trade so the info on cleaning is not new to me but I'm a new wood worker I just put in a small wood shop and need to remember to use the masks for my wood projects as well thanks for the reminder.

Very similar to the older military protective mask "mechanics", including the go-no-go seal test using your palm. Great video!!
Great video, I didn't know I could strip my 7500 down so far.

Very good informative insightful video.
Does anyone know what type of
Chemical to make a cleaning wipe
With soaking Baby Wipes like Hydrogen Peroxide, White Vinegar etc. I've herd that using Rubbing Alcohol will wear down the Silacone masks and should be avoided.
Fyi vinegar doesnt kill viruses. It does not destroy the envelope of the virus.

Becareful of using alcohol (for example isopropyl at 70%) as it degrade the mask until it won't properly seal, after which the mask becomes too risky to use.
For a list of disinfectants recommended by EPA, refer here:
www.epa.gov/pesticide-registration/list-n-disinfectants-use-against-sars-cov-2
Remember to follow disinfection instructions, otherwise disinfection might not be effective and you out yourself at risk from false sense of safety.
Btw, 3M has a training video detailing how to use 7500 masks:
th-cam.com/video/mlWyMPFwEI8/w-d-xo.html
When storing the clean mask, you may use the clean zip lock that came with the mask, but otherwise i recommend a clean paper bag, as plastic traps air and water and may create a environment that helps bacterial growth compared to breathable paper, but try not reuse the paper bags.
...i was bored, hope i helped you :).
What do you think of a powered full face respirator? I have seen many different styles. Ones that are almost a full helmet to ones with owered unit that only cover nose and mouth.
+JronmanBuilds probably the best solution out there if u don’t mind wearing it.
Do you know if they are more comfortable than something like what you have? I find after extended use the ones I have used will cause nose soreness. I have used 3m style in the 2 you have and currently own an RZ mask and all 3 kinds caused nose soreness.
+JronmanBuilds never used one. But if there’s nothing on the bridge of tour nose I’d have to imagine it’s a lot more comfortable.
Yeah I have the 7500 series and a 6000 series full face mask. Too bad during the pandemic I can't also get one of the powered ones.
I just decon every use, is that fine?
Does Nicole know you took her red bowl and bottle brush?
Mike Swankhouse ...Nicole knew in advance so she switced the bottle brush for the toilet brush.
+Mike Swankhouse i think it’s cute that you guys assume I din’t wash nearly every dirty bottle that was made in this house lol
I was just thinking back to your comment about using the small Rubbermaid containers to test dry a couple ounces of the oil finishes for your COWWG presentation.
Good video! Sadly, I've never thought about cleaning mine
Thanks for the advice Marc, I have been replacing the whole respirator before. What was the spray you used after taking the things out of the water?
+Willmore's World Of Wood just water
The Wood Whisperer ok, thought it may have been, thanks
It also helps if you shave first, you'll get a better seal.
How often do you need to do this?
are these type of masks any better at sealing around your nose than cheaper paper/fabric masks ? i tried pretty much all of them and they all allow my breath to get out past my nose and fog up my glasses, it's like nobody ever thinks of people with glasses when making these.
I presume these rubber ones would be better but they are really rare and really expensive.
+Joe G.P. Yes they are much better at sealing
I'm sure you know now. But the 3m 7500 respirator has a downward exhaust. Exhaling won't fog your glasses. Wood whisperer mentioned it in a video like 10 years ago. But I seen it like two days ago.
Are the Inhalation Valves not washable?
Can I use cold water
"Bottle Brush" Nahhh bud, That Was a Toilet Brush. But Solid Info, years later. Perfect timing for my recent purchase.
How to clean the filters?
Very important info.
very important info. thanks
Thinks "Good idea!"
Wonders "When was the last time I cleaned my resp... oh dear god..."
Just bought the respirator! Thanks for encouringing us to that. I love. But its chinese and the exhale valve sometimes leaks a bit of air. Anyways i aint a plutonium miner sooo...
What will your next video about
Do I nees to wash a new mask?
How do you wear one of those things with glasses?
Its designed to seal at the bridge of your nose to allow for glasses or goggles if it dosen't fit properly with glasses you may want to switch to a smaller size mask and for proper fit testing you should consult your doctor if your using it for fine finishing or painting not so much for particles.
Great tutorial. Thank you :-)
They say you can clean cartriges few times
Repeat many of the comments below. Wash regularly but you can also buy the individual foil wrapped cleaners for the daily pre use clean (like you get from the take away {KFC}). And again comments below, we use dedicated tooth brushes.
I know I should wear one but I always have issues with my eye protection fogging. Plus it’s harder to hold my cigar in my mouth when I’m working. Lol
Friend with the cigar I can not help you but the glasses I use that works very well with the mask 7500 is the 3M Fahrenheit, sorry the translator
