    This was such a good song to listen to and the drum battle is probably one of the cooler things I've ever seen in how it threads together 2 drum kits into 1 solo. NICE TOUCH!!

    Thanks Vand3r reviewing this.
    As a non-drummer, both ladies have great skill of drumming, but I feel something on Yoyoka’s sound even she doesn’t play her own drumset.
    I feel Yoyoka has some own groove that many of drum legends have. Bohnam, Pocaro, Gadd, Roy Haynes, etc.
    I feel there are much more skilled drummer there, but it is not so often to find drummer who has own groove.
    I could be wrong, but I feel so.
    Highly skilled drumming itself makes me excited, but some of drumming which has own groove makes me more than excited, very emotional.

    This is one of the best drum demos esp. by two skillful drummers. Yoyoka’s cross over was done so effortlessly that people who aren’t knowledgeable might think it’s so easy. But we all know it’s not. I discovered Tamu through this vid and you can tell she’s the more ‘experienced’ one but I think Yoyoka was just showing deference to her and some restraint on her playing. But you can tell though that the kid has the groove and the older she gets the more she’ll develop a more complex solos.
    Thanks for the reaction Van. I noticed that you are also showing some restraint. I can tell you want to pause on some segments on the first pass of the vid. 😝 I say, just do it. It’s a reaction vid and it should be spontaneous. That’s why I liked your very first reaction of Yoyoka. 👍🥁🤘🏼

    • @ThePallidor
      @ThePallidor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree pausing is fine/expected. If we want to watch without pauses we can go to Yoyoka's channel.
      On longer and more complex solos, check out her Improv Collections:

      @@ThePallidor oh I’ve seen that vid and I love every bit of it esp. when she jams with her dad. I know how brilliant her improvisational skills are that’s why I was disappointed on how Pearl handled her segment at NAMM. She could’ve been doing these type of improv using the regular drums and not the e-drums. Well anyway that’s another story.

      But Yoyoka still isn't in the same ballpark as Senri Kawaguchi when it comes to Jazz. She's not even close... yet.
      But Yoyoka is very young. Time will tell if she can get to that level. Murata is closer to Senri's level, but still not quite there, despite being 6 years older.
      Senri is the benchmark for Japanese female drummers, which is why she has shared the stage with the all time great drummers like Gadd and Weckl and all the best Jazz players overall.
      Senri has been creating her own drum parts since on original music she was 12, and making albums at 14. Yoyoka is still at the copying stage. But she's still phenomenal, for sure.

    Mr. Vanderhorst: May I ask why you're addressing Tamu Murata by her Family name? In polite form, it would be Murata San. It's kind of like calling Ginger Baker, "Baker". Tamu's given name is Ai. Tamu is her nickname. Tamu is the feminine form of Tam which means Tom. She plays toms. She also goes by, Muratatam which means "fold up" another nickname. Yoyoka is really getting her chops down; and she can be what ever drummer she chooses to be. I don't know if there is any one kind of drummer. I've always considered myself as a rock drummer. My first recording, was in 1968, where I was a percussionist in a classical orchestra taped live. My first studio session was with the Montclair Jazz Experiment in 1971. You just kind of play what's handed to you. I think Yoyoka is going to be able to play anything! Hang in there and keep drumming! Russ

    • @vand3rhorst
      @vand3rhorst  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      haha well I don't speak Japanese, the name I found for her on this video was the Murata Tama, I do apologize if this was incorrect xD In the american military we address each other by last names, so it's very common to get that mixed up! I guess that would be like calling me Leftwich instead of my first name Nick haha WHoops! Thank you for pointing that out though! I totally did not mean to get that wrong. and yes I 100% believe Yoyoka will go on to write her own music doing ANYTHING she wants.

    • @Russ.Murphy
      @Russ.Murphy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vand3rhorst Hi, Nick! It's great to be on a first name basis with you! I did a little time in the army. (21 years, combined active and reserve) It would irk me when Specialists would say, "Hey, Murphy!" The officers would address me as "Sergeant Murphy", unless they were asking me to do something special, then it was, "Oh, Russ". There are things I like about Nemophila that's more than the music. Tamu Murata, Saki, and Hazuki all sponsor and support younger, up and coming performers. What you might not know, Yoyoka and Tamu have been corresponding with each other for several years; mostly tweets. This is a great duet! You can really see the growth in Yoyoka! Yoyoka also keeps in touch with Dave Grohl, among others. Hang in there and check out that old video of Tamu! Best Wishes! Russ

      @ThePallidor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@vand3rhorst The Japanese name order issue is always confusing. The reasons why are below if interested:
      In Japan the family name is said first, but then for celebrities or people interacting with the Anglosphere it's often reversed for effect or out of a recognition that people from other countries will tend to say it in the opposite order. So it becomes a game of second-guessing each other.
      This happens also with pronunciation. For instance, Ami is pronounced Ah-mi but Americans will say it Amy since it looks closest to that, so the person will sometimes give up and say to call them Amy, but then some will look up how to say the Japanese name Ami and call them Ah-mi, so endless confusion.
      So, in Japan Yoyoka is often just called Yoyoka as a celebrity but Soma Yoyoka when her full name is used. In English we would say Yoyoka Soma. Murata Ai became Murata Tamu, so the natural way to call her in English would be Tamu Murata, and then you might want to call her by her "first name" Tamu since that's what we do for Yoyoka, but whether this is "correct" or not depends on whether Tamu Murata uses Tamu as a "celebrity name" (a "geimei" in Japanese). Maybe she uses Muratatam(u) as a celebrity name instead. No way to know unless you listen to how she introduces herself in English, if you can find that, or listen to how she's reported in news, etc. But if in doubt the safe way is to call her "Tamu Murata," just as you could always call Yoyoka by her full name "Yoyoka Soma."
      Not that a Japanese person is ever going to fault you for saying it "wrong" (though fans may).
