    This almond milk is a staple in our house. Sweet, natural and incredibly tasty. Although it never lasts very long, it should keep for at least 5 days in the fridge. Let me know what you think of these short how-to videos. If you guys like them, I can definitely do more.

    Nice video as always! If you want to make it a lot cheaper: swap the cup of nuts for 1/2 cup of ROLLED OATS and 1/2cup nuts of your choice. The best tasting milk I made so far is:
    -1/2 cup raw cashews
    -1/2 cup organic rolled oats
    -2 pitted medjool dates
    -1tsp vanilla extract
    -Pinch of salt
    -4 to 4 1/2 cups of water
    It makes 1L of deliciousness.
    Cheers!

      Vegan Kestrel Glad to hear that I'm not alone ;) Soaking the almonds/cashews make them easier to blend. Personnally, I don't soak my cashews/oats because it saves me time and my Vitamix is powerful enough to blend them anyway.

    the almond milk from the market has only around 6-7 almonds per bottle which means its color is clear water. The reason those market milks are white is because companies add a special kind of white coloring.

    I've been making it for about fifteen years every three or four days. A couple of tips. One, you don't need to add the dates unless you want it sweet (I like mine plain), two, if you're not a muscle man like Derek :), then pour it into the nut milk bag in batches, and three, if you do like it sweet and want the dates, you may want to add vanilla too. Great video!

  • @nirmal840

    This is a stupid way. Almonds need to be soaked for 24 hrs to allow the phytic acid to leave in the form of a white foam. Next, wash the almonds, add clean water and boil. When it is boiling, you will notice a lot of foam and it has to be removed. Next, use a metal sieve to scoop out the almonds and remove the skin which contains the poison cyanide. Only then you should blend the almonds with water in a mixer to get almond milk.

    almonds are extremely detrimental to the environment. besides the extreme water requirements, the pesticides used have obliterated the surrounding nature of almond farms so much so that bees have to be imported to pollinate the almond trees; these bees end up dying because of the pesticide residues and new bees need to be brought in yearly.

You don't even need a nut bag, for some reason the cashews just blend perfectly into milk and that's it. Call us lazy, but we've abandoned almond milk for it's easier cousin cashew milk. lol Is there any particular reason that we're not thinking of that cashew milk would be inferior to almond milk? • @Nicole-px3ll
      @Nicole-px3ll 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Some store-bought ARE fortified, but also have a bunch of preservatives in them as well.
      You could always get nutrients from other sources, like a multivitamin.
      Comes down to preference. The homemade nutmilk is going to be way more fresh!

    • @Simnettnutrition
      @Simnettnutrition  7 ปีที่แล้ว +96

      Great point. I was considering speaking about this, and actually comparing the nutrients of both, but maybe I will incorporate it into a Q and A. The way I see it is that i'm not starving for nutrients on my diet as demonstrated in a few of my 'what I eat in a day with nutrient analysis' videos. The other question you should ask is, what forms are the vitamins they are adding? Is d2 really that helpful? What type of calcium are they adding to it? Synthetic b vitamins? And also what affect do the thickeners and preservatives have on our guts? I don't think its a reason to totally shy away from all store bought non-dairy milks, but I also don't think most of us need to seek it out for the nutrient content if we are eating well.

    Hey Simnett!
    So i got a question (it's not directly related to this video)
    I see that you eat a lot of flaxseed,
    So what are your thoughts on flaxseeds increasing Estrogen levels because of the high value of lignans?

    • @regax847
      @regax847 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Here are some articles on this by registered dietitians (with references) that should shed some light on the topic. These are generally about soy phytoestrogens vs. estrogen, which is pretty much the same issue. Personally, I haven't read about the topic in a while as I feel that I know enough on it for now. If anything though, I'd expect the high fiber of flaxseed to help flush out excess true estrogen from my body (it's removed from your gut iirc).
      Virginia Messina, RD talks about the issue here: www.theveganrd.com/2011/08/soy-isoflavones-and-estrogen/
      Jack Norris, RD, here: www.veganhealth.org/articles/soy_wth
      And he links to this article from Marji McCullough, ScD, RD here which I'm pretty sure I read in the past: blogs.cancer.org/expertvoices/2012/08/02/the-bottom-line-on-soy-and-breast-cancer-risk/?_ga=1.177795873.541656139.1456368351

    I did this and made a chocolate version as well, both tasted amazing, so rich and creamy....BUT 24hrs later they were both spoiled, sour as hell. What happened? Anyone else experience this? I stored overnight in the frig

      hi this happened to me as well... you have to buy the freshest almonds you can... some sit in the supermarkets in the bins and can go rancid..... also... if you have a high speed blender do not over blend ... especially the vitamix will start to heat up the milk. usually around 50 sec to a minute no longer

    Amazing!! Do you recommend Blendtec or vitamix?

    Great vid Derek! Is it really necessary to soak the almonds overnight? Was planning tonight on making a wild rice lemon garlic soup that requires some almond milk...let me know bud asap ;-)
