Fender just issued a hand wired 64' Deluxe Reverb this year if your interested in the deluxe reverb, its $2400.... I'm not sure where the vintage market is at with these amps but you can probably find a 66' for around the same price.
k...best vid out for either of these pedals. I wish there was reasonably priced waiting list for a Klon. My KOT is nearing after 2 plus years. Great playing also and I love that strat.
These pedals compliment each other very nicely. I have a KOT and a RYRA Klone. If you use your Klon as a boost, which it is amazing for, it compliments almost everything you throw at it. A good tube screamer goes great with these pedals too. 3 great and different tones.
@@adam-yk6yd, It works really well. I haven’t personally been using the Ryra much with my Marshall 1962HW..I use the KOT, A good tube screamer, and an Analogman Sunlion with a red-dot fuzz. Between those pedals I get about every overdrive sound I could ever want.
I Don’t know what you did for sound in this video but it’s great. you can clearly hear the mid boost in the klon compared to the kot and a lot of the details in each. Great video for someone like me who hasn’t heard either. 😎👍
Basically, a clone is a transparent drive which focuses more on adding drive by maintaining the original sound of the guitar or amp. This is suitable for those who like the sound of the amp and makes it distort without changing the sound, in contrast to classic overdrive or tube simulation which provides characteristics because of its adding or changing sounds suitable for those who like to explore, correct if iam wrong thanks
That wouldn't quite do the trick. The KLON has a mid push that neither side of the KOT has. Currently I am using the KLON with the right side of the KOT for most solos. Also very useful is the Fulltone OCD - placed after the KLON it adds a bit of grit that works well. The KOT is definitely smoother.
@@DudleyTaft Thanks for the response. I do like a mid-forward tone. Waiting on the KOT. Wonder if I'll like it for its transparency, but like I said I read like being able to push the mids.

My thoughts on reverb for this demo: I understand people not wanting the reverb on, but for me I need to test these pedals with the sound that I use. Of course reverb echoes (in a very colored way) what signal you put into it. The way reverb responds to these pedals is important to me. Also, as many of you are aware, until you use your pedal either live or on a recording, it is hard to know how effective it is. Sometimes the pedals that sound bland cut through, and some pedals sound fantastic by themselves but seem to lose their coherence when playing live with a band or mixing the sound in with drums and bass and other instruments on a recording.
Nothing stopping you from showing us a demo of the pedal into a clean amp without other effects so we can tell what the pedal is doing. Otherwise there's no way to tell what is coming from the amp, the epseakers, other pedals, and the pedal being demoed.
Very nicely done! Great base tone with the Deluxe Reverb. It'd be fun to see this topic covered again, but comparing each pedal to the sound of the Deluxe cranked to 10. Can the pedals at low volume get close to the sound of the amp cranked? I've owned a KOT and an Archer and both have their place. I'd use the KOT if my sound already had a lots of mids, if I was doing mostly rhythm work, or if I was going for a more neutral sound like I was plugged straight in and cranked. I'd use the Klon if I was using a Strat, had less mids in my tone to start with, or needed a bit more push in the midrange to stand out for solos.
Jake- you hit the nail on the head. The KLON does boost the mids, which works nicely with single coil pickups into a Fender while the KOT really gives you more of what you have.
Great playing a tone. I love reverb too, so no complaints here! I really love how the Klon cuts in a band context. Both pedals sounds great. RC booster into Klon is my preference but I don’t have a KOT yet to compare. Thanks for the great video.
You hit the nail on the head - the KLON cuts through the drums and bass and even other melody instruments. It's hard to tell if a guitar/amp/pedal will deliver until you test it out live or at band practice!
Thanks for your response. Looks like a two year wait now, due to a rise in popularity . I have to respect the fact that they hand build each unit , and refuse to mass produce them .
I probably a really stupid question, but if the Klon has a mid boost & the King has flat, cant you just turn up the mids on the amplifier to achieve the same effect?
It's not the same thing. Also, a lot of amps (like my Fender Deluxe) do not have a midrange control. Once you live with a Klon for a little while, it becomes apparent why so many people like it. It does color you sound, but in a really good way.
Wow the KOT is gets a really focused type sound out the guitar, I can see why so many people love it. It almost sounds like it very subtly compresses the notes. Great video and great playing, maybe next time you can turn down the reverb just a little to more clearly hear the pedals.

@@GtrPknMama yes, and that's why it is one of the best - kind of gives you MORE of your signal without a lot of coloration. The Klon definitely colors the tone. Different animals, but some of the best animals in the jungle...
honest question buy why use a looper when you have the pedals right there? What's the point of using foot pedals then? Just use rack gear. I don't think it makes that much difference tone wise.
Tone-wise it makes no difference, but having the switches closest to the front helps in gig situations where it is dark. Also, you can chain two pedals together on one switch (say for octavia > fuzz). That being said, I don't use it on most of my tours...
Love the demo Dudley. Great tone, great gear. I have a similar set up with a Strat and Tele, old Blackface Deluxe Reverb, KOT and Warm Audio Centavo. Question, if you were to use both he KOT and Klon, one for rhythm and both for lead, which would you use for the lead boost? Or would you keep both on and use your volume knob for adding volume and gain? Or would you not stack these? Great playing man.
KOT has a nice way of just enhancing whatever it has thrown at it. The Klon sounds more like a tubescreamer with a bit more wool or distortion. I prefer the KOTs sound but it enhances the klon quite well too.
With all respect for the Klon, people should realize there are many ways to achieve control over their tone. A Klon could be a good investment, but in the search for great tone, it isn't the be-all-end-all holy grail of tone. It has certainly made its statement and directed people toward another mid push beyond the Tube Screamer circuit. You have to start with a good guitar with good pickups and good cable. A Sarno Black Box Tube Buffer or an Analogman Buffer into the King of Tone into a Maxon OD-820 works even more dynamically than with the Klon. We're not in 2004 - there are some great buffers now for us all. And if you want mid push, go for the Ibanez TS808HW or a Suhr Koko Reloaded. Open your sound with a good clean platform by the OD-820 or a Xotic SH RC Booster. Nothing can replace the King of Tone, though.. that thing is an animal.
IMO buffers are often overpriced for being such a simple circuits. You could build one yourself for cheap if you can solder. There are schematics and kits out there. The Pete Cornish buffer seems to be very acclaimed but any of them will do just fine. Also, every Boss pedal in your chain acts as a buffer.
@@enkiea8322 if you use single coils, the Boss CS2 has a fantastic buffer with the added bonus of being the best tone sweetening comp ever made. Even without using any "compression".
Klon seems opener sound, but cut the bass. More spacial. KOT more focussed. Both greats. Perhaps you could go up with the tone of KOT, or go a bit down with the Centaur's treble.
KOt sounds better as a distortion pedal (when its breaking up). But the Klon does do very well as a clean boost, ie making your amp do its things but just louder. So the Klon in my view is a very good clean boost style pedal but as far as overdrive/distortion tones the KOT and many others sound much better. When i did some AB testing a SHO style circuit almost does what the klon does, but to be fair the klon is a bit better, not much though.
Well, FWIW I use the Klon as a boost, but not a totally clean boost. I like that it makes the amp break up a bit more and I also LOVE the extra midrange. This is particularly noticeable when playing wit a band, because those mid frequencies cut through the highs and lows of bass and drums. I use another overdrive after it in the chain for solos (usually the Fulltone OCD).
@@DudleyTaft sounds great man! I've got a Bondi effects sick as (klon style) and I'm either going with the tubescreamer or wampler pantheon (blues breaker/kot style) your video has helped alot!
It's the glassy tone that you're getting from your amp(your original sound.) Without that glassy tone the pedals wouldn't sound that good just on their own. Right when you played your clean signal.. and I heard that glassy tone , I knew everything else that followed was going to be sweet.
You bring up a very good point Joseph. No one ever mentions that pedals sound WAY DIFFERENT in front of different kinds of amps. Old Fenders are great pedal platforms because they tend to have a lot of headroom, and spongy response. Some modern amps are stiffer (think solid state rectifier) and react accordingly changing the character of the pedal. It's very difficult to know how a pedal will sound with your own rig until you try it.
@@DudleyTaft thanks, I wonder If my pickups will do the trick (ken Rose Vintage Belle) they are a bit vintage/hot. yours sound great, but of course that comes down to you mostly :)
It has an unbranded speaker in there - and I have not changed it since I bought it a bout 3 years ago. I got lucky I guess! It also sounds great through other cabinets, so it must have some mojo...
I took the original Oxford out of mine to keep from damaging it (I had to have an original Jensen Blue Bell re-coned before in another amp and didn't want to have to go through that again). I replaced it with a reissue Jensen Blue Bell, but it turned out to be way too bright. Later replaced that one with a Weber which toned down the highs and improved the sound of the amp quite a bit. But it still doesn't sound as good as yours. Thanks for your reply!
Really cool comparison, I have a Klon and waiting to get my KOT!! A question for you Dudley, what do you think about the Jan Ray ? I have one, but with the time, I wonder if it is not too compressed and less organic than those great OD pedals that you demonstrated.. ?
Manu, the Jan Ray is a whole different beast. It has more saturation and compression, which can be a really good thing depending on your circumstances. It's kind of like a Timmy with more thickness.
While they sound similar, IMO the Klon(e) circuit feels more bouncy and responsive on my Vibrolux clone than the KoT. The KoT feels more pedal-y, and less responsive.
In my opinion KOT tone is a great pedal if you like your sound already. It doesn't really alter your tone as much. The Klon even alters your sound slightly pushing the mids. Not unlike a Tubescreamer which also boosts mids.more.
Whilst a used Klon Centaur is heading towards 5K on e.bay and a used KOT is selling for a little more than a 1/10th of that, the Centaur is just a better pedal. Well, at its price it ought to be, but in my and in many’s opinion Centaur is the best OD pedal ever made. Relatively few Centaurs were individually handmade whilst KOT is a more numerous and ubiquitous pedal, which may partly account for the price difference I was fortunate to be clued in on Centaur when new ones could be had for a few hundred U.S. dollars and I bought two, a silver (no horsie) and later a gold (with horsie). I reluctantly sold the silver a few years ago for much less than it’s currently going for, but as long as I can still play I will never sell the gold horsie. Just the best OD pedal I ever heard or played and I have had/played a great many over the years (I love my Marshall "Gov'nor" as well, but it's in a different league). So, is Centaur ten-times better than KOT? Of course not, KOT is an excellent OD pedal (perhaps second only to Centaur), but Centaur really is better than KOT and anything else you want to put up against it for that classic, creamy OD sound from a clean amp. Yeah, that ‘66 Deluxe is certainly the cat’s whiskers. My two pence anyroad.
Glicksman1: I have been playing guitar for 38 years and I have not found a better overdrive than the Klon Centaur. So, we agree on this. Yes, the price difference is HUGE, but the fact remains. I scored mine on reverb.com for $1,300 which was the best price I could find. But I use it ALL THE TIME. It is a key part of my 'signature' tone if you will. Cheers!
Original! I thought it was pricey at the time, but $1,300 would be a good deal these days (but much more than that, I probably wouldn't have bought it).
Nice video Dudley - But, I heard differently. I have the KOT and do not like it into my blackface DR. It has a very distinct mid push. In your video, I heard far more mid-push with the KOT. When I engage both side, it sounds like AM radio to me. Very unpleasant. I've come to believe, unless you like mid-pushed pedals, the KOT is not a good match for the DR.

What speaker do you have in that Deluxe Reverb? That clean tone is killer! I have a '65 Deluxe Reverb, but it doesn't sound that good.
Sure thing Greg! I have heard great things about Webers...
Nicely demo’d ☺️☺️
Really cool comparison, I have a Klon and waiting to get my KOT!! A question for you Dudley, what do you think about the Jan Ray ? I have one, but with the time, I wonder if it is not too compressed and less organic than those great OD pedals that you demonstrated.. ?
Manu, the Jan Ray is a whole different beast. It has more saturation and compression, which can be a really good thing depending on your circumstances. It's kind of like a Timmy with more thickness.
For me, the KOT is superior in every way to the Klone. Such an amazing pedal!
While they sound similar, IMO the Klon(e) circuit feels more bouncy and responsive on my Vibrolux clone than the KoT. The KoT feels more pedal-y, and less responsive.
I need to buy that guitar
How do you like that Korg tuner??
I love it - easy to use, and it's steady readout is nice
In my opinion KOT tone is a great pedal if you like your sound already. It doesn't really alter your tone as much. The Klon even alters your sound slightly pushing the mids. Not unlike a Tubescreamer which also boosts mids.more.
Your king of tone Sir, normal gain or higjer gain on both side?
Right side normal gain, left side high gain .
@@DudleyTaft Yellow side is High Gain the normal or the red side
@@DudleyTaft Thank you Sir
@@DudleyTaft Sir why did you choose this version instead of the left side Normal gain/ Right side high gain?
@@jmorrero I bought this used, as I did not want to wait 3 years, so I took what was available
I had both of these pedals. Sold both of them.
Relatively few Centaurs were individually handmade whilst KOT is a more numerous and ubiquitous pedal,
which may partly account for the price difference
I was fortunate to be clued in on Centaur when new ones could be had for a few hundred U.S. dollars and I bought two, a silver (no horsie) and later a gold (with horsie).
Cheers!
That Strat sounds... super extra stratty! lol.
KOT Wins ! More sustain and Clarity !
What pedal switcher are you using?
Loop Master!
Original Kline or a clone? I hate spell check.
Original! I thought it was pricey at the time, but $1,300 would be a good deal these days (but much more than that, I probably wouldn't have bought it).
Great tone!
Cool vid, thanks.
The Klon has more depth...more bottom too.
Hey Dudley, what speaker do you have in your deluxe reverb? It sounds amazing!
It is a period-correct Jensen. Not the original. When I record, I run this amp through two 12" greenback celestions...
Also, what kind of strat is that. And when you say period correct Jensen can you elaborate?
@@chuckfrost1966 The Jensen is made to the original's specs - back in 1966. The Strat is a Custom Shop I got back in 1992.
