- Acting as an explosives subcontractor, Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) successfully felled a 138’ tall, 90’ diameter, structural steel water tower. A risk analysis performed under the strict safety protocols at the site indicated that the piecemeal dismantling of the water tower was a far less attractive means of removing the structure than felling same remotely via explosives. The number of legs under the tower and their distribution as to the weight about the ring beam made it difficult to mathematically justify design of a mechanical tripping plan as required by OSHA engineering standards for the demolition of structures.
The water tower presented project-specific challenges for CDI given the radius to which shaped charges had to be bent to match the twelve (12), 30” diameter legs of the tower. Shaped charges were used in combination with a kick charge to displace one (1) leg in a test shot to pre-remove one (1) leg to confirm CDI’s plan.
CDI’s work was coordinated through the main contractor to meet the fast-track Philadelphia Shipyard site redevelopment for Kaeverner Engineering.

My favorite "spider tripping over a wire" clip! 😂
AT-AT falling when the wire wrapped around it’s legs!
Glad you enjoyed the video!
War of the Worlds action here! CDI never disappoints! Keep the videos coming! 👍👍
YES! I’ve never seen one of those big fat water tower come down with like 15 legs. Quite a sight to see
Juy
Would love to see one of your demolitions in person. Your’s are the best in the business.
I was working in the refinery next door to the Philly Navy Yard that morning. I just happened to be looking that way when the explosives were triggered. I was impressive.
NEVER gets old… you guys hiring? I have a broom..
The 'Bogdalite Space' craft from Men in Black crashed......
I've never seen one of those old torosphere water towers toppled over before.
Another great shot
I enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
Thanks for watching!
down and down they go , loving it C.D.I. .
Thanks for watching!
Bravo! Always fun to watch. Wish a tank would crumple and flatten more but that would probably mean it was so corroded and dangerous.
Bending of the linear shaped charges would have been interesting.
Love watching water towers come down even though they’re boring because they don’t fall far or implode on impact Lol
Thanks CDI.
NAVY WATER TOWER
