First time I ever heard of this guy was last year’s Namm show when he was trying out Tosin Abasi‘s guitar. I am a metal player and I am simply blown away by the stuff this guy can do. I think he’s an alien.
Greg Koch is definitely in a class all by himself. But if you start exploring country electric guitar, you'll find lots of guys who play in this vein -- to name just a few, Brent Mason, Johnny Hiland, well-known stars like Brad Paisley and Vince Gill, all the way back to the Hellecasters, Danny Gatton, Albert Lee, and Clarence White. Once you get into playing in this style, it becomes addictive!
fenderjag114 You’re absolutely right. Koch can do so much more though, and the only time I get a bit aggravated with any of his music is when he uses this technique too much. He can play in so many styles, while also being able to adapt songs into his Bluesy Chicken Pickin’ Jazzy Fusion...🤪
The fact that Tosin was blown away says a lot. Greg's part of that series of great players trying out Abasi's guitars was by far the best and most impressive.
ONE OF A KIND! GREG IS ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES AND I ACTUALLY WAS ABLE TO PICK HIS BRAIN TRAVELING WITH HIM IN THE ROAD BACK IN THE DAY. why am I yelling. he's a great guy
"I'll practice these licks for a few weeks until I get them down" said no guitar player ever in the history of guitar. I love this guy and his jaw-dropping playing!
Yes 👍. Mainly his sense of humor and goofiness that you hear in his purposely ridiculous vibrato or crazy fast chicken picked runs. Or that cool sort of steel guitar/ honking car horn thing he does. I find myself chuckling sometimes watching him.....also crying tho😂
I met and spoke to Greg Koch at a guitar clinic here in Auckland NZ a few yrs ago, Nice guy to talk to, he showed me a few country licks & I still can't do them
As far as I see, he’s doing one false harmonic at a time. The “higher” string is played without a harmonic. Tommy Emmanuel (and I think Chet Atkins) is/was pretty avid user of this nice technique! If you look up “harp” harmonics, you’ll find it!
Not into modern country so I hadn't heard of Greg but he's amazing. Love the quartal harmony and harmonic stuff - didn't think country players were into that, but I suspect he's quite a jazzer when he wants to be.
Was Greg Koch in a band about 10 years ago, that had one member jumping around on his large Acoustic Double Bass as part of the gig? They used to do gigs in St Catharines Ontario back then, and I have been trying to track them down to see if they have any videos out from back then.
Great to watch [!] and Listen to, BUT, I'm pretty sure I won't get these 'down' at anytime! Ive got too many thumbs, you know. Greg Koch has been on my 'radar' for a long time and I'm ALWAYS blown away by his 'S[kills]'!!! He's the "pickster" fox of Geetar pickin', imho!
A wonderful touch on guitar for sure. Inspiring to listen to. I would agree though, Greg, if it is for instruction then perhaps at least play the licks half speed before playing full on - it would be very helpful. Thanks though - wonderfully done.
Funny as an ad of an arpeggio shred guy from 'Brent Barker Music' appeared before Greg's video. You can definitely see how Greg's licks are leagues tastier than the guy in the ad. hahaha
All my guitars are now for sale on Reverb.
I know makes one want to sell their gear.
lol
😂😂😂 Don't you give up because you will get there in 3024 😂😂😂
Greg Koch is one of my all time favorite guitar players.
X 2
I played everyone of these licks last night...then I woke up
And your hand was all STICKY! ;oP
lol
@@stratonut ;oP
if you can not play this crap give the game away

One of the most creative guitarists out there. Plus the best tele tone I've ever heard!
I’ve never seen anyone’s personality come out in their playing as much as Greg. He is a beast!!!

Maybe there should also be another video called “Greg Koch shares his favorite licks that mere mortals can also do”.
Maybe? There definitely should :P
Sick. My fav was the part where it was slowed down and explained.
😆
You can slow it down in TH-cam all by yourself!
Yeah duh - was going for the comedy angle - thanks for playing.
You need to buy the magazine to get the tabs
Nick Granville - I’m embarrassed to admit my ignorance, but how do you do that?
1:35 hahaha that sounds so ripping. Dissonant, yes, but the speed and timing make it sound great.
I continue to stay baffled at why anyone would dislike a video like this! Greg's a monster player. Don't care what your style of music is.
It's called envy. Haters gotta hate
1:11 ok, that was clever. Not only using false harmonics, but doing TWO at once and in a kind of dissonant construction. great.
I was hearing Mr. Sandman .
As far as I see, he’s doing one false harmonic at a time. The “higher” string is played without a harmonic. Tommy Emmanuel (and I think Chet Atkins) is/was pretty avid user of this nice technique! If you look up “harp” harmonics, you’ll find it!
Country licks always seem like the hardest stuff to pull off. Nice playing!
being a tiny little 5'5" guy , the things giant size guys with huge hands can do with a guitar just blows me away:) Greg is unbelievable.
No need to worry about that man, Angus Young is 5'2
Example #5 is a technique Steve Morse used in... Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming ... With Deep Purple....
What a great guy and a great player - could have watched, listened and learned all night. Best vid by Guitarist for ages...
Greg? Can I be you
He's one of those players I never get tired of hearing.
That is SICK!!! The chops are unbelievable!!!
spectacular guitarist!!!!!
Love watching you play! So outside the box and smart. .. nice job Greg!
Always up for some Koch licks!
This is unbelievable! Thanks for lowering my self-esteem.
This may take a while
He is great at twisting yer ear when listening to him play. Thanks for this! Way kewl stuff!
Esse cara é um monstro!

Labels like country are kinda reductive, and don’t begin to capture…

Has to be the best allround guitarist on the planet.
1:11
DAMN. Greg’s got some of the most unique licks arounds.
This guy doesn't get enough accolades. He is as good as anyone out there and better than most!
His use of volume on that very last E chord makes me smile ear to ear
I had the same reaction.😃
excellent guitar playing. beautiful tones too.
i love the six gun lt from reverd. loved to have the cash for it... :).
As always, the licks are amazing and somehow hilarious at times. You the man Greg!
unique guitarist...you are very great
Gristle Master! We bow to you, Sir!
Awesome as usual. I love that khaki jacket.
Do you ever play acoustic much Greg? Awesome.
I'm new to the Greg Koch phenomena. This is going to be fun!
he is amazing...
GENIUS🎸♥️

Greg you have a style all of your own. Cheers James.
His skills are insane
That last one melted my face.
Fantastic player. A collection of almost impossible licks to try and learn. He makes it look easy.
Man o Man, this guy is just sick in a great way. So deeply impressive.
amazing...
They're all fabulous but EX7 really got me!
We are not worthy 🫡
Man, he is amazing.
Greg Koch and The Damned Fools live at the Greasy Gristle Grill 🎸😎😅👍
The MASTER!!!!
I love Greg's incredible lightning speed.
Greg’s such a monster player! 😉🎸
A wonderful touch on guitar for sure. Inspiring to listen to. I would agree though, Greg, if it is for instruction then perhaps at least play the licks half speed before playing full on - it would be very helpful. Thanks though - wonderfully done.
I’ve been watching Greg on the wildwood guitars site for a couple of years ,, trying to steal some licks from him .
Monster player!
Most excellent!
Wonderful 💪
Simply wonderful
Greg’s a beast!
GK is the man!
Is that a Stratocaster neck? Anybody know?
john see He is playing his new signature reverend guitar. They are made from Corina wood and manufactured in south Korea I believe.
@@ProbableCauseBluesBand thanks !
This guy is a legend ...
Result after 50000 hours of noodling! Love it!
Maybe having Greg play them a tad slower too guys? Also I find the tabbing on the magazine quite off here esp. example 7
Chicken pickin'😂 That kills me! Great hybrid picking and fret board work to boot!😮
Guitarist, or magician???
he, he! Quite an arrogant sort of gun slinger licks. Sounds so good. thanks a lot
Nice. Ughm I'm going to be doing some other kinds of stuff on my guitar. Slower crappier stuff but the pickin gettin a little better there's hope
Genius
Fun licks!
Yes, I can dig it!!
KING!
Where the slow motion a la TC Electronic?
Genius, genuinely
Is Greg playing the "factory" Indonesian version of his guitar or does he have a "custom shop US made" version of it ?
there are no custom shop usa made reverends now, they stopped being usa made a long time ago
I will now be putting all my guitars up for sale on Reverb
Dont Man... Here is the TAB th-cam.com/video/d8u7QxY-7tc/w-d-xo.html
Funny as an ad of an arpeggio shred guy from 'Brent Barker Music' appeared before Greg's video. You can definitely see how Greg's licks are leagues tastier than the guy in the ad. hahaha
That guy owns that guitar 🎸 😉
wow.
Can I have the tabs
I watched him live gave me an anxiety attack he was so good
What control and ownership of the instrument.
Lotsa Steve Morse, Dixie Dreg vibe in there 🎸🎸👍👍
Saw the title was was all, ‘yeah, maybe I can learn these!’. I was younger then and so optimistic.
Such nastiness..!
So sick ugh
Absolute badass. Peerless.
Awesome.
That last slide one though... :o
After 30 years of playing it only a 2 minute video to make me chuck my Les Paul in the dumpster.
I find myself thoroughly enjoying this tasty morsel of grekockery and it is gristlelicious indeed 🤘
To advanced for my simple ear bones....but he is amazing.
Hey thanks for playing those and not slowing anything down to explain them.
Some people are players and some people are teachers. Greg is 100% the former 0% the latter.
Alright but where’s the corresponding explanation video
