I find it extremely clever that this scene, when they start getting near the Tardis, it's so... off to the side. The camera doesn't focus on it or anything. It's just another object in the background until the Doctor walks up to it. Just how the Doctor said it blends in and nobody would notice it. Clever thing there.

Honestly, it sounds more like jumping out into the unknown.
All these things, out there. Fantastic things. Terrifying things. And all it takes is letting go and being flung out. It could be fun. It could be dangerous. It isn't something you just do.

Peter Capaldi said 9’s speech about how he could feel the turn of the earth and the speed at which they were traveling through space orbiting the sun is what sold him on the series when it began again. I agree; when I heard that speech I saw the fourth doctor behind Christopher Eccleston‘s performance. That blank look of pure awe and wonder yet tempered with knowledge. Like knowing everything there is to know about a sunset, yet still astonished and entranced by its simplicity and beauty as you watch it.

I love how it takes that idea, that awe and wonder of the universe which The Doctor feels, and somewhat twists it. He's scared of it now, focused on what would happen "if we let go" I think that really shows the damage the Time War did to him and the rest of New Who until 12 was him fixing that damage one step at a time to become who he was again.

    • @NightRunner417

The funny thing is, when you finally get to the point in real life when you look up at the stars and you swear YOU can feel it, you can feel that impossible feeling that you're just a speck stuck to the skin of a tiny little sphere hurtling away through an impossibly vast void, and for a moment in time you feel like you understand it just a little too well, _frighteningly_ well, you still can't get past that one nagging thought:
      "But why?"
There's no rational reason for any of it to exist, no matter what religion nor discipline you follow in life. That defiant aspect of reality, that root of all mysteries. And that's the one bit of magic that can never break and fall apart.

    • @kennethnystrom593
      @kennethnystrom593 ปีที่แล้ว

Fun extra fact about our Doctor that is somewhat conencted to this topic is.
      In Big Bang episode.
There was 3 separate entities that created the new Whoniverse.
The Doctor; Pandorica and the exploding TARDIS.
It so happens there is a another way to look at those 3.
The father; child (daughter in this case) and the holy ghost monument.
Yes I know most wont be able to spot it.
All I point at the following and you can start see it.
Doctor/father is quite obvious. So no need for anything deep indepth there.
      Pandorica and the TARDIS thou....
      requires a small explination
Ill begin with the TARDIS as it easier to see how the Pandorica could be of the same origin.
The TARDIS got ascended after it had dragged Gallifrey thru the void into the new WHoniverse.
      How?
Rassilon final plan for the end of time. (see pt 2 for details) as he had an device that would "burn" Gallifrey and ascend the Timelords at hte last moment of the Timewar.
AKA as the same moment Gallifrey was frozen...
I wont go into indepth what that means for the former Timelords more then they got split up into two opposing factions 1 ascended and 1 Quantum locked Schrödinger cat like state.
The interessting part right now is the "ascention wave" as that was not frozen by time being frozen. But was "frozen" as it passed thru the void as ther is no time at all there = nothing to move in.
But as soon the TARDIS exited the void the ascention wave rushed toward the TARDIS and the TARDIS....
      drum roll
Had to throw out JW to save her the Earth below from ascention.
(Yes PC last speach took place right after the 50th special while dragging Gallifrey thru the void)
= The last act of the TARDIS was to teleport away Gallifrey and the ascention wave, and at the same time/moment being killed. (one can partly see it happen in Twice upon a time)
= The dead shell of the TARDIS crashed down on to the terraforming former Gallifrey...
"While" (a ton of time later; think Millions if not Billions of years later) the ascended part took shape as the TARDIS JW have been traveling around in. = A Holy Ghost monument so to speak...
Next the tricky "hard part" to spot.
The virgin birthed child. And how our Doctor will become the new WHoniverse version of Virgin Mary.
There is a chance we already seen this with the Doctors Daughter-Jenny, but I suspect there will be an another virgin birthed child and that JWs original arc was to do just that (this was changed thou; the original plan was to make CC & JWs entire run the ultimate Christmas special...
Im skipping how series 11 is filled with Virgin Mary/Jesus connections, But here is a small taste; Three wise companions with 3 certain ethnic origins, Archangels, Man giving birth Abscent father issues, the Timeless child (the saviour child), having to walk away from those tha thave to die...& more + King James....
+ Series 11 promoart thats basicly same as medieval ichonography of Virgin Mary...
      and more...
      So how about the Pandorica?
River Song is actually the prime source for this and im talking about her death here.
Remember how the TARDIS really is looking like the Pandorica. source that 2d monster episode in the subway with Clara when the TARDIS shrank)
So back to River Song...Remember how River Songs mind in the impossible astronaut 2 parter was almost downloaded into that unfinished timemachine?
Thing is, that device was the exact same device that killed River Song. (You can see the "Crown of thorns" in the Impossible astronaut 2 parter)
AND this is a massive spoiler.
River Songs mind completed that unfinsihed timemachine in the library....= a brand new type of Timemachine was made to take over the empty spot left by the ascended TARDIS
Now here is key; the "Crown of thorns" Yes it could be an coincidence but its not, to much points toward it and it have been foreshadowed so hard. To many times for me to go in here now.
But remember back to the Pandorica opens.
it took place in about 110ADish..... and it is not beyond reasoning that the Pandorica was created in the first century around...33ADish about the same time as JW would have walked away from her kids death to let it happen as it already had as the Pandorica already had created the new Whoniverse...
This would then have been a possible transition over to as JW "regen" for a broken heart into a young roman marble lover.....
There are more to this but i need go to bed here....

@kennethnystrom593 If only this theory was true and expanded upon officially, it could have provided the next grand story arc like how Day of the Doctor shows us the sheer insanity of how Time Lords/Higher Order Species the Shadow Proclamation Mistress mentioned perceive existence in how the managed to both develop a WMD that was so beyond the scope of power and existence that it became a sentient AI and grew a conscience which managed to both give the one man willing to us it and damn his own soul to save all innocent life from the eternal suffering of thr Time War a chance to use it, and create a perceived reality which moulded him into a man who would continue that path and become known as the Harbinger of Death thanks to him being involved with some sort of cataclysm, only for those to understand that those apocalypses came at the final and last resort after all attempts at mitigating an even greater horror failed and his hand was forced to continue staining his soul in place of others, with those who he kept close helping to heal and cleanse him in the aftermath, a theory supported when 11 tells Amy and Rory of how little darkness they themselves possess and why they represent why The Doctor takes extreme care in who he invites to travel with him.

The 'Turn of the Earth' speech set the tone for the entire show for years to come imo ... It was SO powerful.
From that moment onwards the new Doctors would alway give us plenty of fun, laughs and comedy ... but at any moment, they could become intense ... delivering epic lines of dialogue that would remind us how old and wise the Doctor was.

  • @rosePetrichor

I forgot how good the dialogue was in this series. The writing got a bit more grandiose once Tennant came along, which was fine, it suited his more theatrical, flamboyant personality, but Eccleston *nailed* these kinds of exchanges. There was a *really* human, down to earth quality to these first few episodes, the London parts especially. The character dynamic between them is really believable, too. The Doctor is being standoffish due to him still hurting from the Time War and not wanting to get anyone else caught up in things any more. In the course of this conversation Rose impresses the Doctor in a lot of small ways with the things she asked questions about, and he slowly, carefully opened up in return. The whole conversation turns after he quietly asks her if she's okay. Such good writing

"...if we let go ...that's who I am." I always thought this speech was saying that the Doctor is the guy who can sense all the motion and complexity of the universe and understand what's going on when everyone else is disoriented, but it sounds like he's really saying that who he is is the chaos and terror that would happen if you chose to jump off of the Earth while it was spinning, because that's what you're doing when you go into his Tardis.

Eccleston was the perfect choice to reintroduce a new audience to Doctor Who. Whilst it would have been nice to see him do another series it showed he could regenerate to a new audience.
David Tennant is regarded as the best of the new era, but I don’t think it would have worked if he kicked the new era off. Eccleston to me is equally as good as Tennant and was the better choice to start the ball rolling again. Fantastic.

3:22 the choice to have him look so pained as he walks away was such an amazing idea. The veneer of his confident humour slips away and you ask yourself what is he upset about? Does he hate the burden of feeling the Earth spin? Is it the forced isolation he's putting himself in?

That's it, that's the moment that truly convinced me to watch the show. This speech combined with the first introduction of the 9th Doctor's theme... Yeah, I always got chills with this part. Christopher Eccleston's was really the right choice.

Eccleston was brilliant. He got me hooked on Dr. Who and I was disappointed to see him go. It took a while to warm up to Tennant, but I like him as well. I didn’t stay long enough to get to know Smith’s or Capaldi’s doctors but I may try to watch those seasons. Especially the ones with River Song. I loved her character too.

The speech is great, the chemistry is so entertaining, but what gets me about this scene more than anything is the look on Eccleston when he turns his back on Rose; all that comfort, charm?m, humour, disappears from his face and we see The Doctor as they truly are in that moment… hurt and, potentially, heartbroken. beautiful expression from Ecco

This is one of the reasons why I wish Eccleston could've stayed for a second series. While I like Tennant, I honestly preferred the chemistry between 9th and Rose than 10th and Rose. Never really cared much for the whole romance thing with 10th and Rose.

Just think how long the Doctor had been without a companion at this point. Didn't have one at the end of his eighth life, probably didn't have one throughout the Time War, and now here he is with this young human female (just his type), and he's desperate not to have her get too interested in him. That look on his face as he walks away says it all.
