The line with the most foreshadowing about Norman's mother being just a corpse is "She's as harmless as one of those stuffed birds." Because Norman stuffed her body with his taxidermy skills just like the birds.

Yep, it's super creepy in retrospect!

    • @cha5

I always remember when Norman was talking about his hobbies to Marion
      "I like to stuff birds"
Which is also British slang for "I like to f*** women"
Something that Hitchcock would have no doubt been well aware of.

    • @Xehanort10
      @Xehanort10 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@cha5 Me too since I'm British. The bit where Norman goes "I couldn't do that. Who'd look after her? She'd be alone up there, the fire would go out. It'd be cold and damp like a grave" since Norman stole Norma's body from her grave and took it back to the house.

Rob Ager did an analysis on the Psycho trailer and its pretty good. Hitch gives you so many hints about the twist. Plus I love how Psycho 2 makes Norman sane while everyone the rest is insane. And it works.

Perhaps my favorite horror movie of all time. I love the score, the acting, the cinematography. It’s a bit dated, sure, yet somehow the dialogue and story are so captivating that I still believe it holds up very well. Anthony Perkins kills it as Norman Bates. He’s able to make you sympathize with the character yet also keeps you on your toes as his little hints of insanity slips out. And the twist is brilliant. I always love looking back and seeing the foreshadowings and clues all building up to the grand reveal at the end. I consider Psycho an absolute masterpiece and a must-watch film for any fan of cinema.

The first proper film about split personality. Although the *'mother fixation'* angle for me was first touched upon in another classic film but different genre, *"White Heat"* played by a brilliantly pyschotic James Cagney. Hitchcock's classic is a influential groundbreaker.

"It's sad when a mother has to speak the words that condemn her own son, but I couldn't allow them to believe that I would commit murder. They'll put him away now as I should have years ago. He was always bad, and in the end he intended to tell them I killed those girls, and that man, as if I could do anything, except just sit and stare, like one of his stuffed birds. Oh, they know I can't even move a finger and I won't. I'll just sit here and be quiet just in case they do.... suspect me. They're probably watching me. Well, let them. Let them see what kind of a person I am. I'm not even going to swat that fly. I hope they are watching. They'll see. They'll see and they'll know, and they'll say, "Why, she wouldn't even harm a fly." 💀

What I like about this movie is that the characters aren’t sympathetic. That should be left up to the audience. If someone just killed my family member, I sure as hell wouldn’t be sympathetic.

I absolutely love Psycho, one of my all-time favorite horror movies! Although the shower scene receives the bulk of the attention, and rightfully so, the reveal of Norman as Mother was, for me, the most frightening scene in the movie. Norman's crazy, wide eyes during that moment is still terrifying. Anthony Perkins slayed this role, he was perfect!

Such an iconic film, one that has cast a long shadow over horror cinema ever since. Another subversive masterstroke was in the casting of Tony Perkins as Norman, at the time he was known for his romantic/boy next door roles, which Psycho completely upended, forcing him to make movies in Europe. He would famously return to the role for the sequels in the 1980s. Incidentally, check out Peeping Tom, released around the same time by Powell, once vilified but now regarded as a classic - arguably the British answer to Psycho.

I understand spoiler alerts, but good movies, novels and TV shows stand up to spoilers and rewatches. There are a few exceptions where a surprise twist is so good that you can look back on the build up and say wow that was worth the surprise. But the exceptions prove the rule, and and even then rewatching shouldn't reduce the enjoyment much.

Psycho is quite possibly the most influential film ever made. Without it, there would be no Bonnie and Clyde to give full creative freedom to directors and kick off the New Hollywood Era, no Halloween to keep Psycho's type of horror relevant, so on and so forth. If it weren't for Psycho, American cinema wouldn't be what it is today, and creative experimentation would be limited to foreign films only

you ever notice in the scene where Merion is thinking about her boss she robs, *she looks into the camera AND SMILES like norman does at the of end of the film?* just after the shot at the 8:36 in this video.
And as norman's mother's narration ends the film, the last shot goes from him to merion's car being pulled from the swamp? Women fooling the patriarchy. Hence why Merion commands the 1st half of the film, she passes the torch to Norman- the film even opens on merion not eating her sandwich in a bedroom, whereas when she meets norman, she goes from eating sandwiches alone in her bedroom to eating with norman in the birds of prey room.
As for Thrillers vs Suspense vs Horror, I submit:
Thrillers make you breathe faster - maybe faster editing
Suspense make you hold your breath - maybe longer takes
Horror is to Disturb - maybe questioning societal norms or disturbing (not disgusting) imagery

  • @Tymbus

There are terrible exposition scenes in a number of Hitchcock films but each has a function - in North by Nortwest hitchcock maks absolutely sure audiences know Caplan doesn't exist. The exposition in The Birds(in the cafe scene) outlines the wider threat, the sheer number of birds but this is a bit of misdirection as the 'real' explaination lies in the film's sub text. In Psycho the explaination for Bates's motives can only be delivered at the end or the shock revelation in the celler would be undermind
