Citric acid is amazing for my kettle. It's safe and healthy and works sooooooo well.

Lemon Juice does the same thing and so does Vinegar.

Yes, lemon juice is citric acid, but unless you get a load of cheap lemons, this is a cheaper way to do it. And you don't get a coffee machine that tastes lemony afterwards. White vinegar is acetic acid in water, but again, smells vinegary.

You had almost no limescale in your kettle to begin with so going by Grace’s rather imprecise instructions the 1/3 cup might have been overkill.
I do think I might be able to see limescale around the rim of the lid though and the only way I’ve found to deal with limescale at the top is to fill the kettle up with descaler solution way higher than the “max” indicator and actually turn it on and boil it like that. You need to stand by ready to turn it off immediately if the bulk of the water starts to rise up towards the lid. It is a little dangerous. But it does result in a completely clean kettle.

Thanks for the tips, I don't think the camera really picked up the limescale to start with that well. It's definitely got my kettle cleaner. I've not felt the need to repeat the cleaning but it's probably back to where it was in terms of limescale now. Not sure how I feel about filling it up all the way beyond the max level sounds a bit dangerous!
