Still, the war affected Spain in many ways. One of the consequences was the establishment of a huge arms industry that supported France and other fighting nations.

Spain in this time was a mess, Barcelona and some other cities seemed like the Wild West, with gunman's all over the places shooting each other for politic issues.
Helped by the abundance of guns and scarcity of regulation.
This was durig the post 1917. During the first years things were ok.

It was called anarchism and it was a terrorist movement all over the world.
Well, not all were anarchists, the industrial bosses also paid gunmen to kill the syndicalist leaders.
Europe; Entente or Allies?
Spanish Royal Family: yes.
I would also mention the puny response to Spanish victims of German submarine attacks, famously the musician Granados on the Sheffield in 1916 but also merchant vessels. Also, the large office set up by King Alfonso XIII to locate missing combatants in POW camps. Families from all over wrote to Madrid in a last ditch effort to locate their loved ones, sometimes with success. The office negotiated the release of some celebrities. The office documents have been researched.

What if Spain entered the war on the Central Powers side in August 1914? Would France be able to fight in two fronts? Would Italy be more commited to join the war on the Central Powers side? What would have happened?
Well, it would probably end up in a Spanish Civil War during WW1, as Indy explained that the country was deeply divided. In my opinion, I think it would have distanced nations from the CPs, as they don't want to end up like Spain.
As for France, they both would probably bog down in the Pyrenees, which may help the Germans gain some ground (say, instead of being along the Ainse maybe they would be along the Marne), but not enough to change the outcome of the war.
Spain was way too divided internally. The seeds to the civil war were already in place at this time.
It would have gotten stomped, Spain's economy and military were a joke. Not only that, Spain's society was deeply divided between the ruling right and the dissenting left. The Entente would've had a field day igniting rebellions everywhere.
Spain could have been like Italy and trick the entente but they would have to fight on 2-3 fronts
People is saying that the Spanish army at that time was pretty bad and it's true, but it's not that simple actually. Spain had not the power to destroy French armies on the field, but if France had tried to invade Spain, maybe it wouldn't end well for the French. Spain has a very complicated geography with lots of mountains everywhere and has nearly no navigable rivers. Communications are bad and every region of the country is relatively isolated from the others. Militarily speaking, Spain is similar to Afghanistan. Not a great thread but can be very problematic.
Hispano-Suiza engines, used in allied aircraft (like the famous Spad 7 & or Spad 13), were manufactured in Spain.

@@peterstadlmaier3107 , Hispano-Suiza 8 aviation engines were produced in several of the company's factories (in France ... and in Spain), as well as, under license, by numerous companies in many countries of the world (Great Britain, Italy, Russia, and the U.S.).
They made some fine cars back then too, if you like prewar cars

You miss King Alfonso's involvement in the Red cross and the welfare of war prissoners. Also de the anarchist's revolts and strikes predate the Great war by at least three years. Spain aldo made a fortune lelling mules and horses to France. The technological advance offered by Spain to France and it's allies was paramount in aircraft engines, the Hispano-Suiza 300 hp aircraft engine was to the Great War what the Rolls-Royce Merlin was to WW II. The Spad and S.E. 5 had hispano engines.

You Forgot that one of the factors that made Spain be Neutral was that Spain was having the Rif War against the Moroccan Rebels directed by Ab el-Krim against the control of Spain in the Rif,the northern part or Morocco.

I know it would be a monumental project, but with all the crazy happenings across the world after the war, maybe you guys should consider simply continuing the show into 1919, 20, etc.. Scale back the show to once a month after the war ends, and just keep going! Wishful thinking on my part perhaps. The whole Great War team is awesome!
They've already said that they will touch on those events in some capacity after November '18.
Parts of the world were still suffering from the flu pandemic well into 1919. If they do an episode about the flu, they could probably keep going into the early 1920s about how the world reacted to such an enormous loss of life on the heels of a world war.
Yeah, WW1 was less a singular war than it was a period of conflicts. Balkan Wars, Chinese Civil War, Italo-Turkish War, Mexican Civil War, then the Great War proper, Russian Civil War, Soviet-Polish War, Turkish wars against French, Italians, and Greeks, rebellion in Ireland, Civil wars and coups in Germany and Hungary, and the UK's desperate struggles to control its newly acquired lands in the Middle East after the war(In fact, the Brits actually wanted the US to annex the Caucasus region as a LoN Mandate, but Wilson wouldn't have it). Interesting stuff. But then we're approaching the 1930s, with more civil war in China, Japan annexing Manchuria, and US interventions in Central America and the Caribbean.

Almost everyone in Spain was pro Allies. Only part of the carlist movement was "germanophilic", indeed, the movement split in two parts because of this.
And the Canary Islands have never been a colonial possession.

Perhaps other important contribution of Spanish industry to WWI were the Hispano-Suiza aircraft engines, much used in Entente airplanes, and license manufactured in several countries.

Great episode, I loved it so much, although I would have talked about Alfonso XIII "Oficina Pro Cautivos" which helped and saved over 200000 soldiers of all countries (in fact he was candidate of Nobel Peace Price)

I really like thoses quick intevention of C&Rsenal in the video. It's not as in depth as on his channel, but suits a non-gun.maniac like me just fine, while adding knowledge on the economics and logistics of Ww1.
One reads about the retaking of Granada and develops nothing but huge respect! In my opinion it was one of most impressive military deeds of all History. As they usually say: ¡Arriba Isabel and Viva Espana!
This said, I congratulate the Spaniards for being out of the mechanized carnage of WW1.

silvioevan11 There is a lot of time between the conquest of granada and ww1. Spain didn't even exist in the XVth century. There weren't our modern ideas of nations in the middle ages and mentality was obviously very different. I aggree that it's a cool period to study, but be careful relating it to completely different contexts.

I am basque and It was funny how you pronounced those basque words, Gabilondo y Urresti are two basque surnames. The weapon industry was concentrated in the basque country, and some factories still prevail despite the spanish civil war bombings. Great video.

10:05 You should have mentioned the struggles in Morocco between the Spanish government and the Rif tribes, which meant several reservists called to serve since 1911 to 1925 (when the situation stabilised), and a lot of budget spent in defense (Spain expent about 30% of their budget in defense, although being theoretically in peacetime). Also, you didn't mention the Spanish chief of staff, the experienced general Valeriano Weyler (who had fought in the Spanish-American war having some success at land which couldn't be exploited due to the lack of reinforcements and the US blockade, he also was a pro-German and had a really cool look, at least when wearing a Pickelhaube).

I would have mentioned the poor state of Spain in this period. It wasn't a modern country yet. Industrialization kept to a couple provinces, was incredibly corrupt and a lot of people remained poor illerates working the fields, not much different from XVIII and XIXth centuries. The complete breakdown of the empire left everyone fighting against each other, ruins, intellectual apathy and pessimism and political civil struggle for centuries. With time sides or reasons change but we keep fighting each other with hate. It left us decades behind european nations and we will never completely heal those wounds.
Short arms were almost all made in the Basque Country, a centuries' traditional industry destroyed only recently by the so-called "industrial reconversion" (or rather industrial devastation).

CURIOSITY:
The Spanish Army have 750.000 soldiers in 1917 (250.000 profesionals with years of experience) meanwhile the US Army only have 120.000 recruits.
Than US army boomed to about 2 million soldiers in summer of 1918(most were in Europe).
Except the US can rapidly expand their armies if needed to.

From a book I partially read about Belgium, Spain was very concerned about the condition of civilians in this neutral, occupied, Catholic land, and spoke out about atrocities. Don't know what they could do about getting food relief in during the war....

South American countries were im economic development during WWI period in Europe.
Spain also had Western Sahara during that time. Also, after the war of 1898, Spain sold their remaining Pacific Ocean islands to the German Empire.

Hello Indy, love the show. Been watching since mid 2016 and have been hooked ever since. Question for out of the trenches. How were American troops trained for WWI? The last major conflict America was involved in was the Spanish American war, and since then a lot of new ways to kill had been invented. Were they taught how to deal with things like poison gas, airplanes, hand grenades, and semi automatic rifles? Were they taught that tactics like cavalry charges had now been significantly reduced in effectiveness?

11:28 The coup of Rivera was caused actually by a military defeat in Morocco, called the Annual disaster, in which a Spanish general ordered a great offensive on the narrow mountain pass of Annual, which ended in a great failure due to having his flanks unprotected and the fact that some "regular" units deflected to the Moroccan cause. As the war in Morocco dragged more and more resources, the confidence in the government dropped and, as a way to prevent revolutionary activities, general Primo de Rivera launched a coup, promising to be "a temporary government until the situation had stabilised" (actually it was a 7-years dictatorship followed by two transition governments, the first one led by general Berenguer and the second one led by admiral Aznar).

French, Brit and Italian navies would blow the invasion ships and escorts to peaces before they even see Italian shores, or better still, wait for them to land, smash the ships and cut off logistics and then have Hotzi's army surrender.
