I don't think the problem is his smell (or his hygiene) , but rather the smell of the entire fortress , which , altho has regular maintenance , it's still an underwater prison where people work on machinery and beat each other up in the ring. "Nice smell" isn't something most people would associate with a prison , let alone one where the best ways to make money are through ring combat and labor , the perfume would just , you know , barely have any effect. In the case that the fortress doesn't smell that much , then perfumes could actually prove a problem for the guards , as they can be used to hide away smells that would normally be an indication of someone doing something wrong in the fortress. He doesn't stink, he is simply living in a fortress, without any ventilation. Just go and work in any factory for 6 hours and your clothes start to stink from dust, metal and gasoline (telling from my own experience) and he LIVES 24/7 365 days in year, so no matter how often you wash yourself you will still smell like a rusty metal

Guys if he doesn’t like medication like morphine(pain killers) it might be because of the same reason of his past that certain perfume smells bring him back memories it’s scientifically proven that perfumes and smells hold memories, so well yes the joke that he likes to be stinky is funny it might actually have a deeper meaning behind it or a more simple explanation some people are prone to headaches from perfumes, I’m just trying to think outside the box here.
