  • Named after the eponymous philosopher Epicurus (341 - 270 B.C.), the Epicurean school was one of the more popular if controversial doctrines to emerge during the Hellenistic period. Arguing that “Death is nothing” and denying the existence of the afterlife, Epicurus and his followers sought to explain the world through empirical observation and the famous theory of atoms and the void, looking to live the best life by embracing pleasure and avoidance of pain.

Calling a philosophy based entirely off of prudence as degenerate is probably the most idiotically degenerate response possible to such a rich and beneficial way of life and thinking. Not to say it’s perfect, epicureanism isn’t, but it can definitely help people at certain stages in their lives. And when combined with other philosophies, it most certainly can be a great tool for living a tranquil, peaceful, and abundant life.

How can Epicurus have deconstructed evil by criticising “God” if the Greeks weren’t monotheistic? They believed in “the gods”.

What a degenerate idea. Interesting, but I cannot agree with many points. Thanks for uploading, this series is great. Way better than hacks like Historia Civilis.

If you think the Epicureans are hedonistic (for lack of a better word) wait until the Cyrenaics. Glad to see you’re enjoying the series, but don’t up on HC too bad though, he does produce some solid content

@@HellenisticAgePodcast My problem with HC is his anarchist bent and his tendency to talk down to historical figures that definitely did more than he ever will, like Caesar and Alexander the Great. I still enjoy his animations, and he has a solid grasp of presentation, but I prefer how you go into detail and list your sources more thoroughly.

@@Jsay18 I think he tries to give a counterweight to the historical bias since the victor writes history. And given some contemporary accounts both Ceaser and Alexander were egomaniacal. Not to say they also achieved great things. But one does not counteract the over.

      Degenerate how?

    • @wangking4259

@@johnmanno2052 I doubt Jsay18 was thinking in any way when introduced to the ideas of Epicurus or when writing that comment. It’s quite likely that they just wrote that comment based ofd their preconceived notions of what this philosophy is and what it should be viewed and treated as.
If you want more evidence that this person is an unthinking person, they watched a video on Spartans and referenced their society as a “tomboy supremacy”. And I don’t think this person understands what degeneracy is, considering that their channel is almost entirely based on video games. Not that I’m saying video games are degenerate, I just don’t think the sort of person who plays video games all the time should be considered or consider themselves as an authority on degeneracy.
