Train Your Dog To Come When Called By Making It Fun For Them - Professional Dog Training Tips

  • The fastest way to train your dog to come when called is by making it fun for them! Sometimes we talk to people about the reasons that their dog may not be responding to their come command. There could be many factors that cause the dog to not be too interested in responding immediately to what could potentially be a life-saving command! Reasons like "he always comes when I show him treats" or maybe people use their come command too often in situations where the dog doesn't really have to respond to that word. The best way to make sure that your come command works reliably is to practice it. And be sure to not just practice it in your house, or in situations where the dog doesn't have any other choice to make. Having your dog distracted like they most likely would be in a real emergency scenario is a great way for your dog to learn that responding to the come command is the BEST thing that they can do! We will talk about some ways that will help you to teach your dog how to respond to the come command the first time, every time!

    I taught my dog to come and then sit in front of me and give him treats as a reward but he hasn’t been having fun with that which is how I found this video! I’m hoping he can still be calm and controlled when I need him to be

    I appreciate you guys so much. I just took over the care of my brothers one and a half yr old German Shepherd. She needs SO much training and socialization. She is beautiful and super smart but she has bad manners (not her fault). I only wish the other people in the house would work with us to get her to a better place. GSD and I get 1 step forward and then they cause us to go 2 steps back.

    Hi!! I love your videos, thanks for them! And this one in particular was super helpful! I have 3 dogs, one 16yo border collie, a border collie mix 11mo and a border collie puppy (3mo), and usually I strugle wanting to do everything with all 3 together (training, walking, having fun time etc) . Never occured to me that it was so important (and helpful) to have some alone time with each of them, and I believe some behaviours I'm trying to correct may be linked to that. It would also be super helpful if you could make some more videos with tips related to "pack training and management" for people that like me have 3 or more dogs and want to have a great relationship between all dogs and the humans in the house.

      Hi there, Kathleen! The benefit of using a dog who understands the skill a little better is that we can slow down the progressions. So that we can teach you, instead of being too focused on teaching the dog! Here is a link to an example where Harriet the Mastiff learns to take food gently. I had to come up with a couple of unique camera angles to illustrate the learning process;) Thanks for watching! ~Ken

    Loved this! I'll try out using both toys and treats as I'd like to work on recall outside a lot more (on a long line since we don't have a yard). My puppy's recall has improved a lot since beginning agility training, but he still gets distracted at times and we are still working on improving his handler focus because he's too friendly to everyone. :)

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s helpful to have someone help you that won’t make a fuss over him when he tries to greet them. Have someone help you, and instruct them to not respond if he happens to get so distracted that he leaves you. It will be a lot less rewarding when he gets there😉 A longline is also a great way to stop him from leaving. A couple little bumps on the line as he’s leaving, then praise him when he stops running away and heads back toward you!
      You’ll have to let me know which he prefers. Will a toy or food be more appealing when it comes to trading? Be sure you’re using good timing! You don’t want to be dependent on having a food or a toy with you when you want him to “out”. Happy Training! ~Ken

    Your videos are helping me so much! We just got a new Weimaraner, and he's one smart pup. He's 14 weeks training is going really well. But when we're at a big field and after exercising trying to get him over to put his lead back on is an absolute nightmare. So I'm going to try this :)

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, Claire! For the next while, you should ensure all of your rewarding is happening close to your body. Your knuckles should be touching your shins any time your Weim is being rewarded after playing. Start to build more value for being really close to you. Close enough that you can put his collar on easily😉. Happy Training! ~Ken

    would you say it's beneficial for dogs to be overexcited by food or toy rewards to help when training? Or will that cause frustration in future training? For instance, the dog starts whining, being stressed, or just checks out.

    Wow,she is a lovely and impressive young dog. Thanks for the great tips. My ACD returns pretty well most of the time so can obviously do with more practice. We go to the beach most days and she loves to play with a ball (strong play drive not much for food) but when it's time to leave she is starting to keep out of reach. I've practiced clipping her leash and then releasing her for more play but she always knows when it's the "for real" time to leave . Is there anything I can do to help get her off the beach or is it just the case of more practice and lots of it? Thanks again for your videos,they're so helpful 😀👍

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, beachpups umina! This is a pretty common challenge for people. Your ACD has an amazing ability to know when it's time to go home, and likely knows EXACTLY how long your arms are so she can't be leashed;)You need to put a light, long-line on her. That will allow you to practice your recall, and your recall ending (which is where a lot of people struggle, so you're not alone). You can work you ball retrieves, and include a leash being clipped on as the action that is the ending for each repetition. Having that long line will allow you to try these exercises with your actual leash, but if she doesn't want to listen, you'll still have control of the long line, and she can't put herself into a dangerous situation, or a bad learning experience. Being at the beach is lots of fun for her, and I can appreciate that she wouldn't want to leave. But by training her through the leash attaching part of your recall, you'll build tons of value for that behavior specifically. You can even attach her leash and play a game of tug if she really loves toys. Keep me posted on your progress, and Happy Training! ~Ken

    I have a dog, she's a 10mo old, outdoor poodle-pyranese mix and i can't get her motivated by anything, even bacon! She always wants to do her own thing and lately we've been having to tie her up because she wanders over a mile away and off our homestead. When in a leash, she's obedient as can be. When she's not on a leash however, she'll walk away from you while calling her, even when waving food or toys. She doesn't seem to be motivated by anything. How do I reinforce recall and what other things might i try to motivate her?
