How do we know about settling velocity ? we have to calculate or it is assumed

Designing of grit chamber is based on the principal of gravitation.

Yes...there is no criteria to determine Crest of weir and free board but you can determine depth by assuming detention period(45 to 90 seconds).

Sir, why was specific gravity provided if it had no application in the designing then?
In this Design, settling velocity is given but in some cases we have to calculate settling velocity, for that purpose we need specific gravity.
