Had a run in with Rob at a gas station in Sacramento when I was about 20. I was hungover AF, I rolled in for a fill blasting Victim of changes, Rob was just standing there pumping his petrol and I just stood there dumbfounded…he threw up the horns and said, “hey, nice tunes!” The. He drove off into the sun. I’ll never forget it!!
I am a little jealous of any male vocalist that can reach higher notes than I can. Having said that, if I get to heaven when I'm dead, I fully expect all the angels to have Rob Halford's voice.
What's up with all the Dickinson comments?? This is a Rob Halford appreciation audio clip! (and his insanely high vocal register!!) Let's enjoy the man's magic for God's sake
I've given up on comparing Halford and Dickinson. I absolutely love them both. I went through a HUGE Iron Maiden phase. Still love them, ive been listening to Judas Priest as of late and holy shyteee Rob Halford is one talented man!
I like how ominous this sounds. Like it truly is the apocalypse and the singing is summoning the Painkiller. Then when he does finally show up you get the actual song.
gasmaskboi19371945 Yeah, but for a death metal singer. He knew it was better to scream it than to try and sing it operatically. Chuck did always say though that he didnt like his performance on that cover, but again, better to try your own interpretation that try to match Rob.
In the center of the Universe is a single sonic sound... that is vibrating constantly and if we could reach out and hold onto that note. We'd see our minds are free, oh there Free.. That single sonic sound in the center of all that there is... is \m/ Rob The METAL GOD Halford \m/
for those peoples whom making an arguments between Rob & Bruce..I have to say Rob is better for the way of vocal..he has more powerful tessitura, more vocal technique in terms of clean & distorted,he even growling..for those said Rob was falsetto it wasn't right either..he used distorted mixed voice,it's happening when you're on maximum notes, maximum voice over the tessitura..however,the consistency may goes to Bruce..but the whole point in terms of vocal I will choose Rob...I know what I'm talking about because I'm a singer for 25 years in heavy, thrash, power & death metal bands..I've also taught my son to sing he's now 25
I love Maiden, and Bruce is a fantastic singer, but Rob Halford is far better. There's a reason they call him the Metal God. As for that horse-rapist who said "[Halford's] already lost his range," what the fuck do you mean "already"? The man's in his fucking sixties. The fact that he's still singing at all is a testament to his Metal Godliness.
Gregg Mather you can't compare those two they're voices are so different from one another, they both deliver something very special with they're voices, all i am saying is they are both gods, greatests metal vocalists to ever come out of britain in my opinion
Gregg Mather total bull shit. First of all he is not called The Metal God because is he is the better singer, he is called that because Preist wrote a song called Metal Gods and he was obviously the singer on it. Bruce has a better voice, its more powerful.
***** A) no its not B) even if it were that is not how you measure how powerful someones voice is. Its obvious when listening to songs like Son of a Gun or Man of Sorrows that Bruce does have the more powerful sounding voice.
+Kevin Q Bruce might have a slightly smaller vocal range, but vocal range does not equal a powerful voice. Bruce's voice has so much more layer and feel in it, and just has power. Rob's voice is just so.. Thin. I dunno, it feels like it could break any second.
No Dio, no Bruce, no Ripper...just Rob! The greatest metal singer ever, nobody is in the same league with him for vocal range, interpretation and emotions he delivers.
saying Deep Purple were not a metal band, Deep Purple, wasn't a metal band, however, Machine Head, is a Heavy Metal album from Deep Purple, it was even called that when it first came out, and was one of the most influential heavy metal albums on the NWOBHM.
They both are, the big difference with them is their uniqueness, and ability to both sing, and scream, and are both amazing, love Devin, he's in all honesty my favorite singer, is Chris Cornell, but technically speaking, sometimes I think Mike Patton is the greatest there is, no contest, guys insane, and seems to have absolutely no limits to his voice.
Bruce, and Dio, have consistency that not much either singers have. I love Rob, but I've seen a lot of live videos of him losing his voice halfway through the show. Oh, Heiman is amazing, no idea what he's been doing though, he was in Lost Horizon, then Heed, but I haven't heard any new stuff, and really? So many people I know that love this kind of metal, knock grunge and hate Chris lol, awesome!
@guitartur It's entirely possible to have a clean transition from falsetto to modal voice. Just a matter of technique. But you're right, it doesn't sound like falsetto.
@chefmastershake I tried to reply to your comment I saw in your email, but it was taken down, Black Sabbath indeed all around, was the first metal band. Deep Purple's first album with Gillan was a more blues, and classically influenced hard rock album, however Machinehead came out after Black Sabbath, and was indeed, and still is considered today to be one of the greatest HEAVY METAL albums to date.
king diamond isnt technically the most classically "Good" singer but he used what he had an expanded it. he is an incredible songwriter and composer and comparing the two is futile. King Diamond has more in common with Dave Byron's (Uriah Heep) use of falsetto than Halford's head voice
@WishmasterTheDark do you know who Eric Adams watched, and admired for the vocals he had, to learn what he did? Now I don't think anybody can really outscream Ian Gillan at least when he was in his prime, and up until a good amount of the 80s into the 90's, guys completely amazing, and still has it somewhat. Matt Barlow is great too.
@DavidKinner no i was serious..his range and abilities are the best, i have never heard anyone even close. Thats my opinion on actual "screaming" gutteral vocals
@DecoSBoss that scream was not falsetto, if you want to know... you can clearly hear how he descends from head voice to chest voice without cracking, clear head voice...
Ive just realized this, but halfords high but melodic screams act as an interesting precursor to Travis Ryan's vocals on the most recent Cattle Decapitation albums
Rob was 40 years old when he sang this song, amazing.

no one calls you the metal god just because you are a nice guy. Halford earned that title with songs like this. Long live Rob and Priest.

5:42 don't tell me he hold this insane note for 20 seconds
great chords AND lungs
Youpre the one with the Painkiller picture in his profile, you tell me
Always tried to sing along with it as a kid; never managed it once.

The way he managed to hold that note at 5:42 for so long is insane. I wish he could recreate that in live performances.
I never realized all the reverb that's on his voice
all metal singers use effects, hate to break it to ya

What attracted me to this song were the vocals, have always found them very impressive. This isolated version reaffirms said thought.

why the hell are people in such disagreement, we are metal heads! We respect and love all our metal bands! this awesome!
amazing. Halford's got a real thunder voice!
He is da BEAST!!!
And, of course, THE MASTER!
Even the low notes are hard to reach. Only a true God can sing this, and by this I mean only Halford.

gasmaskboi19371945 Yeah, but for a death metal singer. He knew it was better to scream it than to try and sing it operatically. Chuck did always say though that he didnt like his performance on that cover, but again, better to try your own interpretation that try to match Rob.
zaakknight Its not the low notes themselves, its the fact that he has the range to do both. Name any other high screamer who can get that low.
how low? E2? Bruce can, lee roth can, I can, devin tyownsend can. Its not that hard. Singing this high for a long while is harder.
2:00 OH MY FUCKING GOD.
