If you're ever curious to watch a dev actually explain that this is their whole philosophy towards game design, watch Bungie's panel at the GDC on how and why they went with a live-service model for Destiny. It's wild to hear such a big dev actually explain that the #1 objective is to keep players hooked without trying too hard

@@_Bungus When I was in college for game development in 2014, I had the opportunity to go to Ubisoft Toronto and we presented our final game projects to two of the senior devs. It was a while back, but one point I remember them stressing is that games need to be designed around a 'core gameplay loop'. Current AAA philosophy is that gameplay needs to be in a constant cycle feeding into itself so that players stay engaged in the product.

This is my feelings exactly with Breath of the Wild (and Tears of the Kingdom as well) and Genshin Impact. I love BotW to death, so I figured I might enjoy Genshin as well. I tried playing it, but there were so many tiny little things about the gameplay that just felt *wrong*. For example, the fact that you had multiple different level systems (Adventure level, character level, weapon level, etc.) felt almost immersion-breaking to me because I didn't feel like I was exploring a world, I felt like I was playing a boring RPG. Add on the looming and ever-present gacha mechanics, and I couldn't stand playing it. Even though it's in theory super similar to a game I love, just a few tweaks from that game made it feel so much worse.

Grim Dawn was the answer for me, a game that was closer to the Diablo II experience I was looking for, more so than Diablo III/IV or PoE etc.
It is simple enough to grasp the basics/mechanics as you start your adventure and you aren't forced (like PoE) to learn its intricacies/skill trees to have a viable build and have fun.
For example: You can choose the Occultist class and dump ALL your point into your Pets, you can go the route of a caster with your debuff auras and poison missiles, or even buff your Weapon's attack and imbue it with Chaos damage. OR you can do ALL 3 at the same time. And when you hit level 10, the game lets you pick an additional class to compliment your build.
You can enhance your existing skills and make the second class a support one, you can go for a glass cannon build and focus solely on DMG on both classes or even turn the tables and make the secondary class your primary class. The player is NOT punished for making the "wrong" choice in classes OR point investment.
Now, of course some class combinations are more powerful/viable than others, but they are designed in a way that *almost* every class is compatible with the other.
Say you pick the Soldier class which primarily deals Physical dmg; You can pair it with the Arcanist class (that is Aether/Elemental dmg focused) and by using the Class inherent Skill Modifiers, change the Physical dmg that your Soldier skill does to Elemental dmg to have a more cohesive build.
OR you can use Monster Infrequent items (That aren't Epic or Legendary in rarity) that drop from enemy mobs and are easy to get, that have skill modifiers baked in, modifiers that *can* completely change how a skill works, either by converting one damage type to another, to making a skill now deal AoE dmg, or make it have a longer cooldown but deal an additional type of damage, etc.
There is at *least* one Legendary armour set for every class combination in the game, so if you are more inclined to farm Legendaries, that is the route to go.
But you shouldn't care about all the details unless you want to delve into end-endgame stuff. You can have fun nonetheless, use the skills that appeal to you, be it auras, pets, lightning strikes...
tl;dr It offers you choice, encourages creativity and player expression in an accessible way, that doesn't punish the "wrong" class choice or point investment.
Also, Grim Dawn's lore and worldbuilding puts other ARPGs to shame, imho...

I also heavily agree with the take about things being restricted to certain gear types. I think for some things, like weapon speed primarily appearing on gloves, sure, that makes sense. But for general build defining things, allowing the player to experiment with all kinds of gear is really only a positive. Diablo 2 Eastern Sun let you forge and d-stone gear, which were incremental improvements, and let you add anything to anything. It also let Oskills roll on everything. It was insanely open in terms of what could roll with what, and it was so much more interesting than just looking at "X.Y% more damage to enemies based on some condition."

"Whoa, what the heck is this? DEMONHIDE GLOVES? Stronger than steel gauntlets? equip them right now!" They did that while REUSING ART ASSETS.
I was a dopey kid when I played and I never finished Nightmare difficulty, so I never got the most powerful items in the game, but you got that feeling of finding cool stuff at every difficulty level. For a developer making money by selling mtx, the goal is to keep players playing as long as possible. The best way to do this is to make a fun engaging game… but the EASIEST way to do this is to make a game that gives players tiny gains and slightly better rewards for long amounts of time spent playing.
RPG type games used to be time spent = more fun. Now it’s time spent = more better stats. Jermas comment towards the end about “I want to be able to waste resources on dumb stuff and not care” is such a great take.

PoE has the same problem honestly. It used to be you got to endgame and that was that, you could optimize your build, you could mindlessly grind maps or campaign areas, you could reroll, you could dump a bunch of currency into some completely awful idea for kicks, once you got to endgame every road was open. Now it's like, you get to endgame, but that's just level 1 endgame, the really cool stuff is still 30 hours away. Your build isn't even fully functional until level 5 endgame. The game is always pushing you to go higher instead of simply opening the door and letting you choose where to go. Which then makes rerolling and everything else less fun because you already dumped two 40-hour workweeks into getting there in the first place.

The whole "haha unhinged streamer, big idiot, never makes a coherent point" thing chat does can be fun and really create an interesting vibe for streams, but I wish it wasn't a 24/7 thing on his streams. This is not just a well articulated rant, but it points to issues that reflect on the wider games industry, not just Diablo. It's putting into words something that I've felt lately but couldn't describe. So many games feel empty nowadays and it isn't just AAA games anymore. A lot of indie games also just don't capture me. I thought it was a problem with me but then the occasional ray of light pops up and grabs me just like games did growing up.
And it's exactly what he described. The difference between making a game and making something people actually want to play. So many games now are just ideas. "Oh it's like Escape from Tarkov but in space", "Oh it's like battlefield but with 1000 players and AI on giant maps". These aren't actual fleshed out games they're just an idea turned into the most empty, lifeless shell of a game, sold for $20-$80 and never finished. Frankly the AAA space for all it's flaws just ended up boring me because it churned out the same game a million times and it got old. The indie scene is almost harder for me because it keeps throwing ideas at the wall but they're just that. Ideas. Not things designed to get you to play them, and enjoy them. I don't know how many more "Stardew Valley meets Terraria" pixel games I can stomach. I don't know how many more open world survival games I can spend money on knowing they'll never be finished.
I think more and more of us are just tired. I'm not saying fun games don't exist, but they're few and far between and even fewer capture you the same way these truly great games did. And it's not just nostolgia, it's the difference between a game (a thing made to be fun) and a product (a thing made to cash in on a known brand, or to make money selling you on its formula or what games its "like")

D4 also suffers from not making enough aspects for all builds to be viable as well. Aside from what Jerma said, aspects are small pool of bonuses that randomly roll on a small set of items but they also only effect specific skills so if you like a certain playstyle sorry, the dev's decided that wasn't viable and you don't get to play that way.

This is the dumbest take ever. I've seen multiple people say this and it's simple untrue. PoE is a good game, but it's not a D2 sequel. Like, not even close. It's way too overly complex, and the graphics fucking suck. One of the first things Jerma says is that he enjoys the relative simplicity of D2. PoE is NOT simple. Not even close. You need to look up entire guides to beat the game.
PoE 2 is going to bridge the gap with the graphics, and I'm sure I'll enjoy playing it like I enjoyed playing PoE, but let's be real. It's not D2.

9:37 A unique ring (or amulet) dropping in d2 was/is huge and exciting. Like the potential for like a Stone of Jordan was exciting itself, but rings and amulets had effects that were so universally useful that getting a unique drop was a whole event. So Jerma saying that it’s not even worth caring if a legendary ring drops in d4 says a lot.

    • @Snarbalax
      @Snarbalax ปีที่แล้ว

He's also completely wrong because you should be checking every single legendary for the affixes you actually want to use on gear for your build but whatever.

@@Snarbalax the rings are fucking boring though, just because the item might be a good upgrade doesn’t mean the itemization isn’t still boring.
Seeing a unique ring drop in D2 was hype, it could be an SOJ or a BK Band, maybe it’s a weird high level ring like Wisp Projector. Maybe it was a low level magic find ring like Manald Heal.
I don’t care about “prefix ring of suffix” that does 13% increased damage to monsters standing 3.4 yards away while also doing jumping jacks and yelling ice cream, while slowed and fortified.

the people who made diablo and diablo 2 are long dead, either moved on to poe or torchlight....both which are incredibly good games with characteristics of diablo
diablo 3 and 4 is proof blizzard no longer knows what they are doing, just a bloated bureaucracy of a company of mainly useless people
i know its harsh but consumers of america needs to learn how to stop consuming said product just because it reminds u of a certain franchise and good old times but has none of the original, its like companies want u to buy something because of nostalgia but tell u its a new and improved version which is nothing like the good old days.

I'm a Metal Gear Solid mega fan, and being part of the community, you notice so many self-proclaimed fans that like maybe 10-20% of the games and vehemently dislike the rest.

ngl having played BfA and the first half of Shadowlands in WoW before getting entirely burnt out, the stuff Jerma is talking about in D4 sounds eerily familiar to me and not in a good way. It makes sense because I remember hearing that lot of modern WoW's design takes massive inspiration from Diablo, especially D3, and I imagine it going the other way too. The whole bit of the more modern perfect percentages and systems not allowing interesting scenarios versus older designs that allowed for dumb decisions really stuck out to me, a lot of these more perfect systems end up just raising the bar of player expectations and makes the players themselves more perfectionist and less in it just for fun. The parallels between classic vs modern WoW and D2 vs D3/D4 are very strong and I guess that speaks to how Blizzard has changed over the years

    • @missbelled6700
      @missbelled6700 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm 100% convinced D4 was made by a team of ex-WoW devs and the rest was new blood. Even the quest design is basically just wow quests, way too much talking and clicking on levers and shit, not enough exploding demons. Even when you get told to kill stuff you're running around pulling mobs trying to get 20/20 diseased bear livers.
It's a top-down MMO in every way, but mostly the bad ones.
