As a straight male, this kind of thinking is annoying. I get where it's coming from but the only time a platonic relationship between a man and a woman is an issue is when either person makes it an issue. If you ask me, it's immature af to think that just because someone of the opposite sex is complimenting or rooting for you that they must be trying to make a move something.
Some of us dudes ain't out here chasing every girl that smiles at us. There's comfort in having a stable healthy friendship that's not sexual, and it gives more meaning to the girls that are sexual/significant relationships. Thinking that sex is the only motive of being friends with a woman is just thirsty - there's way more to life than that.
Most men will absolutely take it as flirting. I'll never forget complimenting a man on his cologne. He turned around and said thank you but immediately after asked for my number. He looked so shocked when I said no. Smh

I don't agree. I have had women and men who compliment my looks and wear. I didn't think they were flirting with me. I enjoy compliments from all genders, races and etc. However, I am not expecting anything from them either. It is women like you why men don't make compliments to women. Yet, there are women who have low self esteem or confidence because they don't get compliments from the opposite sex.

It's both tbh. I've received my fair share of compliments from women, and not every time do I assume they want me. You have to read the compliment and the body language. I can tell when a woman is giving me an innocent compliment and I can say thank you and move on. There wasn't a door left open intentionally. I can also tell when a woman is complimenting me just to leave that door open for me to walk through. Don't just assume, every time, that someone wants a further conversation. Give a compliment back and see where it goes.

I'm so torn. A part of me wants to question how much of a deft of compliments many men out here aren't getting that it makes them seemingly sprung if they get a positive note on their appearance. Yet, for some dudes, courting and dating is perplexing to them since they don't understand signs, signals, body language or anything subtle. So a compliment to them feel blatant and like a green light.
But, no matter how you slice it, it remains clear that communication skills are lacking.
I’m naturally friendly and love to uplift people so have always complimented the men in my life. Unfortunately they always took it the wrong way and tried to make a move. It’s sad that you guys can’t take a basic compliment without thinking a woman wants to be with you. Grow up for real.

My dad taught me to compliment men because they don't get them often. I might notice a haircut/shape up or just tell him he looks handsome today. While I appreciate him teaching me that, 90% of the time they think I'm hitting on them and I'm like ugh 🙄

Charla Cappin. I work in a facility with a bunch of people between the ages of 20-70. Married and unmarried. Single and dating. These 40 year old ninjas on the job be the horniest ones it really ain’t the 20 year olds. Women call me handsome from time to time and they like my cars so they talk to me in traffic but I just laugh, tell them thank you, I appreciate it, and keep it pushing to my destination. If she was that interested she'd ask more questions afterwards like do you have gf etc. 🤷🏾

Just because you compliment someone doesn't mean you are trying to holla or hit on someone, as long as you are respectful with your compliment. You can use that to try and do more but that is not what it means. Sometimes you just like something and are being nice.
The robbery situation aside, if a guy gets a compliment from a woman and uses that as a potential avenue to shoot his shot there’s nothing wrong with that. From there, if she says yes then great and if it’s a no then move on, but this is why dating is starting to seem more and more impossible. This is why we’re projected to be the most single and childless generation if nothing changes. You people that think like this are just making everything a problem, and if y’all don’t stop it’s gonna really be a problem when ppl become more lonely and depressed then ever. I have received many platonic compliments from coworkers. Nice haircut. Nice tie. That suit looks good on you. Just because someone gives you a complement. Does it mean they want to jump your bones. The thing is we as men often take a complement to mean something more than just a complement.
If you are satisfied with the relationship you have, and people don’t take a complement out of context then you should be safe in the dialogue of complementing that person if not, or you’re on the prowl down low or out to get someone in a relationship download then there is an issue

I think it depends on the type of man they’re complimenting. If women see this particular guy on a regular basis and noticed he be working hard upon himself, that’ll attract them and eventually those “compliments” convert into flirting.
When I was like 20 I was at a gas station and seen this man that appeared to be in his late 20’s to mid 30’s with some nice locs walking out the gas station store towards his car. I said “I like your dreads” he said “oh yeah, what you like about em😏” I thought he thought I was trynna holla at him which I def was not. Just had really nice hair and I had wanted locs since 10th grade so I was impressed wit how healthy his hair looked…didn’t stop me from telling ppl when I like their shoes, shirt, hair, car or whatever but idk y’all be weird🥴. Take it for it is and keep it moving

Compliments are often used as ice breakers to start a conversation with someone to gauge interest. That's a nice shirt vs That shirt looks good on you. Both can be just be a compliment, yet one leans towards flirting. Until mind reading is invented social cues will remain a grey area.

It is dependent on the giver and receiver. Complements can be platonic and they can be flirtatious. It can be the delivery and it can also be how it is received. I have given men compliments some have taken it as I intended just acknowledging their fit or smile etc, some have taken it as I’m interested in them. It hasn’t stopped me from doing it.
