In March 1990, sixteen-year-old Siddhartha was forced to flee his home in Safa Kadal, Srinagar, Kashmir. The days leading up to their departure were filled with fear and horror for the Gigoos, as they witnessed friends and neighbors being killed outside their homes. With the threat of being next, they faced the difficult decision to leave, even though they wished to stay. Siddhartha believed his departure would be temporary and that he would soon return home, unaware that his fate was sealed. What followed was a long, dark period of camp existence and a struggle for survival.
