It was around 21.30 Hrs when the lounge window Next to my left arm loudly crunched, then the curtain started to move inwards. The windows were shut ! I pushed back and had a shove of war with whoever and shouted some very loud and rude expletives. There was a "Uugh !" from a voice and it all stopped. the window was hanging out of its frame. When I looked outside there was no one. I reported this to the Police, who gave me a crime reference number. Two hours later they told me they had cancelled it because there was little likeleyhood of catching anyone. My next door neighbour was not in. He lost two TV's, his wife's jewellery and some gold ! Again he was told the same as myself. If you want to be a burglar, then you have a relatively easy way of making money because of the lack lustre approach by the Police who couldn't care less !!! Totally agree, the UK of the eighties is nothing more than a distant memory, the likes never to be seen again. We have two situations now, people who don't want to leave this country moving to the countryside, those who have totally had enough, moving abroad. Eventually, even these escape routes will be a thing of the past, as areas that are still worth moving to will be swallowed up and engulfed in crime. The attitude by those in authority, seem to have already decided that it's too late for action. Good luck with your move abroad.

Then I saw my adoptive country ruined by exactly the same tactics used in the UK: uncontrolled immigration, no-go zones, and a drop in 'feeling safe' in the big cities, at least. You NEED to STAY and FIGHT if you want to believe in your country. I came home partially because I couldn't see anywhere else in Europe being better.

Very nerdy response - that's game theory, you will always get some people playing the system. Often asked myself when I'd become adult, we have to make a choice or compromise - accept some crime for some freedom, no crime for no freedom, or anarchy. Most places go for the first option, but "some" and "some" and the proportion between them is difficult. It will never please anybody.

I'm now in my mid 60's and have witnessed the cataclysmic decline of the nation, of which I was once so proud. This week we have the Farmers taking their tractors to London, if everyone got off their bottom and went along as well to support this March it could make the difference. From the comments I see people who are staying in Britain are hoping things will come right . I have watched from afar how since Tony Blair started the destruction of Britain. I to left Britain 52 years ago , every visit I have made in those years back to see family, the crumbling of Towns , villages have occurred. Council’s have done nothing to help save communities and infrastructure in fact they to have destroyed their own communities. Yes Britain was a great place to live back in the sixties, seventies and eighties but doom and gloom now surrounds the whole country. I say to any young people with children get out and do your research, find a Country that respects its citizens.

I agree with what you say and of course I don't know what life is actually like in St. Albans, but from what you showed it looks at least like there is some social cohesion, and/or council taking care of the place; this is a stark contrast to most of London where I live, you see litter strewn everywhere, not just food packaging etc but mattresses and those horrible cheap divan bed bases dumped all over the place, I've even seen a mattress dumped just inside the gates of my local park. St. Albans looks more like the market town in the Midlands, not far from the Welsh border, where I was born and still have family in the region. It's 98.5% homogenous in terms of demographics, and in elections there Reform got 3x as many votes as Labour. Also from reading local newspapers it's very calm there. The last news report from the village my cousins live is from about 3 months ago, an unknown Range Rover drove around the village, and this was reported to police.
I will be moving to the small market town there soon, I can rent a small flat, pay council tax and bills, for the same as or less than I pay for a room in a crappy shared flat with no living room, in a crappy part of London.
