I did my junior project here like 9 years ago. Used to visit the elephants a lot when there, such majestic creatures. Hate to hear it but Oakland is no place for them. Rip Lisa.

Lisa the elephant did not "call the Oakland zoo home." She was imprisoned there after being kidnapped from her native habitat. Elephants are not native to North America, and they sure as heck didn't come over from Asia or African of their own volition.

As a kid in the 60's my family dutifully to the S.F. zoo. Quite often. I remember well the crappy concrete enclosures the animals were jailed in. In the fullness of life I regret they were their for my childhood entertainment. Large animals need large spaces. Please don't acquire more elephants Oakland.

Yes, “large animals need large spaces”, but the thing you animal-justice warriors don’t understand is human development is causing a lot of these animal’s natural habitats to disappear at an alarming rate in “the wild”.
Every year elephants in Africa and Asia raid people’s crops in sheer desperation, thus leading to violent conflicts and fatalities on *both* sides.
You bleeding-hearts see an animal in a “prison”; people that have no choice but to live with them in their “natural habitats” see them as very big, and potentially very dangerous, nuisances and will gladly see them as either extinct completely or in captivity where a lot of people, who just want the absolute best life for them as much as possible despite the fact that they’ll never be in that magical and wholesome place that is “the wild”, but truly understand the various complexities that come with real conservation despite the fact that we have keyboard warriors like yourself that will probably never quite understand how local people view these *dangerous* wild animals to begin with.
Don’t like elephants in captivity? Fine, but at this rate you might just have to accept elephant trophy hunting.

@@iamgoddesslyl I’d feel safer walking in a pit full of rattlesnakes than walking the streets of Oakland. Just saying.

I visited that zoo 20 years ago and only remember how desperately sad the primates looked and how small all their enclosures were. It was such a pitiful looking zoo. I do hope they close and the animals can go to a better place, those poor animals.

Keeping elephants in cold Oakland at the small zoo is inhumane so hopefully they will stop acquiring elephants.

that zoo needs to close. It's a prison for animals that need to be home with space. It's just a big outdoor cage and inhumane.

Same as putting your cat and dog down, sometimes.
Why? is it because it’s an elephant?

On other news, try the new elephant burgers at the zoo's cafeteria.

Arthritis caused by the cold in Oakland. These are African elephants that should live in Africa for almost 70 years. The zoo should be "let go", or remodified to a botanical garden.
