On TV: Leonard Warren - On the Road to Mandalay - 1949

  • Many of us have already seen the other semi-staged (stagey?) version of Warren singing this song-the one with a small chorus, where he's filmed mostly from a wide shot. It's nice to see just how expressive his face is on these energetic pieces.
    .....................................
This channel is primarily about vocal emission-aural examples of basically correct singing, correct impostazione-chiaroscuro, vowel clarity, firm and centered pitch, correct vibrato action, absence of throatiness or thickness, sounds free from constriction and from the acoustic noise that accompanies it-with occasional video examples that demonstrate what the body, face, mouth, jaw, and tongue look like when used with correct impostazione-the vocal emission of the one and only Italian school.
Caveat: I'm biased in favor of baritones and baritone literature, but if you want to learn about and listen to all the greatest singers in the old-school tradition, explore this spreadsheet (voice parts are separated by tabs): bit.ly/2W4qmE3

probably the hottest take in opera but I honestly believe he was a big tenor, the tongue tension is constantly present as well. He had an unusually high speaking voice too.

I’ve thought exactly the same thing, for those same reasons, for years.

Yes he initially trained as a dramatic tenor. He could sing Di Quella Pira, complete with interpolated high C.

Fantastic. Listen to how steady his sound is and the vibrato is close and doesn't interfere with the pitch in any way. Perfect.

One of the great ˋold chestnuts ´that one seldom hears anymore. I must drag it out again sometime. I still have all the notes.
Warren really sells the piece & the posting here is much appreciated.

Of course Warren sings this old chestnut with a wealth of voice that no other baritone, not even Tibbett or JC Thomas, can muster. However, with regard to correctness of style, it is Fraser Gange (on YT), the Scottish baritone of the early 20th century, who offers the most brilliant and artistic performance of this piece.

I’d agree. Warren’s voice was not always picked up well with technology of the era. Takes nothing from him, however. Superb voice and artist.
