- This video demonstrates how you can make your own acid flux for soldering sheet metal, and magnetic stainless steel. This WILL NOT work on non-magnetic, or slightly magnetic stainless steel. Flux can be made using household items.

I had tried other flux while soldering some copper wires but it didn't work but guess what, this acid flux worked. amazing 💯
I just used this to solder copper to stainless steel. It worked like a champ!!! The only change I made was to put it in a glass mason jar, and add half of the zinc at a time with no worries about heat. I used about one cup of acid and (2) old D batteries.

The gas that bubbles out is hydrogen if you can find a way to connect the bottle to a deflated inner tube while adding acid gradually to a jar of zinc, you'll be able to produce the fuel necessary for soldering 😉
Very Interesting, I believe Muriatic Acid + Zinc = Zinc Chloride + Hydrogen Gas.
And from the interwebs "Zinc Chloride is usually found in conjunction with ammonium chloride and a small amount of wetting agent when compounded into a flux.
Both zinc chloride and ammonium chloride are excellent reducing agents and clean metal very efficiently in the temperature range necessary for soldering."

Good morning, I'm from Brazil, this type of flux is used to solder brass, musical instruments, saxophone, trumpet, and then if I spray water with bicarbonate to eliminate the effect of the acid, would it work?
For me it's much easier to use a Dremel-type small grinder with a cut-off wheel to cut off the bottom of the battery, and then cut the cylinder vertically. This allows me to peel the zinc off the black insides of the battery easily and stretch it flat, making cleaning it a breeze.
Also worth mentioning, that the carbon rods are good for spot welding (can be sharpened using a good pencil sharpener...) and as electrodes for electroplating and other electrolysis experiments.

Great Video, thanks. I put 3 oz. of Muriatic Acid, and used a new C cell Heavy Duty Battery. The zinc was perfectly clean. The Muriatic Acid dissolved all but a small portion of the zinc as it stopped bubbling. I then used a coffee filter to clean the solution.

Muriatic acid + any galvanized piece of metal will do the trick. I am soldering stainless for 27 years as part of my job.
francis sanchez That is true because anything galvanized already has a coating of zinc. :-). Using the acid with the zinc, won't hurt.

Could you please explain “any galvanized piece of metal”? Galvanized metal is mostly lead coated steel. Is it the lead or steel

Interesting, never soldered to stainless steel before but if magnetic qualities are required for it to work any 3XX series (austenitic) should work. However hot forged austenitic is not magnetizable without cold working of the metal. Bending a piece of tube, or hammering a cold plate will work and bring out its paramagnetic properties.
EgadsNo It works, but you need that surface SUPER clean, and you have to use the acid flux.
EgadsNo Magnetic properties are redundant in the process of soldering. While you are educated and know some big words related to metals not described in this video ask yourself what the magnetic properties of copper, brass, aluminum, lead, gold etc. the more commonly soldered metals are. Simple people weld these materials all day long without big words and don't exacerbate their own stupidity the way you have.

How much Zink must be put into how much Muriatic Acid to get a good flux ? By weight or by volume?

Hi Jake. It doesn't take much. Dissolve a small small amount to prevent excessive heating. Just be sure to wear gloves, eye protection, and have water/baking soda nearby in case the acid gets on your skin.

Never tried it. Battery acid is sulfuric acid. Use hydrochloric/muriatic acid.
why rosin flux did't work like this acid flux?

Does not have to be exact, just dissolve a fair amount into the acid.
Now this flux works well for magnetic stainless steel, what about non magnetic or slightly magnetic stainless steel?

@@electronicsNmore Our mechanic here is an expert at making stainless steel (non magnetic) sewing folders for our industrial machines. We are using him and his skills on making our cutting table. These folders can be seen (cheaply/poorly made) on that famous auction site....he does a far better job soldeirn it. We are making a 34 feet (just over 10 meters) cutting table. The top is stainless sheets 1.5mm thick. We took 4ftx8ft stainless sheets and then took angle iron with a piece of 3/4 and 1/2 marine plywood epoxied (glued and screwed together). Then ground down angle iron to same level as stainless sheet on top of marine plywood. All marine plywood is triple treated with various anti termite "stuff". Covered with 2part polyurethane. OK so now we are soldering this non magnetic stainless steel. Imagine the lengths of the joints.....lots and lots. There is a 50/50 solder stick here called "Nikolite". We take Eagle brand electrical soldering paste. He cleans the stainless then uses a technique of the electrical soldering paste with a small dab of muriatic. Solders great!!! When he takes a hand grinder with a sanding paper overlapping disc it becomes identical in appearance to the stainless. He also is doing this between the angle iron (5mm thick) and the stainless. He is using a 150 watt soldering iron. Lots and lots of patience but it is seamless. We will then take a buffing wheel and jeweler's rouge to buff it all out. No zinc here in the process. Just water, muriatic acid, electrical soldering paste and 150w (super large version of soldering iron) and it works soldering the seam between stainless and gap between stainless and angle iron. Of note this stainless sheet is tack welded with stainless rod (2.0mm) (using an inverter welder) about every 9 inches. When everything is sanded down it is a continuous seam looks identical to the non magnetic stainless steel. This is taking several days but we are talking a combined length of approximately 150 feet of soldered non magnetic stainless and on edges metal angle iron. This gent is doing an amazing job.....this is for our small jeans factory we are making.
Oh.....forgot to mention....don't worry we have the cutting machines on square D GFCI breakers :-) The obvious is with a stainless top and people on top of it working to cut material this is the only option.

You can also use electrolysis zincs from a boats hull/engine. You need a fair amount of zinc dissolved into the acid. Remember to add the zinc SLOWLY to the acid, otherwise the acid will get EXTREMELY hot(Hot enough to melt a plastic bottle!)

Yes. muriatic acid with some zinc dissolved in it. You must add the zinc slowly , otherwise you will generate incredible amounts of heat. You can use any source of zinc. Thank You.

When you are at the store buying ingredients to make this, walk over to plumbing and pick up some flux.
I aint got $20 for that ruby stuff but guess what I got, some acid and some used heavy-duty batteries that I was to throw away anyways. made my acid flux and was able to solder some copper wires easy.
