The reason the airfield at Katherine is so large for such a small settlement is that it is also a Royal Australian Air Force base, hosting 75 Sqn with F35 Lightning aircraft.

Rain in the red centre is pretty rare mate, you were very lucky - only sees water a few times a year. We had the same luck a few years ago - managed to see the Todd River flowing in Alice - it's dry 360 days a year - quite the sight.

Katherine Airport is also known as RAAF Base Tindal.
It is home to No 75 Squadron which is currently equipped with F-35A strike fighters, which have recently replaced the fleet of F/A-18 Hornets.
The aircraft parked at Alice Springs started to become a thing during Covid, it is more of a storage facility than a boneyard /scrapyard, a lot of aircraft originally stored have returned back to commercial service.
Yes Australia is more ‘greener’ that a lot of overseas people think, it’s not just one big desert with a bit of green around the edges.
Only about 18% of Australia is actual desert, adding areas of dry and arid regions brings the total of ‘desert/dry arid’ to a bit more than 30%, The rest of the landscape can vary from tropical rain forests to snow covered mountains in winter, and everything in between.
    Cheers,

I would have done this milk run; if for no other reason, it would have been a sentimental journey. I spent many hours on the Embraer 120's back in the 1990's. I think the last time was in 1997 between Beaumont Texas to Houston. It saved my buddy a 90 mile drive to IAH. I really miss the days of the turboprops in the US regional markets.

As an Australian the highlight of any visit to the NT is to check the NT News headlines!
I've done some work at Katherine airport which is also RAAF Tindal airbase, thus the size. There is a road that crosses the runway with a set of traffic lights on it controlled by the control tower. You are basically warned failure to comply with those lights is grounds for being kicked off the base, especially as a non military person!
Also the drive from Darwin to Katherine is interesting also, as there are all the old WWII era airstrips beside the road.

I flew out of Darwin on the day of joint maneuvers between th USAF and the RAAF. USAF F15s and F16s, and RAAF F18s; Ospreys; C130s and a C17. I wasn't bored waiting for my flight.

Northern parts of the NT only really have two seasons. Wet season from November to April and Dry season from May to October. You were flying during the wet season which explains why it was all so green, despite being really hot

I've flown that milk run several times - leaving early morning from Darwin via Alice on a E120/Metroliner/Fokker, down to Adelaide on a B738/Q400, then on to Melbourne on a B738, one more flight on an E190/Q400/B738 and home just before midnight eastern time. During the summer months with daylight savings it was the only way to get across the country in a day.
The last time i did it was with a burst eardrum which wasnt fun with that many altitude transitions.

All of the comments concerning your experiences traveling into and out of Katherine just made me crack up hysterically, much to the annoyance of my eleven year old daughter….Katherine!…who was sitting across from me as I was watching this, and giving me the stink eye each time I started laughing!…And began laughing again once you arrived in Adelaide, but my Guinea pig 🐹 , Adelaide, didn’t seem to care much!

I crisscrossed Australia 20 years ago this month. To cross the outback and the Red Centre, my itinerary included an Adelaide - Alice Springs hop on a QANTAS 737-838; I did a rerun trip from Alice Springs to Uluru on a QANTAS Link BAe-146; and took another QANTAS 737-838 from Alice Springs to Darwin.
