You can also use the R-Mg Br, to react with the epoxide, but I see that there is usually added CuBr2 or another Cu2+ salt, in some amount (at least 0.5 mol eq. I think), in the reactions I've seen published. I think it will also facilitate the reaction of R-Li with the epoxide, as well as making other C-C connecting reactions possible, as far as I can remember. I'd look up the use of Cu-salts in organometallic reactions, like Gilman reagents. (Eg. R²CuCl).
