    I have a 421 and a 6100, both of them will run all day with that characteristic "pop can full of gravel" sound from the muffler.
    PS: they're Dol-Kitas, but I call them Dolmars because fuck battery-powered Makita

    17 or 18 years ago I bought a house with a fireplace and woodstove and planned on heating with wood. I grew up with wood and electric heat. I started researching saws and kept coming back to the Dolmar 5100s, its specs were right there with the Husqvarna 346 and Stihl 260. Bought the 5100s and never looked back. I later bought a used Makita 6401 from the Home Depot rental dept and it is my "big" saw. I've ran my Dolmars next to guys with the big brands and they always want to check out my saws.

    IMO 7900 has the best ergonomics of any saw I’ve put in my hands. The wrap is big but extremely comfortable. Great all around saw👍🏻

    In southern IL in the '70s a local auto parts business sold these. Damned expensive back then. A 114 sold for $500! Thing was those would outcut anything around here. I rebuilt a 114 many years ago. Had to replace the crank assy, lower rod bearing gone. 1st fire up I was amazed how mean it sounded, so was everyone in the shop. Checked the rpms, it was turning 14500! This was when most saws turned around 11000-11500. I turned it down as much as possible. It's still doing it's job 30 or so years later. Worst thing about 'em was the lack of dealers & parts. Some of the biggest 1s should've had wheels as an option.

    I grew up country broke in the woods, and growing up I only had access to the worst saws. Plastic Craftsman and green Poulan. My first name brand saw was a Husqy, and my heart belongs to them. I built a sizable collection of Husq over the years, and then I got my first Dolmars. Got a 120SI and a 143 for $250 and those saws blew my mind. A 73CC Dolmar gave my 372s a serious run, and the build was better. I bought a 100 Super at a yard sale for $25. I bought a 114 on Craigslist for $100. Every one of them runs, and runs well. 4 World Class saws for $375 and I have a hard time lately giving my Husqys much attention. Dolmar/Solo/Makita are probably the greatest chainsaws in History, and I don’t think I’m being dramatic.

    I'm in an area the dealers really only sell Stil. TSC sells Huscvarna. I found a Dolmar 115i in the trash a couple years back to a tank of fresh fuel, but missing it's spark plug. I'm guessing some guy wanted a new saw, so removed the sparkplug to prove to the wife it was dead. I put a spark plug into it, and it started on the tank of fuel I found it with. I've got a Homelight 5-20 out in the garage, which hasn't seen regular use since the 1970's; but it was running in the early 2k's when I got it when my grandparents moved. From what I'm told it had issues when parked, and still had therm when I got it running, as it'd stall under a slight load. As it's a gear drive saw, with no clutch; I haven't spent much time into getting it running right as gear drive is scary, as there is no clutch to absorb any overload so binding and kicking are normal.

    I always like the older Dolmar chainsaws. It to bad they never really took off here in the US. Even here in the PNW where there was a lot of oddball chainsaws in the old days, they were never common. The parts seemed like they were always hard to come by.

  • @douglasengle2704
    @douglasengle2704 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for the talk and display of Dolmar chainsaws! In the early 1990s I was very involved with volunteer trail work and highly reliable highly performing chainsaws were at the top of my most have list. Shihl was my first highly desirable brand way over Homelite and McCulloch chainsaws by far. Then I saw a display of Dolmar Sachs chainsaws with the chainsaws all stuck into a pretend standing tree in a showroom in Warrenton VA and all the Dolmar prices were over $1,000! The Dolmar chainsaws looked sleeker then the Stihl chainsaws and from the Dolmar display it appeared that Dolmar only made a professional line of chainsaws priced more than Stihl. If somebody would ofd given me a Dolmar I would have been concerned about getting parts for it, but I would of found a way! I don't think there is really room in the USA for Dolmar in the 1990s when it was seen and likely is very close to Shihl in culture, but higher in price. It maybe a slightly better saw than Sthih. I don''t really know. Especially for hiking trail work where every pound counts as you carry the saw up a mountain on a shoulder strap the Dolmar was seriously attractive for trail work. It also really pumps up the other trail volunteers to have a high performance highly reliable chainsaw backing them up! Brand choice a side, high reliability comes chiefly from the person field caring for the chainsaw.

    • @UserRandJ
      @UserRandJ ปีที่แล้ว

      Most Stihl owners I've seen struggling to start them. The thing about the Dolmars was they just do what you need them to do- and that makes them a treasure. They have a very sweet engine, no bs. And the hardware matched the engine.
      It would be nice if this world was doing things this way- but no, everything is junk now. I saw a guy trying to mow his corner block with a battery mower- a stihl one, he had to keep stopping to unclog the grass, and he also had to keep stopping to pull the battery to reset the over temp cut out. Then he dragged the thing into the garage and had not even finished half of the job. His grass was about 4 inches long that he was mowing. It was out of its league. They want to save the planet with batteries, yet it's still okay to have horse racing and all the transport, plus breeding and food production. Good times
      Jake

    In the '70s a local company sold the 114s for $500. Didn't sell good at that price but they'd outcut anything then. Thing was most would run so fast (14000) it would destroy crank/rod bearing. I overhauled 1 35 years ago for a friend & he's still using it.

    Just snagged an EA6100P lightly used as a Home Depot Rental. Paid $315. I'm not a pro, but this was one of my dream saws for occasional home use...and I couldn't believe that Home Depot Rental was selling a used newer model EA6100P. Asked the guyt to start it up for me, it took 2 pulls to burp on choke, and then single pull to start, followed by all single pull starts (like 5 in a row just to test). Had a new carb installed, and came with 20" bar and chain. Guy threw in an additional brand new 20" chain. All in all, I think it was a steal...
    PS: even though I personally don't really have a use for anything bigger...I really want either a DCS 6421/7300/7900, or a newer EA7300/7900. Just to have since Dolmar is getting killed off by Makita.

    • @CaliforniaCarpenter7
      @CaliforniaCarpenter7 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      TH-cam won’t let me send an eBay link, but there are German ignitions for the 117 on there right now, and also less expensive aftermarket options. Just search “Dolmar 117 ignition coil” and they’ll pop up. You probably already know this, but make sure to visually match your old ignition to the picture of the new one. I made the mistake once of buying the wrong ignition for an old 394. Hope you get the old saw up and running!

    I’ve got a Sachs Dolmar 111 I bought moons ago and love. Now that I am older I wanted a light trim saw and bought a 35 about five -seven years ago. I love that saw like my first born. I went to buy a second one this week and found out about the Makita deal. I did find a 35 new old stock just like mine (no easy adjust gizmo) that I am going to buy and put on the shelf. The farm can be a hard place for saws and I want to be prepared. Easily better saws than my Efco, Stihls, Homelite Super XL’s and steel case Craftsman’s.

    I have a 116. My favorite saw ever! Its almost 40 years old. They used to cut graphite electrodes with it at the plant my father worked. Ive been cutting wood with it for close to 15 years. It finally stopped working literally last week. Cant find an ignition coil for it. Help anyone?

    I have (West Germany vintage) Sachs Dolmar 117. I ran it last fall and it worked well, I would have sworn I drained/stored it properly for off season (like I did for my SD 120 and my Husq Rancher 55) but when I tried to fire it today it refused to run. I found some syrup like fuel in the tank. I flushed tank several times and replaced filter, but still would not run. I think either the fuel intake line and/or the carb is blocked w/the goop. I briefly attempted to remove carb, and intake fuel line, but it wasn't obvious. What appear to be the mounting (allen) screws to the cylinder head, seem to be partially obscured by the carb body, or really hard to access. Please if anyone has insight on removing carb, and accessing the intake fuel hose, I'd appreciate the tip(s). Thanks
