Hi Luke, thought I would add some stuff that may help! You will have trouble getting them to fruit unless you let the ends hang back down (the reason they are grown up a pole commercially). I made concrete posts but you could try using a 100mm reinforced PVC burlap covered pipe in a large pot/half barrel if you wanted to get fruit. Would love to see it and hope you give something like that a go with yours :) Be cautious of the weight of a mature vine, it would have to be a pretttttty heavy duty tomato cage, I really suggest going much more heavy duty (they weigh a LOT). Pollination is done successfully by bees and moths etc but some cultivars are not self fertile (meaning you need more than one variety). They also flower over an extended period, that one night flowering thing is a myth. Hope that helps and all the best with your dragon fruit!
The one night flowing thing depends on the variety. There are multiple flowers obviously that bloom in different nights, but each flower only opens one night in those varieties.
Bought 8 blueberry plants 20 strawberry rhizomes and several other fruit trees Bc of your channel my hobbies consisted of working out and hunting and fishing now I am in the garden weekly
Thank you for all your helpful information! Ignore the comments from those who feel a false sense of superiority. We all understand there are so many variables to consider when nurturing any plant / cactus / etc. and it makes sense that beginners use multiple resources for information. Nobody has been given absolute authority on this topic and having to read their ego boost comments is exhausting. Your information if valuable and keep doing exactly what you're doing.
I've been looking for a video by you on growing garlic and ginger in a container. If you haven't done one then I'm sure many of us would appreciate your taking the time to put one together. Thanks
I bought a small dragon fruit plant last weekend because it was so cute. Now I've been learning about it -- these puppies get BIG! I'm excited to watch it grow!
Perfect timing for this growing guide because I just received the dragonfruit seeds I bought from your store!! I've never grown dragonfruit before, but I figured it would like our hot, dry CA weather. As always, I appreciate the growing advice and I can't wait to harvest my own dragonfruit!
I've been looking for guide and tips about gardening I was so lucky to found your channel, I've just bought dragon fruit cuttings, and planted one, in a seedling bag, I really need this , thanks so much!🙏
Outline time! Dragon Fruit Soil: 70% sand & 30% potting mix Watering: Once a month Fertilizer: Balance Nitrogen phosphorus potassium(Trifecta Plus); Tablespoon a year (Non Fruiting size); Three Tablespoons a year (Fruiting Size) Temperature: Above 70 Degrees (Farenheit) - 100/105 Degrees (Farenheit) Size: Gets up to 3-5 ft tall Care: Support - Wood skewers while small; tall tomato cage when bigger. Breakage - Set broken off pad in soil Flowering/Fruiting: Flowers 1 night a year starting at about 3-3 ½ years old; hand pollinate during this. 2-3 Flowers when first fruiting Thorns are tough, but very few & obvious.
So happy you did this video! I bought dragon fruit seeds from your store as one of my new things to try this year. Im in California, so I think it will grow well.
Live in Central (coastal) CA. Bought a dragonfruit for $10 off some guy. Kept it in a one-gallon black plastic pot, and set it atop the soil of old wine 1/2 barrel, on west side of house ( full sun 5-6 hours per day, with heat reflecting off med. blue painted house wall). Plant eventually rooted into 1/2 barrel and then started attaching itself to side of house (wood). Grew and grew. And grew. Some fertilizer (mainly Maxicrop kelp extract + some worm castings). Some neglect as far as watering goes. Plant is now about 15+ feet tall, growing up under/along eaves of house. This past summer (2021) it flowered for the first time (age five years) and produced two wonderfully delicious fruits. I guess this means I got a self-pollinator . . .
You aren't kidding about how easy they are. Here in Nicaragua they grow on our roofs (usually planted by birds). I have taken cuttings from the one on my roof and started them in a pot and they grow like crazy with just a little banana skin/coffee fertilizer, and definitely need support for the fruit. And here, ours are pollinated by the fruit bats at night. By the way, here we call it pitaya. Thanks for all your great videos.
My edgars babies have tripled in size in 5 weeks. I'm getting ready to repot. Will they be shocked if I go to big? I want to stake them and make sure they have enough room. Also, do you toss coffee grinds and whole banana peel into the pot before planting or do you puree it with water to make a liquid fert?
Excellent Luke! I saw that dragon fruit in the back on another growing guide and have been waiting for this! You hit all the main questions I had... my dragon fruit snapped in half about two weeks ago and wanted to be sure I could set it and regrow. Had no idea about the one night flowering deal, thanks for the info, mine are about 2 1/2 ft. tall, fast growing and really easy as you mention.
My lazy way of getting the segments to root is to just stick it in a bucket of about 1-2 inches of water and wait a month or more - make sure to refill the water once in a while (not let it completely evaporate - which I have done) and it will easily root. Don't put it in direct sun during this time. Heck, you could put it in a dark closet and it will still root. Thanks for the growing tips.
It's about 6-8 years till fruit from seeds(in indoor conditions like ours in mi), you can get a "ready to fruit" sized one for about $50 average. You also have to hang them downwards to enhance flowering and fruiting conditions. Dragonfruit are a more tropical cactus variety so they can handle more organic percentage in their soil than 70% sand. You can tell when cacti need watering when their ribs get shrunken(like a compressed accordian) and the cactus is less plump. Once a month watering is a bad misconception to spread, every grower has different conditions, so you really have to find what's best for you. Luke your videos are seen by alot of people, I just wish that you would wait till you have succeeded with your projects before you posted vids with loose facts like this, it can very misleading for new growers. There are much better growing guides out there on plants like this by people that have dedicated years to growing them, with success. The more seasoned tropical growers get over shaddowed by videos like this. Please atleast inform your viewers of this before hastily presenting your small scale experiments. Maybe atleast name your videos different like "how I care for dragon fruit plants indoors" not hinting that you have a COMPLETE growing guide with little proof to anyone but a someone that has next to no info on dragon fruit.
Vinnie Lindholm yeah, I just came from a video of a successful dragon fruit owner who said to water them 2 times a week in the summer and once a week in the winter. *shrugs*
get off your high horse! He's doing fine and most beginners who are "dedicated" refer to multiple resources and understand there are many variables that need to be considered. Luke's videos are extremely helpful and nobody wants to see negative comments in an attempt to slap him on the wrist because someone feels the need to feed their ego.
Loved the video! I accidentally killed my dragon fruit a while ago, which shows just what a disaster I am if I can’t keep a plant like that alive lol. But I think I’m ready to try again this year :-D
My father in law tore the cement out of his garage floor, and added windows. He now has dragonfruit and pineapple bushes and even a banana tree growing in his garage floor! Pretty crazy but very very fun.
Do you have a video on what you plant, and when? If not, could you? I’m moving back to Michigan in May and I have never had a garden before, I want to start in May, but moving is difficult and unforeseen events could happen. What’s the last eat I can plant spring vegetables? Which veggies would you recommend for late May/ early June ( if any). Love all the work you do, I know it’s important to be able to feed yourself and your family. Thanks again
I would suggest, getting plants from a big box store this time to see if you really like gardening. And start fresh next year with new veggie seeds once you settle.
Could you do a episode on berry bushes? I just planted my seeds for raspberries blueberries goji berries and blackberries and since they take so long to actually produce and germinate I wanna get these ones right 😂
Why bother with the seeds when the canes are so easy to come by? And cheap too. You can buy them bare root right now for 5-7 dollars at the big box store. Its definitely not worth it to grow from seed unless you are growing a very rare variety.
Hi, I have been growing a dragon fruit cactus for about 6yrs from seed and no luck with flowering. I think my pot is too small, what size pot would you recommend? The plant is about 2 to 3ft. It is going crazy producing multiple leaders from the base, very hard to keep it to one central leader!
Nice video, thank you. I have 5 dragon fruit cacti I started from seed last summer. I have transplanted them 2 times and I did't see any roots on them when I did it, only like a very very small taproot, almost like a bump. The cacti are growing though, is this normal?
Thanks a lot for the great information. honestly I am planning to plant some indoor with lamp inside the apartment. I do have some small dragon fruit stems which I planted them a year ago and now I think they need to be re potted. a question I have is about flowering which you mentioned in your video. How do I know that the dragon fruit seed I planted are male or female ? Actually fruit process is very unclear for me. I appreciate your help in this regard
i have a purple haze growing and i just orderd a yellow dragon fruit cutting the purple haze didnt grow well originaly becuase i didnt have a strong enough grow light i think si i trimmed it all the way back down and hopfully this time it will grow better i am gonna try and cross polonate purple haze and the yellow dragon fruit if i get lucky and they manage to flower at the same time if they flower sense i cant do outdoor here the summers are to cold so it stays inside under a 500 watt full spectrum grow light all the time for about 12 hours a day sense i have it on a timer as its in my bedroom and i cannot sleep with a light as bright as the sun in my eyes
What lights would you use if you wanted to grow this indoors. I am in the mitten, but LOVE the fruit and want to grow a couple in my basement. Do you have any suggestions for me?
So you take the soil and sand and just mix it all together or do put sand in the bottom and soil then on top? What's the actual mixture? I'd definitely like to grow these.
I just thought of a good idea for trellises I thought of it for this but it could be use really for anything I guess… You could get a tree branch and stick it in the middle of the pot so that the dragon fruit vine growS up thatInstead of wooden stakes or any kind of trellis you might have to buy or build!
You left out the most important thing about indoor growing what’s the light cycle im thinkin about growing these but need to know if I can run it 24 indoor with my other plants or does it need it’s own environment
Hi there! I have had dragonfruit seedlings for a couple of years, i kind of abandoned them and left them in standing water, they are still growing pretty good. They’re tropical cacti so they can handle a lot of water, but I still haven’t seen a fruit :(
That cactus looks like a common cactus you can buy. My mother has had one of these, or one like it off and on for years. I don't think I've ever seen it blossom. I am sure she never staked it. Is it a common cactus easily bought at any garden department?
yup, the ones with the pink, yellow, orange round tops grafted on top. you can pop the round top off it won't survive then grow the "stem" which is the dragon fruit cacti
Marvlarv yes! I almost bought one at the store but decided not to after it stabbed me like 6 different times on the way to the cash. Those things are hard to get out without breaking
My dragon fruit lived outside in calif flowered all the time. I had about 10 to 12 flowers on my plant but never had fruit. The flower would stay about a week.
My dragon fruit has never had fruit. This year I decided it will be different. I root 4 new plant from the orginal plant to try something new. I am going to put a few in the ground and see what happens. A one time it covered a whole wall on my patio.
Alberto Autún Either way will work. If started from seed it will be a while before you can harvest fruit. Usually the second year. When started with cuttings you may have fruit the first season depending on the age and health of your cuttings.
Are these the ones you started from seed in a previous video?? How old are those? Also you should know they have male and female pads only the flowers on the female pads will fruit. Male pads have four sides female have 3.
Never heard of this male/female pad thing. All dragon fruit flowers have both male and female reproductive organs and all flowers will set fruit if properly pollinated. The main issue with growing dragon fruit is whether your variety are self-pollinating or not. I have 4 different varieties that get hand pollinated with a paintbrush and I get at least 90% success rate.
@@soledaom8747 My main plants are about 15 yrs old now so the pads can be 2-3 ft each. I have them growing palm tree style so the trunk is 6ft tall and the branches cascading horizontally from the top are prob 6ft too. It can take anywhere from 1-7 yrs to get flowers depending on variety and whether you got your plant from seed or cutting. A cutting from a mature/flowering plant can flower in 1yr under ideal conditions. Plants grown from seed will take 2-7 years depending on variety. Dragonfruit plants want an established root system in place, as well as support for its main vine before it will flower. This means the main vine needs to grow thick and woody. The more you top the vine the faster this happens.
How old is that plant? I have a dragon fruit that I started over a year ago and she's not very big yet about 6 inches, with multiple pads from the center.
I think he said at about 3-5 years old and that you have to hand pollinate the flowers when they bloom overnight, in order to get them to fruit. Did yours ever fruit?
Can you comment on how much light do plant requires? If you grow it 100% indoors, will it continue to mature question mark. Can I plant this plant under a giant tree?
So uh, I have dragonfruit growing out of old soda cans and a water bottle, and they’ve kinda... well... attacked the windows near the shelf they’re on. One of them is about 5 feet in length/height if it were straightened, and I’m not sure how to move it to a better location. Also, I’m in Ohio, and our house is drafty. I’d like these plants to flower, but none of them have any trellacing other than the metal shelf I put their obscenely small growing containers on. I’ve also watered them far too much according to what you just taught me, and some of them have this white flaking sunburn-looking stuff on them. Am I killing my dragonfruit? I want to save them.
I mean... Mine haven't fruited just yet but 1: I'm pretty confident to say it fruits one night is misleading, it fruits when it's ready to put out another fruit, the flowers _bloom_ for one night and 2: I'm def confident they don't _just_ bloom during the night. Just wake up early. They flowers wilt quickly and bats often pollinate where applicable but the flowers are still there in the early hours when bees are staring to move around. They tend to have less pollen 'cuz well it's been in bloom for a few hours by the time most people wake up, but just don't sleep until 2pm or whatever and you're fine. That I know for sure, just look up sackboymahalo on here, you can watch the bees on his flowers. With respect friend you've def got that wrong, fear not and let the bees at it - but also do it yourself if you want to be sure that's still as true as with any plant You don't move it outside.? I would go so far take the position that they enjoy more sun enough to justify breaking one length - it grows so fast you might as well get the sun when you can, it'll grow enough to replace it as long as you don't drop it and completely tear all the roots from the thing; and ignoring that for what it's worth mine haven't broke so far and when I first got the cuttings I was moving them in and out as often as I could on warm spring days and when I brought them back in for winter, true enough they were quite heavy but even with that I still didn't break them. Nearly 4 feet of growth, about 2.5 inch diameter in one (Ohio) season, no way they'd have done that inside all year
yep, they root pretty easily. General suggestion is to let the pieces dry for a couple days till they callus over - then plant them. Make sure to keep the correct orientation and don't plant them upside down.
Dragonfruit seeds just arrived today. Wish me luck. Live in MT so I will need it.

Good info thank you. Also the yellow dragon fruit is self fertile and doesn't need hand polinating.

Awesome video, I bought one and was blown away how fragile they are ! Thanks for the knowledge !
I've been growing dragon fruit for years now. They have to be one of the easiest cacti I have ever grown!

Just started 5 from your seeds a few months ago and they are starting to grow fast! Thanks for the video!

Hi there! I have had dragonfruit seedlings for a couple of years, i kind of abandoned them and left them in standing water, they are still growing pretty good. They’re tropical cacti so they can handle a lot of water, but I still haven’t seen a fruit :(
It can take a long time using seedlings. You could get an adult cutting. Then graft them on the cutting...
hey MIgardener can you grow veg in the big bags that people buy to put their groceries in, instead of using plastic bags for the groceries?
That cactus looks like a common cactus you can buy. My mother has had one of these, or one like it off and on for years. I don't think I've ever seen it blossom. I am sure she never staked it. Is it a common cactus easily bought at any garden department?
yup, the ones with the pink, yellow, orange round tops grafted on top. you can pop the round top off it won't survive then grow the "stem" which is the dragon fruit cacti
@@Boomer8789 Thank you! I KNEW I had seen this plant at the garden center somewhere but couldn't remember where!
@@Boomer8789 Thank you! There it was, all the time. Whad'ya know!
Ive grown prickley pear cactus. Those have some nast fine needles.
I doubt it is dragon fruit. It is supposed to flower just 1 night
I think dragon fruit cacti are more of a rain forrest type of cactus. They like water
Please do a complete growing guide to fennel. There are very very few guides to fennel growing.
My dragon fruit has never had fruit. This year I decided it will be different. I root 4 new plant from the orginal plant to try something new. I am going to put a few in the ground and see what happens. A one time it covered a whole wall on my patio.
Did you pollinate the flowers?
You should make an updated dragonfruit video for the progress
How do I start them though? From a seed or a cutting?
Alberto Autún Either way will work. If started from seed it will be a while before you can harvest fruit. Usually the second year. When started with cuttings you may have fruit the first season depending on the age and health of your cuttings.
Where do you buy a dragon fruit plant?
I tried to grow dragon fruit in potting soil and it died. Now I know what I did wrong. Thank you very much.
Try again :-)
How do you know when it’s gonna flower? I mean checking it every night would be tough
I have done that. Until you recognize the flower size and shape...
I have been growing one since I germinated seeds in Feb 2012. It has been a house plant and probablt doesn't get enough sunlight to bloom.
It needs to grow upwards long enough for the tops to hang back down before you'll get blooms.
Can I cut a long stem in half or 3 pieces and grow them in pots, or I always need a complete step to grow?
Ya each section can be snipped and grown
Hey. Don't forget to get Almonds as well. :)
What type of grow lights are used?
Are these the ones you started from seed in a previous video?? How old are those?
Also you should know they have male and female pads only the flowers on the female pads will fruit. Male pads have four sides female have 3.
Never heard of this male/female pad thing. All dragon fruit flowers have both male and female reproductive organs and all flowers will set fruit if properly pollinated. The main issue with growing dragon fruit is whether your variety are self-pollinating or not. I have 4 different varieties that get hand pollinated with a paintbrush and I get at least 90% success rate.

How big are your Dragon fruit plants? Habe 1 About 3 Feet but newer flowered....
The more you top the vine the faster this happens.
eYeKeepsitReal thanks alot, I‘m Lucky to have my plant from a cutting so maybe with your Information it will flower in a few years
How old is that plant? I have a dragon fruit that I started over a year ago and she's not very big yet about 6 inches, with multiple pads from the center.
I have 3 dragon fruit plants from last spring. When can I expect them to fruit? They are about a year old now. How much longer before that happens?
I think he said at about 3-5 years old and that you have to hand pollinate the flowers when they bloom overnight, in order to get them to fruit. Did yours ever fruit?
@vivakatrob13 NO. I have them in the window. Next Year, I'll take them outside and now I know to hand pollinate them. Thanks!
Can you comment on how much light do plant requires? If you grow it 100% indoors, will it continue to mature question mark. Can I plant this plant under a giant tree?
You can plant this under a tree and it be will literally cling and climb up the tree. Once it starts to hang down it will fruit.
I’ve never had a dragon fruit plant. How do you start growing them? I’ve seen some piece of the cactus on sale on amazon would you start with that?
Yes, just stick them into ground (container)...
Luke, what's the secret to growing dragon fruit from seeds?
You should graft it ...
Do you ship seeds to canada?
With respect friend you've def got that wrong, fear not and let the bees at it - but also do it yourself if you want to be sure that's still as true as with any plant
You don't move it outside.? I would go so far take the position that they enjoy more sun enough to justify breaking one length - it grows so fast you might as well get the sun when you can, it'll grow enough to replace it as long as you don't drop it and completely tear all the roots from the thing; and ignoring that for what it's worth mine haven't broke so far and when I first got the cuttings I was moving them in and out as often as I could on warm spring days and when I brought them back in for winter, true enough they were quite heavy but even with that I still didn't break them. Nearly 4 feet of growth, about 2.5 inch diameter in one (Ohio) season, no way they'd have done that inside all year
do a video on prickly pear
Can you root the broken segments, like a chistmas cactus.
yep, they root pretty easily. General suggestion is to let the pieces dry for a couple days till they callus over - then plant them. Make sure to keep the correct orientation and don't plant them upside down.
