There are just a couple of things I disagree with you. First: if you look carefully, you will notice that it is actually Theo who stares out of the window the most. He is really looking forward for the outside revolution... but from his beautiful home. He is projected toward the outside word, but from a privileged starting point. That's the inherent contradiction, and marvellous complexity, of Theo's character. Also, there is no just 'friendship' between Theo and Matthew. Theo has been trying to seduce him since the very beginning. After they go running through the Museum of Louvre, Theo was almost kissing Matthew, after Isabelle did, but stopped after staring intensely at his eyes. All the little "revenge games" the twins were playing were not revenges at all. Each time, one of the two was forcing the other to do what they really wanted. It may look like Theo "punishes" Isabelle by forcing her to have sex with Matthew, but in reality Isabelle wanted to have sex with Matthew, so Theo found this complicated way to realise her desire. This also means that, the first time around, it was not like Isabelle wanted to humiliate Theo in front of Matthew: Theo wanted to masturbate in front of Matthew, and Isabelle just played the part. Towards the end, Theo is almost strangling Matthew, but he does it in a way which looks like he is almost kissing him, while he is, quite literally, "mounting" him. All and all, I think there are a lot of homoerotic feelings going on. The love triangle is more complex than it may look at a first, because Theo loves Matthew who loves Isabelle who loves her own brother, but, in the end, everybody end up loving everybody. However, Theo is a very dark person and he is probably conflicted about these feelings. Or probably he is just a masochist as well as a sadist. Theo really is the French and younger version of Ivan Karamazov: he's the most intelligent of the three, but his intelligence may get in the way of his own life. By contrast, Matthew, who was the shy and introvert movie buff, comes to accept these homoerotic feelings: when Theo is trying to strangling him, he is very passive, as if he didn't mind what was going on, in the end he kisses Theo, he says "I love you" to Theo, and so on. So, that's a nice evolution for the character of Matthew. It seems to me that, while Theo and Isabelle are lost in their "revolutionary intellectualism", which leads to violent and tragic outbursts, Matthew, once back to the US, would probably become a hippie of the 70s, with a fluid sexuality and believing in polyamorous relationships and free love. What is interesting, then, is that this movie shows how people who start from having the same wishes and ideas end up leading completely different lives.
What a great interpretation. However, I would like your insight on a few things- A)Why the twins rejects television despite their love for cinema B) The homoerotocism and incestuous relationship between the characters C)Theo's ravaging of thrash for food B D) The parents finding about the little menage E) Isabella's suicide attempt
I love this film so much, The Dreamers is one of my all time favourite films. I couldn't find "The Holy Innocents" by Gilbert Adair, but I bought the book "The Dreamers" also by Gilbert Adair, who btw wrote the script for the film. I really enjoyed your review and I love the black and white filter 😊
I find your review really good! but I was wondering if you could explain the scene where their parents enter their apartment and decided to walk away leaving them a cheque.. either they couldn't handle the situation or they're careless
If you want my 2 cents I'd say it's a few things. Firstly, it shows how spoilt the kids are, and a spoilt upbringing generally leads to people wanting to be children for their entire lives. Secondly, it might just be that the parents are overly understanding. Y'know, 'kids are kids, they do stupid shit' or something like that. Or, maybe they felt guilt at the fact that they seemed so disconnected from their children that they were kinda ashamed of the situation, perhaps they blamed themselves for how they turned out and tried to buy their way out of their mistake.
Just watched this movie yesterday and loved it. As for the review, bit lengthy but worth it.. I actually enjoyed that it was unedited for some reason:)
i know this is a lil late but ive just stumbled on your channel and find this cool. One thing though, can someone explain the significance of isa's dismissal of showing her room to matthew? Her room looks odd and out of placed comparing to the other rooms' aesthetics. The director might wanna point out her immaturity in someway (because of the blatant and obvious design such as the paperwalls, teddy bears etc.) but idk guys, i wanna hear it from you.
I agree with you, Isabella seems more dependent of Theo. She sleeps in his room and bangs on her walls to get to him. She was the one looking to Theo for permission to go on a date with Matthew but Theo from what we saw had no qualms about bringing in another girl to his room, they sounded like they were having a good time. Come to think of it, Theo has way more interactions with other people than his sister. At the initial protest Theo is seen interacting to other people and his sister is just chained to the gates.
I think she hesitate to show her room to Matthew because she is aware that this room isn't matching that strong side of her that she presents to Matthew in the first place. Spaces where she and Theo spend time with Matthew are messy or at least have some kind of artistic chaos in it. She doesn't want to be seen in the way that her clean, nice, childish room shows her but in the same time it's part of her that she can't throw away, her safe space.
It felt like more an ode to cinema. How engrossed both the twins and Matthew were - However, Matthews is the true honest kind and the twins were more obsessed and modelled their lives after the films. They dont consider that their actions in the real world have real consequences unlike cinema. The twins are just kids cosplaying life lol. I truly dont understand the incest between the siblings and the parents ignoring them being naked .
+The T.H.O. Movie Reviews Podcast This is the first video of yours I watched and from the start I've been getting this vibe of you that says your incredibly smart and professional. Subbed
Hahaha you think movie is about sex triangle and other shit you wrote in comments ,watch first 2 minutes of movie again and you will maybe Open your eyes ,movie is more deeper than sex triangle or something if you didn t understood movie it s hard to explain what the movie is about...also last scene when they split and why they split is very important scene which explain lots of that, and i must wrote that movie is work of genius and its very hard to understand it only lunatics and genius can,ps sorry for my bad English
when ı watched this show ı talk like this about movie .Even my eyebrows they up and down ın same music , in your music of eyebrows . İ see myself in you and its really weird
Lol u talk about this movie like its a fun coming of age film “they love each other and want to be friends” like its high school musical lol Its a deeply fucked up storyline about people giving in to dark desires and ignoring reality so hard that when it quite literally barges into the room, their little ecosystem collapses. These people are so extreme, I think they are more like a stand in for Some psychoanalytical ideas than that they are supposed to be real characters. I feel like you bullied yourself as an american film buff so much that you toon this european film at face value, which makes for a bit of a weird Reading ? These incestual twins are Told they wont grow up if they are so entangled, literally a freudian way of talking about over indulging in childhood nostalgia

I like this. Marvelous.
I want to contradict you on just one thing: In the book, Matthew dies during the riots in the end.

i think both of those reasons haha i didn't get at all what the director meant for that scene
