I still think you could've covered it, even if briefly mentioning it by name. He hit .394 117 games into his team's season. All the players you mentioned in the video fizzled late into the season starting around the 90-100 game mark. I can't recall anyone since Ted Williams who hit for that high of an average that late into the season.
You didnt have to go into detail about the strike. It really is a diss that you did not include the one batter that actually was the closest to get to .400. NO ONE talks about Nomar's 2000 season when talking about possible .400 seasons. He finished at .372 and yet you start your video talking about the.380 mark
You could make an entire video about Gwynn’s quest for .400. The strike shortened season was a heartbreaker, ending at .394, but of course not a full season. Had he hit over .400 in 94 there would forever be an asterisk beside it. However he hit .351 in 84, .353 in 96, .358 in 93, .368 in 95, .370 in 87 and .372 in 97. It seems at least one of those seasons could have been covered. He was still at .402 on July 15th in 97 before falling below .400 yet hovering close to it for much of the rest of that season.

I want to talk about Todd Helton in 2000. As far as I know, Helton is the only guy since Williams to have pulled off a .400 average with enough PA to qualify for the full-season title. Let me explain: Entering play on August 21, 2000, Helton had 176 hits in 442 AB -- a .398 average. Helton did the following in his first three ABs that day: - Single in the 1st - Lineout in the 4th - Single in the 6th As of that moment, Helton had 532 PA on the season. That's enough to full-season qualify for the batting title. He had 178 hits in 445 AB. That's a batting average of precisely .400. Helton finished the game by striking out in the 8th, and grounding out in the 9th. Thus he ended the day under .400, and he wasn't able to get back. Still: if he had quit playing for the season after that 6th inning single, he would have had a qualifying .400 BA season.
The ‘94 strike robbed us of possibly seeing the Expos in the World Series, but it robbed us of seeing the best hitter since Ted Williams hit .400. I’m talking about Tony Gwynn. I think he had a great shot of doing it. The only hitters to come close to Gwynn since has been Ichiro and Cabrera.
Loved Gwynn, but the strike shortened season stopped me from watching for years and I disliked the McGuire/Sosa battle later. My White Sox were in first.
I think what really makes .400 extremely difficult besides dealing with like a million pitchers now is the media. The moment you're in that .400 conversation, the sports media will follow you inch by inch breathing down your neck and the pressure just continues to mount more and more. So it's impossible to just focus on the achievement when you have like a 360 angle of cameras following your every move.
I thought maybe Keith Hernandez run would have been in this. People forget about him since he was in between Brett and Carew. Also, Gwynn's .394 season

How’s it a “gut punch?” Because he became a right-wing pudnit? I tuned in to him during the Royals’ WS run occasionally to hear gems about having covered the team. He was such an extreme “journalist” I’m not sure people like Limbaugh believe their own words. Like Skip Bayless in the sports world, they’re extreme & contrarian for the sake of being exactly that. However you feel about his politics, he had some great takes on baseball and fascinating tales about the Royals.

john Olerud is one of the most underrated players of the 1990s. he hit doubles had a great average and could it the 20 HR mark. he was even a gold glove level defender
It matters but it's a bit overrated since it doesnt include walks, sacrifices, hbp, and lumps homeruns in with singles. Youd much rather have ohtani hitting than arraez since every statistical measure ohtani drives more runs and creates more runs than any other player in the league right now.
The fact that he left out Tony Gwynn who had the highest batting average since Ted Williams 407 season makes me concerned. Tony Gwynn played through the steroid ERA with pitchers who were taking steroids and he still batted 394.
Probably because that season wasn't a full season & can't be properly compared. If someone hit .400 in the 60 game 2020 season you wouldn't think that it's as special as the possibility of Arraez hitting .400 this year

Batting .400 is kinda like digging out all the dirt in a level of dig dug. Its neither the objective of the game or the best way of accomplishing the objective, but its hard enough and takes enough skill that its more impressive than just winning the level by playing perfectly

With the 56 games remaining he has never hit anywhere close to that in any 56 game stretch during his career and it would be extremely improbable for him to do so. If he gets more than 607 AB then he needs a lower than .433 average to get .400. If he gets fewer ABs then he needs a higher than .433 average to get .400.
Batting average, a counting stat divided by a counting stat, is beautiful in a way that BABIP, FIP, WRC+, OPS+, and OAA aren't, even if it's a century and a half old measure of someone's rate of success. It's not about how hard or far you hit the ball, the home field you play in, how likely it was for the ball you hit to become a hit and why that should matter, or the amount of standard deviations between you and the "average". It's about consistently getting positive results for your team over a prolonging period of chances to produce, and like all stats, it has its flaws and fluctuations, its uses and predictability. Whether the threshold or number for "average", "good", "legendary" means anything to you or the batter, to someone, it means keeping your head up for an entire year, no matter the fanfare or perceived luck and exploitation, and doing what some believe is impossible in this era. Numbers can spell a story, a feeling, or an incredible culmination of effort in a way that music and words can only occasionally hold a candle to.
As a former San Diego resident I do not understand why you left Tony Gwynn off the video. That is reprehensible..because...Tony Gwynn hit .402 over a 162-game period ending in 1995. From July 27th 1993 through May 13, 1995, Gwynn appeared in 162 games, and had 704 plate appearances. He had 624 at-bats with 251 hits (.402 BA), as well as 15 HR, 100 RBI, 121 runs scored, a .457 OBP and a .563 SLG.

Brandon Marsh has a .401 BAbip, which is perhaps more impressive. OBP is a far more important stat. The only player in the last 75 seasons to finish with a .500+ OBP was Barry, who did it four times.
The AL shortstop position in the late 90’s/early 2000s was ridiculous. Jeter, A-Rod, Miguel Tejada,, Omar Vizquel… y’all can let me know who I missed. And the crazy thing is that peak Nomar may have been the best of them. Undoubtedly his body had other ideas. Which is too bad cuz he could have potentially been an all time great.
He started to fall off during June. Most of the criteria in this video revolves around the batters hitting .400 or near .400 during/post All-Star Break. Still an impressive season from Chipper considering his age (hit .364).
What is most amazing is Rogers Hornsby who averaged over .400 for 5 consecutive years. He didn’t hit over .400 every year, but his average was over .400. Will not be approached ever.
I hate hearing things like "too many singles." That is stat-head speak at its finest. You can't get on base too much. If you are on base and keeping the lineup moving, you are doing your job.

Batting average is not antiquated. You probably cant tell by the stats but i would bet more home runs now are solo home runs. Its a different approach to baseball. Batters used to want to get on base and get driven in by a teammate but now everyone wants to hit the solo home run. Look at mike trout hitting 4 solo homeruns already this year. Weve seen the RBI leaders go from 150 rbi a season to 115 rbi a season in a 15 year span. I remember seeing guys who hit 35 homers have 100 rbi and now i see guys with 35 homers with 60 rbi. I forgot what team i saw recently has 4 guys with 25 or more home runs but the top rbi guy only had 75 while the other 3 were at 60 something rbi. I bet if you asked every mlb team if they would take a .350 hitter they would say hell yea. Its almost a guarantee that guy will get on base. Guy who gets on base makes the pitcher throw more pitches and forces the pitcher to pitch from the stretch. Am i missing something? I get there are other important factors to baseball but there are more important factors than swinging for the fences, striking out, and walking.
@16:11 - The reason we care about BA so much is because it's fun to watch someone hit the ball. That's really it. I try to convince older family folk of the legitimacy of analytics/sabermetrics. It is an important part of the game. But the analytical community surrounding baseball has forgotten what's fun about the game. Players who hit for a high average are the most exciting players to watch. Every time they come up to the plate you know there's a good chance something extraordinary might happen. I really hope the game returns to a state where higher average hitters are valued again.

Wade Boggs hit .401 from 6/9/85 to 6/6/86 in a 162 game span. But cross season spans aren't really valued for that. :)

As a former San Diego resident I do not understand why you left Tony Gwynn off the video. That is reprehensible..because...Tony Gwynn hit .402 over a 162-game period ending in 1995. From July 27th 1993 through May 13, 1995, Gwynn appeared in 162 games, and had 704 plate appearances. He had 624 at-bats with 251 hits (.402 BA), as well as 15 HR, 100 RBI, 121 runs scored, a .457 OBP and a .563 SLG.

Oh geez I didn’t even realize I kinda blocked that memory out. Definitely not my intent, just a common phrase to refer to an intense sports city as a pressure cooker.

Was one of the worst days of my life when I heard the news, so over the years I’ve just mentally blocked out anything to do with that awful period.

Brandon Marsh has a .401 BAbip, which is perhaps more impressive. OBP is a far more important stat. The only player in the last 75 seasons to finish with a .500+ OBP was Barry, who did it four times.

The AL shortstop position in the late 90’s/early 2000s was ridiculous. Jeter, A-Rod, Miguel Tejada,, Omar Vizquel… y’all can let me know who I missed. And the crazy thing is that peak Nomar may have been the best of them. Undoubtedly his body had other ideas. Which is too bad cuz he could have potentially been an all time great.

Disappointed not to see chipper jones’’08 season on here since he was over .400 for a long time that season but overall cool video
He started to fall off during June. Most of the criteria in this video revolves around the batters hitting .400 or near .400 during/post All-Star Break. Still an impressive season from Chipper considering his age (hit .364).

What is most amazing is Rogers Hornsby who averaged over .400 for 5 consecutive years. He didn’t hit over .400 every year, but his average was over .400. Will not be approached ever.

I use to watch Carew Square up to bunt. Then pull the bat back n slap it thru the infield. He was a peice of work!

Good video, not sure when a player could EVEN threat to hit .390 again over the next couple years, not sure if Arraez will hold up.
Batting average is not antiquated. You probably cant tell by the stats but i would bet more home runs now are solo home runs. Its a different approach to baseball. Batters used to want to get on base and get driven in by a teammate but now everyone wants to hit the solo home run. Look at mike trout hitting 4 solo homeruns already this year. Weve seen the RBI leaders go from 150 rbi a season to 115 rbi a season in a 15 year span. I remember seeing guys who hit 35 homers have 100 rbi and now i see guys with 35 homers with 60 rbi. I forgot what team i saw recently has 4 guys with 25 or more home runs but the top rbi guy only had 75 while the other 3 were at 60 something rbi. I bet if you asked every mlb team if they would take a .350 hitter they would say hell yea. Its almost a guarantee that guy will get on base. Guy who gets on base makes the pitcher throw more pitches and forces the pitcher to pitch from the stretch. Am i missing something? I get there are other important factors to baseball but there are more important factors than swinging for the fences, striking out, and walking.

Maybe...he's certainly the only one I remember since Ted Williams who hit over .390 117 games into his team's season. He had the best chance for sure.

@16:11 - The reason we care about BA so much is because it's fun to watch someone hit the ball. That's really it. I try to convince older family folk of the legitimacy of analytics/sabermetrics. It is an important part of the game. But the analytical community surrounding baseball has forgotten what's fun about the game. Players who hit for a high average are the most exciting players to watch. Every time they come up to the plate you know there's a good chance something extraordinary might happen. I really hope the game returns to a state where higher average hitters are valued again.
