  • Botamochi (ぼたもち) or Ohagi (おはぎ) is a Japanese sweet rice ball wrapped in red bean paste. Although most wagashi or traditional Japanese sweets can be complicated, this Japanese mochi recipe is easily prepared using mochi rice and anko, or sweet red bean paste. Learn how to make botamochi and celebrate the spring and autumn Ohigan holidays.

    This would make Adashino Benio from the Twin Star Exorcist/ Sousei no Onmyouji anime very proud and happy.

    Whoa! This was 100% educational for me! Honestly, ohagi were one of those things I absolutely didn't know a thing about...because I always left it to obaachan to make them. hahaha

      Glad to hear it! This isn't something I grew up on, but since moving here it's become one of my favorite types of wagashi.

    When I make my own Anko, I love to use Coconut sugar instead of regular sugar. It gives the Anko a slightly caramelly taste.

    • @NoRecipes
      @NoRecipes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great idea! I use evaporated cane juice which also has a caramel flavor (thought not quite as strong as coconut sugar).

      Okay, now you have me thinking about what would happen if I used maple sugar...

      @@Maplecook I think that would be dope AF. BTW adding some quinoa or mochimugi to the mochi rice is a nice way to add some additional texture.

    I love hagi, but I'm on a diet. 😆 And I loved how it looks beside that matcha -- a perfect combo. ❤️ Are you going to make a version dipped in black sesame and kinako, too?

    • @NoRecipes

      Thanks! Yea I think I need to go on a diet too after working on the recipe for a few weeks and eating all the test results😅 The coated version has the rice on the outside so I figured I'd split it into another video some other time.

    Do regular rice work? I don't have mochi rice 😔

    • @NoRecipes
      @NoRecipes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure what you mean by "regular rice" but you need to use a type of glutinous rice in order to get the rice to stick together properly.

  • @jeremychoo934

    Why not just use a rice cooker to cook the rice?

    • @salysellsss
      @salysellsss 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not everyone has a rice cooker.

    • @NoRecipes
      @NoRecipes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you own a rice cooker you probably already know how to cook rice using it, so the stove top directions are for people who don't have one.
