After 35+ yrs oldhead here, engineer and music producer. and love watching your interviews..this older one hit home. When my old studio was the off campus real world teaching facility..i used painting with sound as the example for creativity to interns and students. Ex: fader is how much paint on brush. Pan is where brush hits canvas. EQ is only changing a blue shade to dark, light, etc of blue. Effects are how you want the listener (viewer) to feel the mood of the whole..ie: dark, light, airy, happy, sad. Etc..and if you choose you can make anything blend with another by choice. Ps. You. SYLVIA, CLA, clearmountain, etc continue to show me more of what i want to be better at and continue to learn from. So...a big thank you to all who share, mentor, and teach with ego aside. For creativity, ego is the only limiter. Hugss to you all..

Sylvia Massy is my ultimate favorite Producer Engineer. I was introduced to her from Skunk Anansie and I wanted her to produce and engineer our record. Great episode I've been waiting for this one.

Wooowww - the concept of taping up to mute the unused strings on a guitar for clarity just blew my mind. That comment alone made it worth the watch. I like her sooo much.

I really felt the point on being without the seperated rooms it really makes working with musicians better. When I am in the studio talking to the guitarist through talkback and being at home in my homestudio and having him sitting next to me the result is getting way better and it happens faster cause i can talk to him more direct and we're in one space.

I really enjoyed the interview with Sylvia. In this modern age of production, where it seems as if nearly everything is pre-fabbed, looped, sampled, edited, pitch corrected and time-aligned to perfection - and generally Pro Tooled to death - I find her somewhat "unconventional" approach to producing as being very refreshing, and actually, more "conventional" than many may think - because she places the attention and focus on exactly where it should be: the creativity and the performances, which are things that seem to have gotten lost these days, when performances are now programmed and corrected, to the point that all "life" and "soul" are tossed away with the click of a mouse, and are replaced with soul-less, generic tracks.Keeping an open mind, and coaxing the best she can out of the performers she works with, pushing them past their limits, taking risks, thinking outside of the "normal", and paying attention to the ART of it all... which is what EVERY producer should do, because these are the primary foundations of ALL great music, is what makes her successful, not her gear. Not that her Neve console is something you'd expect - or even want - to be down-played or overlooked - after all, it is a beauty, and yes, gear does matter - but, you could have the most current, cutting edge recording and mixing technology available, coupled with the finest and best-sounding recording equipment ever made... but if there isn't something there to capture to BEGIN with... if there isn't that creative "spark" - that passion and soul within the performances, then none of that other stuff really matters much.IMHO of course ;)

that "lady" showed tool how to be creative in the studio. With shotguns and pianos. She hung surge from SOD upside down to get a proformance out of him. She is a masterful engineer and creative spirit. SO much that even though I have never met her or likely ever will she has singlehandedly inspired the shit out of sound exploration for me. get her book, grab a hose and get to it (inside joke).

Wondering if you would typically flip the phase of the input signal on from the mics you set up for over the shoulder drum mics in relation to any close mics coming in on the kit facing toward the drummer. By themselves that track sounds lovely, just wondering how it sounds in your full kit mic mix then and what steps you would take like equidistant placing in relation th the snare and those kind of general buggeries.

Ah, the dangers of sponsorship. Dave, Herb, I totally understand you need to fund the channel somehow, (especially now you can't be earning much from the mixes any more!) But, everything reviewed by that company suddenly turns out 'killer', all the while the poor onlookers get one looooong advert instead of objective review and learn absolutely nothing at all. Sorry but all but one of those drum takes sounded not good to my ears (taking into account youtube compression as much as possible). maybe it was a poor kit, but I've heard better £200 mics in worse rooms.
Beware gear reviews of the sponsors guys!
