If you’re a non-traditional student, what was your pathway to medicine? Comment below.

As a practicing physician who graduated from medical school 23 years ago, I find it strange that I check into the channel on occasion. Like the content in this video, I transitioned from engineering to medicine. Straightforward process. Complete the requirements. Submit application. Fun channel to relive past experiences.

I went to undergrad and grad school for mathematics with the purpose of being a teacher. After teaching for a few years, it wasn’t as passionate for me anymore and I wanted to try something different. So then I took an EMT course. I really liked it, but didn’t like the chaotic nature of the job. Sticking with healthcare, I applied to be an ophthalmic technician at an eye clinic. Since then, I’m enjoying it and having more fun than before. The doctors I work with are every nice and I’m learning lots of new things everyday.

I am so grateful that you made this video! Like seriously, Dr. Jubbal, you are awesome! As a fourth year electrical engineering student who is seriously considering going into medicine after graduating, this helped out a ton, and definitely answered all of the main inquires I had on what steps to take. Before watching this video, I wasn't even completely sure what the pre requisite courses were, but now I know and totally plan to do a Post--Bacc now. I 100% agree with the end and do see how a special narrative can really help a non biology premed and I'm honestly glad to be in engineering because of that, since for my senior design, my team is building a device that can automate CPR. It will be very similar to the locus devices currently being used by EMT's except there will be enhanced functionality in ways that no device on the market currently has and we hope to get a patent our our design. If I ever do become a doctor, I totally plan to use electrical engineering in my medical research, since I would just love to use my background in electrical engineering to improve hospital equipment, create robotic prosthetics and implants, and to hopefully be among the first generation of pioneers to work in cybernetics.

Yes and no. You can get your BSN, then take med school prerequisites, and go to medical school. It doesn’t change any of the courses you have to take, but it does give you some exposure to medicine and medical specialties prior to medical school.
