THANX loads was hoping to find a review as I am considering TANKENs for my LEVO TURBO as they are on SALE. Though I live in the SIERRAS I like to ride low & easy taking my time. Good review. Decided to give them a try.. THANX
Think you’ll dig them especially if you’re into low pressures. The support from the casing itself is pretty good. Another tire I would highly recommend with similar if not better casing support would be the new Conti Kryptotals
@@mrpercussive Ive only got 1200 miles on my BUTCHERS & will ride them some more this winter. Coastal & flats. I like to take advantage of sales for items I need. Just upgraded brakes ,cassette, front forks (FOX 36) etc. These look to be well worth the price. (on sale for $29). I am 70 yo with a lifetime of arthritis & sensitive joints(LYME). I find the FSR MTB suspensions to be wonderful to adapt to my needs. Today Ill be riding 5k/ft mid sierras. Fire roads.. These posts are great. thanx again..Specialized turbo levo is my favorite of 3 bikes.. Great not just for youngsters but suit the needs of the geriatric very well.. Safety is enhanced when the suspension can be dialed in for varied conditions. Slow & easy is my style.. live long & prosper..
Just ordered the 29x2.3. I do mostly park (both flow and tech) and a bit of local trails. I'm adv beginner to intermediate working on becoming advanced (i.e. I do up to single blacks). I've been doing that on a trail bike with xc tires and have actually only gotten a couple of repairable flats. The knobs def tear off on the gnarly tech, so I'm hoping these tires will suit where I am and where I'm trying to be this year. Thanks for the review. It helped me pull the trigger on them.
IRC has been well know in the dirt bike world, so glad they dropped a mountain bike tire. I just saw the 29x2.3 is on sale for $29.99 from the IRC website. So cheap I have to give them a try. I'm coming of of Maxxis High roller IIs and relatively new to Mountain biking. I run out here in the East Bay, Northern California so can't wait to see how they handle the trails here in winter, and eventually summer.
Yea they were actually pretty big back in the day for mountain bikes as well and then kinda disappeared for a minute. I think i'll dig them man. I'm from Oakland and rode this tire out there quite a bit. That casing support is pretty next level for when you hit those corners hella hard. No need to worry about them folding!
@@SecondHalfofLife Sick!!! Yea man I'm glad that i was around for the beginnings of that track. Tell Mike, Ian, Travis and Kevin I said hi if you see them. Actually, come to think of it, every riding clip in this review video is from the bay
They had a sale earlier for 24.99 I got on both sales and even got my quote/name in one of their ads lol Love my IRC Tanken and my Panaracer Swoop AT mullet combo
@@PghMtbRides that's awesome!!! Yea i was hoping to see more from IRC especially after releasing this great tire! Wonder if they're developing some new stuff and releasing some more tires soon
I am currently running Tanken 29x2.3 on a Giant Talon 2021 and i love it (mostly because it rolls pretty fast for this kind of tyre). I still not able to get out to some of the offroad section too much but the exprience still very good with these tyre
Yea i was pleasantly surprised by that too. Rolled well enough that I could still hold some of that speed and still pull moves on a pumptrack. Like mentioned in the video though the casing is really stiff so it may be if you're running the same pressures as a different tire you used to before, it's just currently a lot firmer than that
@@mrpercussive and i have to agree with the casing too, i have the Tanken and a Magic Mary (i don't remember the exact model, probably have to check again) next to each other and the Tanken seems to be thicker when you actually touch and pressing again the casing Other thing like the width, i have Tanken 2.3 next to DHR 2.4 but the Tanken still looks bigger (not too much but you definitely see it) @@ And i am curious about your filming setup (action camera) because it looks crisp, sharp and stable at the same time btw nice video likes always!
@@HaiNguyen0112 maxxis usually comes in a little narrower than most other brands anyways and yea the Tanken 2.6 measured true to it's size. I'd expect the 2.3 to do the same. This video was filmed with a Hero9 and edited with Davinci Resolve
Finally someone that has given a decent review on the Tanken's! The measurements are a bit bigger than what they are as I have a set(29x2.6 f / 29x2.4 r) myself on my Revel Rascal. The casing I felt was pretty decent but the tire itself is pretty thin. The build of the tire looks the part but on pinch flats its hit or miss. I think you meant to say the rubber compound. Have to agree when slamming or railing into a berm the tire for some reason is kinda hard to fold but I have heard it a few times by also riding with no inserts. I have had a few dings( patch repaired once and it has an additional plug in a separate incident) in but I'm pointing that to the wheelset( I9 Enduro 305). One thing I looked at was the center tread design and the side knobs and the ride feel its closest to imo is the Maxxis HRII(fast rolling and grippy plus look at the design including the side knobs) but feels BETTER, FASTER and that's where you feel the DHR-ishness come to in effect when riding. AND YES THESE TIRES WORK! ONLY 2 cons I have about +IRC Tire USA - Bike is their emails using their site is non existent. Second con would be there should be a slightly heavier casing option that falls somewhere in between EXO+ and DD for those bike park or local chunk trails which I do have here in Northwest Arkansas. IF.... big IF.... IRC makes a new MTB tire with 2 casing choices in either 27.5&29 like a old 26 Mythos(center strip pattern) mixed with a Mibro hybrid that can compete in both tread design and all around performance like the Aggressor then we have to have someone do a bike tire shootout. Last thing I would nitpick about is wider wheels like maybe a 34/36mm would benefit these wider tires than a 30.5mm rim.
Nah i really meant the casing. It's super stiff and supportive and feels comparable to a DH casing to me and that's why i'm having to run crazy low pressures. Can't say much about it being thin for puncture protection as I've only been riding these tires when i got back to California and the rocks out here aren't as sharp as the ones on the east coast. As for folding and squirms in hard and side loads, haven't had an issue. I did manage to finally find a rim on the front when I was being towed through that waterfall ride by Bike Somm. Landed in a hole and immediately had a rock thing at compression. Looked like it burped a little as you can see sealant marks on the rim but didn't lose much pressure if at all. Never ridden the High Roller II but did ride the original Highroller almost exclusively as a back tire way back when. All i can say is that it feels like a DHR2 and i like the feel. Wished the thread compound was a little gummier though as on wet rocks and slick roots, things can get hairy every once in a while. Sucks to hear about having a hard time contacting IRC USA. Maybe it's just the holidays and people are on vacation or something? I'd agree with having a softer thread compound option and possibly a beefier casing to run in the rear. Yea I'm not a fan of wide rims. Tires tend to feel to square for my taste. Hell usually when I run a 2.5 i normally like the feel of a rim about 25mm ish so the 28mm of the Spike 33 actually feels pretty good with the 2.6 to me. But as I mentioned in the video, what someone needs from a bike setup can be subjective. What may work for me might not for someone else.
@@mrpercussive " i'm having to run crazy low pressures" I'm pretty confused about this as well... My Maxxis DHF/Aggressor pressures were 23psi/28psi but these tires feel hard as heck at even 21psi... I feel like they should be sub-20psi but am fearful of running that low of pressure...
@@dscoduc Yup! The support from the casing is pretty amazing. I'm running 18 front and 21 back on the 29x2.6/27.5x2.6 right now and that seems to be the sweet spot for me being a 130lbs rider. Understand that the slacker and longer your front center on the bike as well, you can run a bigger disparity in pressure difference between the front and rear so yea wouldn't worry too much about going sub 20 on the front. Also not sure if you're running inserts, but with them running lower volume air also will make the suspension component of the tire more progressive so there's that as well for running low pressures and still having support.
@@mrpercussive Based on your info I am going to give it a try at 18lbs front and 21lbs rear to see how it feels... Another oddity with these tires is the actual width vs the advertised width. On my DT Swiss XM1700 the front I measured the 2.6" to be 2.6", but the rear 2.3" measured out to be 2.5"...
@@dscoduc sounds like you've got some wide internal width rims. Not uncommon for tires to get a little squared up running those for smller sizes. But yea give 18/21 a try. You may even want to try 19/22 or something as I am on the lighter side of things at 135lbs
I ride on pavement to reach trails or dirt roads, usually a mile or two. Do you think those couple of miles would be miserable with a 27.5x2.4 on the rear, and a 2.6 on the front of a nukeproof scout? I want a tire that’s harder so they won’t wear out so fast since I ride on concret/asphalt a lot.
a mile or two of pavement isnt going to be miserable as long as you're not expecting to be going road bike speeds... just sit and spin and putz to the trail. You'll get there :)
@@mrpercussive okay sweet. Thanks for the fast reply. I’ll have to pick these up for my build. It’s going to be a single speed. Wanting to try something a little different and more simple. Going to throw a marzocchi bomber z2 on the front.
@@BryceKimball7.3 nice! Yea these tires are pretty rad. But yea they might pretty darn aggressive on the single speed depending on what kind of build or riding you're looking to do with it
