    As a point of clarification, Lent actually ends on the evening of the Thursday of Holy Week at the start of the Triduum. At this point, the Paschal fast begins, running until the completion of the Triduum at the Easter Vigil on Saturday evening.

    What is the purpose of abstaining from vises, only to return to them after 40 days?

    • @messagesofChrist
      @messagesofChrist  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, I personally don't see that as part of Lent. Yes, people do that, but if celebrated correctly, it can help you refocus, just like the Sabbath. Yes, we should worship every day, not just the Sabbath, but one day a week helps us to refocus. I see that as something that can be learned from Lent. If you only celebrate it to return to vises after 40 days, then I agree, but if you use it to recommit, then I think it has a great deal of benefit.

    • @jeanie6279
      @jeanie6279 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The idea is not to return to the vices, or do enjoy pleasures less frequently and indulgently thereafter. Lent is a time to realize that the "goods" and pleasures of this world are nothing in comparison to the "goods" of love, forgiveness, and resurrection that come from Christ and the unfathomable riches and joy of heaven. We strive to renounce the things that distract us from Christ and increase the efforts to become holy saints made for heaven. We are made for heaven, not this world. Ideally, with each and every Lent we grow more detached from the things of the world and grow closer to Jesus Christ, Our Savior. Lent also helps us, by way of alms and prayers, to do more for others and hopefully help bring more souls to Christ.

    I don’t understand why there should be a certain period for this type of lifestyle. We are called to live this all the time .I don’t believe in celebrating “lent” . This should be how we live already, why give up the tobacco or alcohol for 40days ? What about the rest of the days? we just smoke until next lent? We’re called to die to ourselves continually . Also Easter & Christmas are pagan holidays. The question we should ask ourselves is “Does heaven recognize this set apart day” .

      My family is catholic and 7 years I've been trying to teach them that they are wrong but I stopped because God told me, Judgement has fallen on them, all I can do now is pray.

      Because God never says anything about cultural traditions being wicked. In fact Jesus honored many of the Jewish traditions in his teachings, such as marriage customs not found in the Old Testament, later traditions about the various Jewish Feasts. The issue he had with traditions is if they led you away from the true purpose of the law. That is when he condemned it. Just one example. The command about Passover in Exodus never mentions multiple cups of wine, but later four cups of wine were added as tradition to the ritual of Passover. And Jesus uses these multiple cups, the cup after the supper to begin the ritual of communion.

I have attended Lent quite a few times and very much love the idea of preparing for the Easter season through Lent. As one good friend of mine said, we have Holy Envy for practices such as Lent. I do believe our church is the "restored" church as you called it, but I also believe there are many, many things we can learn, and should learn from other Christians. Simply put, I believe there is far too much good among the many Christain churches just to discount a beautiful tradition just because it is not your faith.

      It commemorates the 40 days of fasting. The video never says that Jesus did this before Holy Week. @@messagesofChrist "I’d be careful on how you judge another, especially saying someone is not a true Christian.".
      Do you even know what a Christian is? Clearly, you don't. A Christian is a person who follows the teachings of Jesus Christ. As Jesus said at John 8:31: “If you obey my teaching, you are really my disciples." Now, tell me, did Jesus teach his followers to celebrate Lent? NO! If you don't agree, show me from your Bible where _any_ Christian celebrated Lent, or even Easter.

      Teachings from Jesus: “Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?”

      @@messagesofChrist What a sad person you are. You claim that Christians celebrate Lent, yet, when I requested that you show me from the Bible where it says that _any_ Christians celebrated Lent, you can't do it. Instead, you quote a scripture that has absolutely nothing to do with my request. Maybe this will teach you not to say things you can't prove.

      Correct, lent was not practiced in the New Testament. I don’t suggest at all in the video that it is Biblical or needs to be practiced. The thing I do hope people learn is that taking 40 days to focus on the suffering, death, and resurrection is not a bad thing. In fact it is a very good thing. If Lent does that for someone, I’m good with it not being Biblical.

    Bullshit. Some dude went camping in the spring, he ate too many mushrooms, couldn't kill a deer, and came back to town with a bunch of campfire ash on his face cuz he was sleeping in the dirt.
