  • Orcas are a beautiful species that have been studied in and out of captivity, yet still, there is a lot we don’t know.
Here are 10 amazing facts about the killer whale!

    They’re Not Even Whales
The image of the “killer whale” and their elusive reputation for consuming colossal sized prey, may be debunked when the world learns these majestic mammals aren’t even whales at all. Though orcas are killer in the sense that they’re cool, the name derives from a diet consisting of whales; hence, killer of whales.
    The Deets
The little guy will typically be 6 to 9 feet long, while their adult counterparts can reach 23-32 feet. To contradict their offspring, an adult male weighs up to six tons- almost the size of a large bus. Due to their immense size and power, these fierce swimmers have been recorded at speeds of up to 33 miles per hour. The average life of a male orca is 29 years. Females have significantly longer lives, despite the fact that they endure menopause, and research suggests that their longevity is to help care for the other young members of the pod. In the wild female orcas live an average of 50 years, though much older accounts claim 80 years or more.
    The Hunt Is On
Extremely swift animals, the speed of a dolphin makes it a much sought-after catch, so in the midst of a high-speed chase an orca will ram and stun its prey before going in for the kill. Orcas are unable to take their victim out with a fatal bite, as opening their mouth causes a painful drag along their lower jaw. So, a game of bumper cars ensues, and the orca always wins.
    They Get Around
The orca species ranges from the Arctic to the Antarctic and move freely everywhere from the ice-capped waters of the north and south to the rhythmical movement of warmer waters along the equator. Orcas can be found around the tropical Hawaiian Islands stretching to the Galapagos and the Gulf of California. They come in second to humans as far as global distribution; yet, orcas are not limited to our ocean’s alone- some have been spotted in freshwater rivers such as the Rhine, Thames and Elbe rivers. In one instance a solo orca was seen 100 miles up the Columbian river, hunting for fish.
    They Stick Together
When it comes to the discrepancy of pods versus clans, they are solely distinct due to language. A single clan consists of several pods of family groups. While each pod speaks the same language, they each have their own dialect and accent.
    What’s in A Name?
Theory suggests that past whalers became familiar with the intended prey and denoted the beasts as “killers of whales”; over time, the name became corrupted by the kind of people who love all things grim and grisly. To add, the Latin name for orca is Orcinus orca, which translates to “Of the kingdom of the dead.” The interpretation correlates the Roman God of the underworld, Orcus, with the fierce hunting reputation of the ominous killer.
    Mammals Have Menopause Too
Despite the fetus facility giving out, these three entities continue to live on for decades although their prenatal abilities do not- why is this? Since some may argue reproduction is the basis for evolution, why would a species stop reproducing mid-life? Science has proposed a fascinating explanation known as the grandmother hypothesis. An idea founded in 1966, the theory proposes that older females forgo the option to bear more in order to support the ones they have.
    Orcas Evolve as Humans Do
A special team set out to compare the genomes of two separate cultures of orcas in the Pacific Ocean, as well as three cultures in the Antarctic Ocean. To the surprise of the group, the genomes fell into five different groups which perfectly coincided with the cultural distinctions in each. Since only humans are known to evolve based on their culture, this can lend a major breakthrough for the scientific world.
    The Gang Gets Invincible
Remarkably, orcas don’t have any predators. They are at the very top of the food chain and are therefore considered apex predators. Since orcas are among some of the largest and most powerful creatures in the deep blue, no other animal is able to challenge them- not even the mammoth-sized blue whale, and not even the rapacious great white shark.
    Deadly by Association
A killer whale called Tilly, one famous “Shamu” impersonator for over 25 years at SeaWorld, killed three different people on separate occasions. There is much controversy as to why this happened, circulating back to heartbreaking living conditions, horrible treatment, and health- as poor captivity and the deterioration of one’s wellbeing could cause any animal to snap. The renowned documentary Blackfish highlights the infamous Tilly, as the film uncovers problems with the sea-park industry, human’s treatment of nature, and the high intelligence of these remarkable animals.

Do you think dolphins should be allowed in captivity? Why, or why not?

    • @sognodiangeli5436
      @sognodiangeli5436 5 ปีที่แล้ว +121

      What Lurks Below
No, they should not. No living being should be kept in captivity, it’s an unnatural state of being regardless of motive.
Especially, dolphins, orcas, great apes, elephants, these are highly intelligent, and exhibit many states of consciousness/awareness.
If we are to do something, it should be to change our perception, and our behaviours since we are at the top of the food chain, and top apex predators.
We have this ability of taking our earth, and all living things for granted. We live as though there are no consequences for our actions, and herein lies our problem.

Never been a reported attack in the wild, that's not too hard to believe considering if you was attacked in the wild as this would then place you in the sea.
If you have been attacked in the sea then most likely you die in the sea therefore not able to tell people you have been attacked.
      Dead men tell no tales.
Your statement does not make me believe that a massive orca would not attack you in the wild, as all animals are opportunistic when threatened, curious and starving.
We know that different orcas around the world are adapted to different types of food.
But like any other animal a meal is a meal does not matter what the food looks like.
Orcas eat seals which are large prey not too different in size than a human, sharks often mistake a surfer for a seal or a turtle.

It is the equivalent of keeping a baby in a cardboard box . We do not keep dogs or cats in cramped confinement. Orca are significantly more intelligent and needful of variety of experience. It is a shameful indictment of our culture to inflict such cruelty

I do not think that dolphins, orcas, beluga whales, nothing like that should be allowed in captivity. They were never intended to be in captivity, they belong with their families. Just like on blackfish, the man that was with the crew that caught Tilley, it is just like kidnapping a human child from their families. Their enclosures are not large enough for them to actually be living in, they are tortured when you stop to think about it, and the theme parks are only looking for more money in their pockets than they actually care for the animal itself. Just like the one news anchor lady said, how would you feel if you were kept in a bathtub for over 25 years, I have to agree, I would be getting really irritated as well. These animals do not belong in captivity, they belong in the wild, where God intended them to live. Leave them alone and let them live their lives. They do not attack humans, they are just like any other dolphin, they will protect a human life. They are social animals and they want to be friendly to people as well. Leave them alone and just watch them from a boat. They do not belong on display in an aquarium or theme park!

They also were not meant to die from plastics, toxins, by-catch, shootings, ship strikes, etc. One thousand cetaceans are killed daily Worldwide due to 7.3 Billion people, with that number going up every day. So I guess it's okay to let these animals die off because of our greed. There are fewer that 13 Vaquita left, fewer that 20 Maui's dolphin left, the Yangtze dolphin went functionally extinct in 2006 and the list goes on with all species of cetaceans dwindling. Let them die while you and those like you sit in judgement, on your keyboard doing nothing.

I loved your video and only have two remarks: (1) yes, orcas are dolphins, but the family of dolphins, in turn, are whales, more specifically toothed whales (whereas the other whales are called baleen whales), and (2) please do include metric measures as well, I did not imagine how big they are at all with just the US metric system. And the others already exposed the 30-year-old life expectancy as a lie made by Seaworld to justify the animals' short life span when in captivity. I mean, downright disgusting. Never support the captivity of anyone, let alone intelligent creatures with culture and documented social interactions and connections. Not even in the name of 'science', true scientific findings can namely only arise from studying animals in their natural habitat, otherwise, all their behaviour is distorted and thus also the findings. Garbage in, garbage out; except here we also have a high moral cost to pay in addition.

Unlike their transient pinniped eating cousins out along the coast they are often quite vocal. I actually sang with them a couple times while spear fishing. They are very social creatures who are far too intelligent to be kept as slaves to entertain a bunch of howling apes.

I believe that one Orca attack was at Point Sur near Big Sur, CA in the 1970's. It's a super wild area and mistaken identity is understandable. I grew up near Monterey bay CA. not far at all from Point Sur. Those areas have tons of seal rockeries. One time I was running on Del Monte Beach used to all the time and both Orca pods and great whites hunting seals quite commonly. Carmel, CA near point sur is full of all these creatures. Been chased many times from the shore up onto the dunes due to frightened seals being chased by a pod or great white very close to shore. My parents never believed me until last summer they were walking along Del Monte Beach a huge seal came racing out of the waves baring it's teeth and scared when my parents looked back at the water a pod of orcas swam off. I've seen three great whites breach while hunting it's very strange when watching at first it doesn't seem real and you know what's right off shore. Completely believe these smart, clever, social emotional, apex animals should be in the wild only much like a great white that's their home and should be no place else.

People need to stop saying orcas live up to 100 years old. Only one known orca reached that age, a female named J2 "Granny" who was a little over 100 years old. Many orcas in the wild die young, mostly before they reach 10 years of age, and many calves don't survive their first days, weeks or months of life. In average, males reach about 20 or 30 and females about 30 to 40 or even 50, though it depends on the ecotype. Call me crazy, but orcas at SeaWorld tend to have a longer lifespan. Currently, their oldest orcas range from 30 to 54 years old and they're all thriving. It's a feat for many wild orcas to reach that age.

The pods have been known to follow capture boats while calling to their young. The captive environment would never replicate the natural one, life span is shorter, health declines, and the animals suffer depression. Tillicum’s case was absolutely heart breaking. Males can live up to 60-70 years or more and females can reach between 80 to 90 years, possibly more. To all the people commenting on how wild Orcas have longer lifespans then what the video tells: No! They don´t. Not nowadays. It´s possible that this is caused by stress due to human activity (polution, overfishing, hunting, habitat lost), but a 70 YO male or an 80 YO female are extremely rare ocurrences. It´s like claiming that human life expectancy is 100 to 120 because on the few notable individuals who have reachd such ages.
Captive Orcas live even shorter lives, most having died in their 10´s or 20´s. Their infant mortality rate is even higher then in the wild. Those are the reasons I´ve oposed cetacians in captivity for any reason other then reabilitation for many years.

@@yornus_martinus3093 most of the wild Orcas studied in recent years didn't live to those ages. Most ancient Orcas' age (Granny and Old Tom) is estimated by the time span in which they were observed in the wild by people other then biologists. And this can give a lot of incorrect results. An younger Orca can be mistaken for an older one, making it look like she had lived longer then she actually did. Observations by marine biologists and the study of biological material indicate that most female Orcas don't live past their 60's and most males die in their late 20's or early 30's.
This can be due to human activity though. Maybe the farther a population of Orcas is from human influence, the longer they leave. But that is yet to be proved.

It's obscene for Orcas and Dolphins to be captured for the entertainment of humans. Though the captivity at aquariums is thought to be benign, do you think humans in prisons think their imprisonment is benign? The people who work with captive orcas and dolphins deserve what they get when an orca gets pissed off at being held captive. These trainers are nothing short of evil.

With technology (Internet) being as advanced as it is, it is no longer necessary to have zoos or the likes of Sea World. Especially when it comes to such intelligent creatures as whales, dolphins, wild cats and primates. I'm sure others will find more examples to expand this list. As animals such as tigers, lions, rhinos, eagles, become endangered species, that's where national parks and animal reserves become necessary. But zoos and circuses should be done away with. There are plenty of films free on the internet that the whole world can watch almost all animals to their heart's content without subjecting animals to a prison.

These majestic creatures should never be kept in captivity. They're so intelligent that it's cruel and unusual punishment to keep them in captivity in SeaWorld.
I don't know what's worse, keeping them in captivity because they lost the ability to survive in the ocean, or just letting them all go and seeing if they can adapt back to survive in the wild.

Very very few wild caught killer whales would ever be able to return to the wild. Those born in captivity would never survive in the wild. They lack the cultural upbringing, language skills and often have serious behavior issues. The only option for them to be in the 'wild' is in a sea sanctuary. They could experience the ocean world, but still remain in human care and not be forced to do tricks for their food.

Sea World was built to use captive animals to attract paying visitors like zoos and aquariums. It is there to make a profit for the owners. Some of these places add breeding rare animals and scientific research to their beneficial activities.

I've head it said that dolphins "enjoy" living in captivity. One easy way to prove it: open the sea gates and give them the chance to go or stay. If they stay, then I'll admit it.
There was a case where the US Navy trained a dolphin for some purpose [can't remember] - the first time it was deployed in open water, it buggered off and never came back.
    Seems to answer the question.
