(1466) LockLab Pinning Tray Experiments

  • In video 1466 I document some of the experiments (trials and failures) to produce an economical pinning tray. My objective was to use my CNC 3D carver to make a nice tray that I could sell on the website to help offset the cost of the giveaways and shipping, but it just didn't quite work out that way... Making these trays, even with a CNC controlled carver, simply takes too long to produce in quantity.

    Wow! What a process that proved to be. Thanks for sharing all of it, and not just the final result... and thanks again for the awesome pinning trays. 👍 Can’t wait to see what other uses you find for your new CNC router!

      I agree. Failures teach a lot more than successes, especially since a lot of times, the best thing to use and best results are not always the most economical and most available. It's like saying "Here you go guys, I made a pinning tray from solid gold. I had tried many other things and had various problems, but found a solid gold pinning tray worked great. Here are the plans for anyone wanting to make one.". As opposed to saying "I tried this and this happened, then I tried this and while it fixed that problem it created this problem" and so on. I am learning wood whittling/carving and this video is exactly the type of educational videos I am looking for, which is, examples of how different materials are cut/carved differently.

    Look at pharmaceutical counting trays too. The other option to offset your costs is to sell the plans for us to make them at home, and the bonus to that is that you don't have to ship anything. Love your experimentation!

    That final version really is great. I made my own after watching your video with the flooring samples and added more 'blank' space on the left because I'm left handed, so its nice to have a spot to rest the heel of your hand when working in the tray (sorting after gutting or repinning etc).
    If you do have this as a product one day, add a left hander and I'll be buying... Well, it looks so good I'd buy it anyway

    I bet the mistakes in all the early ones where the depths of the sudden plunges are wrong are caused by operating the mill in mode G64 and not G61, with the feed rate too fast for the acceleration capability of the machine, when not in G61 mode (exact stop mode) the machine will literally cut corners to be able to maintain the feed rate. This would go much faster by routing the shapes of the cavities rather than doing a raster cut with the Z axis doing so much work.

  • @Reman1975
    @Reman1975 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know I'm posting on an old video, But it could possibly be economically viable to produce these. You could make 4 of them perfectly without chamfering on the back, Then make a reusable silicone tray mold and cast the trays out of epoxy. The rear chamfering could be added with a router afterwards. Or if you thought there was a demand for them, the trays general design could be replicated as a thin vacuformed plastic unit.
    Personally I feel that there could be market for a light and low cost vacuformed pinning tray as most of the cheaper mass produced wooden or plastic ones seem to be made in the USA, And on items that are cheap but heavy, shipping to customers in the rest of the world often costs more than the item.

    Have you considered making the flutes slightly deeper than the dump area? You still get that easy slide action going into the flute but better retention in the flute with less of a chance of the pin going back into the dump area if you bump or tilt the tray should you need to move it.

    I wonder if it might be better to make the pin slots about 1mm or a half mm lower than the open tray area. Then you can dump the pins in the open area and they maybe won't want to come back out of the slots once they have been sheparded into a slot.

  • @skawn
    @skawn 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    For the tool marks, what would it look like if you had it run multiple passes, but rotated the boards by 90 degrees between passes? Also, if the goal is to slide the pins into the channels, what if the channels were set slightly lower than the dump area so after sliding the pins in, they stay in their respective channels?

    The ball end mills will give smoother finishes in larger sizes. As far as the logo goes, the best way to do that is a v-bit with a 3d routine that traces the letters.
    If you're having troubles plunging, using a drill to run in a pilot hole is very helpful. That makes a space for the center of the end mill.

    I don't have a CNC machine nor can I afford it. No one makes good trays so... dumping pins on a towel is still my only option. Thanks Bill for the tease.

    As a professional machinist, skip those (stupid) ballnose endmills. Use a bullnose instead (flat bottom with a radius only on the edges). MUCH fewer passes to get the flat areas really flat and steps only where the material curves anyway so our eyes and touch aren't as demanding.
    To get down in the material, don't plunge stright down - use a spiral motion (with a slightly smaller tool if necesarry).
    Get rid of the cut material, pressurized air or a vacuum can make wonders.
    Have fun and fiddle around with the different strategies your CAM software provides...

    I dont use CNC machines but my understanding is that they are not very economical on the home scale. You probably need a beefier machine and or softer materials to crank these out.
    That said, as a giveaway, they are very nice.
    Maybe one solution is cut down the length of each of the pining slots. So you are using something to better represents the overall length of the pin stack and not something too long. I understand some locks need this much room or you want to accommodate alien locks but average users only have 5 to 7 chambers and only 3 (or 4 if mastered) elements present in each chamber.
    Definitely search for machinable plastics, that might also speed up your milling time a bit. Ultimately, the speed of the mill head is going to limit your net pass speed. Think of how fast you run a mill with a 4mm drill bit when cutting holes into steel. That is probably faster than the router you are using?

      Adam West, I would have to agree it’s justifiable.

    So, you bought the machine to make them. But your not gonna make them bc it takes too long??

      Partly right. I bought the machine for a variety of projects I want to do, the pinning trays were just one of them. As it turned out, it took too long to make them economically out of corian, so I'm not doing any more of them.

    Maybe you could giveaway some of the rejects. I'm sure some guys here won't mind.
