I’ve said this before, but I cannot understand how Freda Payne the most photogenic, sensual and most beautiful of all Motown stars did not do more than belt out a few hits on the merry-go-round. Wtf went on back then?? I am convinced Hollywood took a look at her, screen tested and said ‘Hell No! She’s just too damn gorgeous and sexy, she’d steal every scene from our Hollywood superstars without even uttering a word’ 😂
Freda was never with Motown! The producers Holland/Dozier/Holland that produced all of the hits for the Supremes, the Four Tops and others had a money dispute with a Berry Gordy (Motown’s founder) and left to start their own label. Freda was one of their first artists but The HoneyCone, Chairman of the Board and others did well too.
@@debrashepard3949 yep agree 👍. I’m 52 now and back in the 70’s when I was a child this song was everywhere. Happy Times. Let’s go back! What U think? TIMEMACHINE Please!!!
I’ve been hearing this song my entire life and this is the first time I’ve seen Freda. WOW, what a knock out! How did a record company not provide the backing to make her a superstar? Beautiful, sexy and talented.
@@josephalberta1145 And her first husband was Gregory Abbott. Makes you wonder if his hit "Shake You Down" was actually about their divorce settlement...
Like you this legendary song is one I’ve been haunted by 😂since childhood. I never knew what Freda actually looked like until a few years ago, 50 years later. …I was stunned into silence at how beautiful, sexy and classy this lady looked then and now. Those age old questions bubbled up again, about race and opportunity in the US, especially for black women at that time. I understand she had a few small TV roles one as a talk show host, but nothing really significant. I’m just left asking what happened??
And 2 years later after your comment I can say the same thing. Heard this song today on some AM radio station out of the Pacific Northwest and made a mental note to check it out on TH-cam. This song has always made me happy 😃 the dancing is rather comical. Lol
I was 12 years old in 1970 when I first saw and heard Freda Payne singing "Band of Gold" on TV. Freda was not only beautiful, sexy, and classy, but she was also amazingly talented, and she stole my heart!
I remember exactly where i was when this first came on our transistor radio , Dugway Utah 1970 , i remember my mom and two sisters danced in the kitchen....after hearing this song and seeing it on our tv my sister decided she wanted to be a dancer like the ones in this video....AHHH.... the memories , i go back if i had a chance in a heartbeat. My mother used to get her hair done the same way.....this music is priceless
I just watched this video of Freda Payne singing Band of Gold, I can honestly say I knew most of the words as she was singing it. Thanks skytrax1 for this video and your good work.
I was 13 when this song came out and developed a huge crush on Freda. What a gorgeous woman!!!!! She would appear on a number of shows then and I couldn't wait to see her. She was one of my earliest big-time crushes and wished I was older---as if I had a chance LOL!!
I cannot help but think this song is about a man on the DL who marries a woman, but is unable to bring himself to seal the deal on their wedding night. Beautifully sung.
Heard this son on the radio. Huge metal fan, rock and roll. Not sure the genre of this song but the build of it makes the hair on my arms raise and that's all that matters
I remember that outfit. It was so Hip back in the days. We dressed Cool and Funky back in the 70’s. What a time to be Alive. So much fun and such Great music. Miss them days and my all time favorites, the 80’s
Man i always loved this tune i ead 15 when it came put it gave interest of my basketball days listening to her back then was mind blowing thank you freda love you
I love the way they just listened then as i did. No histrionics or feeling that you have to dance to a a good or bad song. Or clap till the skin peels off your palms. Today it`s everything is fantastic and great and too over the top for words.Strangers want a hug for god`s sake it`s sick just calm down with the affected emotion.
Had never heard of her or band of gold until I was about a junior in high school in 96. Family was on vacation on Vegas and the four tops were playing the MGM, obviously I knew who they were. We all went to the tops concert and she opened for them and I was glad to discover a new artist. Ended up seeing her and the tops a few times in Vegas after that
I love this! Never knew who sang it. Not until listening to a Tavares track which she was featured on. I think she has a beautiful voice n she's easy on the eyes too...
She is breath taking.., I had a chance to met her in a club back in the day's in Los Angeles., I became speechless when she gave me her attention but I still enjoy the memory of the encounter till this day.
Man in the 70s I was a young bass player probably 14 years old. I was in the Allman Brothers R&B I could learn and I had a 62 jazz base. My brother had given me before he went off the Vietnam. He taught me a little bit before he went off to war, but never came back, but I took that base and it is still my prize possession today and I was sitting in my bedroom one day trying to figure out this baseline. My aunt Joanne came downstairs heard me and heard the song I was doing she said keep playing keep playing you’ll get it. You’ll get it. You’ll get it and all of a sudden she just started wailing, and blew me away and from that day on the bands, I was in when she would ever come to see us. We always made sure that song and heat wave she was coming up to sing and let me tell you she tore the house down I miss my aunt Joanne, she was one hell of a rockin chick, a white girl trapped in a black soul body
what can you say about a song that touches your heart , makes you realise what you had and what has gone , well we had all the time and the innocence of youth This version and video is perfect , beauty and nostalgia , excitement and sadness, all encapsulated in one song ….
As a fan of hard rock and metal I do love Motown music. I’ve heard this song many times in my life and I think it’s one of the best songs I ever heard. Plus this lady is just perfect looking. Look at those legs.

How did she not rank with Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, and even Diana Ross among female soul singers of that era? She was truly the whole package.
Because she's great and they are extraordinary.
Really?
Behave urself
Bc it was a one hit wonder sadly. But she’s beautiful
@@Retro2k90 That's one opinion, I like her singing better and definitely have more of her songs saved to my playlists than any of theirs
Top nr.3 USA🥰

Listened to WLS Chicago as a kid. Loved the mix of Black/White music. But for me it was just music!
Singing and acting are two separate skills

Freda, is just beautiful,!
My gosh she was beautiful!!
In 2004, Freda Payne's "Band of Gold" was voted number 391 in Rolling Stone magazine's listing of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. (Wikipedia)
I didn't realise that they had mannequins for an audience in those days!
But still a timeless classic.
Cadavers now
😅😅
@@josedelgadillo9686 Real nice there, good grief!
Many times they didn't want the audience up dancing if they already had dancers which they clearly do.
They do look like stiffs.
Brilliant beyond words takes me back to my school days

I have to say Freda at this time was the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. You can tell she was the sweetest loving woman in the world.
