*Shikanoko song intensifies* Also, people seriously have to chill with hating on DMs' house rules. If the players don't have an issue with it, it doesn't matter how Monty runs her game. For what it's worth, Silvery Barbs is 100% banned in both my groups too. That spell is... something else. I might even call it proof that WotC doesn't do math when designing things.
First time I'm listening to a new upload. I'm still going through campaign one. From a time long ago. A simpler time. A time when people were orcy. A time when people were Borky.
When Mark said use your imagination imagining how a deer is holding a short sword and shield all I can think of is the cursed deer from adventure Time you know the one that took its hooves off to reveal that it had human hands
The time has come to an end Yeah - this is what nature planned Being tracked by a starving beast Looking for its daily feast A predator on the verge of death Close to its last breath Getting close to its last breath RULES OF NATURE
Oh humblewood, I once used the free hitpoint press content to cheee up a friend, they were running a potion shop and hired the party to help them gather ingredients, to make it more interesting we had potions based off spells they knew and the ingredients were based off material components
Say what you want about the upcoming edition/update to 5e, they at least tapped down on the "Silvery Barbs a success on your own turn/Counterspell your Counterspell to my spell" interaction with the changes to spellcasting.
So fun story related to characters getting eaten. I was fighting a huge undead troll. I ended up getting swallowed, and attacking from the inside. I did enough damage inside to cause it to throw me up, but we flavored it as me cutting my way out through it's belly. It managed to grapple and swallow me a second time, thus beginning the undead slip-in-slide.
I never really had an issue with paladins holding off divine smites until they landed a nay 20 before, normally they cast one of the other smites first and when they land a hit sometimes they ask if they should use divine smite or not, but definitely always on a nat20
Banning silvery barbs is actually pretty wild. I understand Monty wants to make the game more balanced and ive watched every one shot and campaigns and been loving them. Only issues ive had is how somethings and players get so nerfed. ( please dont hurt me, this isn't my game and not telling people what to do) Looked at the twitch VOD to see what people said to Monty about banning the spell.... no one said anything besides like "darn" or "ahh gortcha, DMs call" unless Mods delete all those comments
@@OmyBloopers As a DM that dealt with Silvery Barbs, I get why Monty banned it, though personally, I'd allow it with one of the fallowing addendums: 1) SB is now a Level 2 Spell 2) You can either give disadvantage or advantage on a casting of it, not both 3) You have to cast it BEFORE the dice is rolled/the result is revealed
The DM I had, when I played my first campaign, allowed Silvery Barbs, but banned Counter Spell unless you were a level 20 spell caster. Honestly, it doesn't bother me at all when DMs do this because of how powerful those two spells are for as low level as they are. He also (understandably) put limitations on resurrection spells like Revivify as to make sure you're not just resurrecting teammates left and right because you decided to do something stupid.
Really? Do you have a table with people who are more into RP then combat? As the spell absolutely breaks combat at low lvls (it becomes a bit less of a problem at higher lvls with enemies getting huge modifiers). Also keep in mind if the players can use it, the DM can aswell. Imagine this: You're fighting a powerfull mage with one or more powerfull minions under its command. The paladin of the party just manages to roll a 20 on a roll against the biggest minion (or the wizard itself) and they would absolutely be able to deal amazing damage if they pump a smite into that. Then the enemy mage just cast Silvery Barbs on the paladin. And with that they lose the crit. Then the next turn, the minion gets a crit on their newly gained advantage roll. Downing the paladin. And the only thing the Mage loses is a 1st lvl slot and their reaction. That seems miserable imo. And as a DM I wouldn't put want to have my players endure that. Which is why the spell is often banned from a lot of tables (a lot of Strixhaven stuff is actually banned from a lot of tables, I think Wizards really didn't playtest this book, but that's a different story). As for Monty often nerfing the players, I do feel she does often balance things in favor of the enemies, so that is a fair point to have. But I myself am a DM that likes to use the "rule of cool" a lot, so it might just be a difference in DMing styles. I hope this doesn't come across as aggressive or condescending, I'm just curious how your table handles it and trying to convey why people are against Silvery Barbs as a spell.
@@Breagle A think I like what my DM did to make Revival spells a bit more impactful, is making Diamonds hard to obtain compared to other gems. It makes revives more costly even if the monetary cost remains the same.
