Hi. Was wondering how much this case actually protects the iPad. Obviously the sides and front are open but if I was to drop this would the screen still smash? Your opinion though.
I don’t see them as one being better than the other, they are for totally different styles of use. If you are going to use your iPad 50/50 tablet/laptop then the magic would be a better choice but if you are using it as a tablet primarily with some occasional typing then the smart folio is a better design for that.
Yeah dude for really. The folio seems like it’s really focused on still being a tablet experience and the magic keyboard seems like it’s more focused on bringing a closer laptop experience
I ended up going with the Smart Keyboard folio with a Magic Trackpad 2 either at my desk or in my bag. The tablet experience with the Smart Keyboard finds that great middle ground between operating as a tablet without removing the case and typing and having a laptop-style setup without adding significant bulk or weight. I *really* don't like the idea of having to remove my iPad from its case just to use it comfortably as a tablet. That's bad design, in my opinion. Plus, with the Magic Trackpad, I have a huge, high-quality trackpad available for times where I really want to sit down and go keyboard/"mouse" mode, such as at my desk. I wanted to love the Magic Keyboard, but it has too many compromises for me.
100% agree and have just tried the AMK on a 12.9" it has too many compromises - like small trackpad, trackpad too near the bottom edge, expensive and yet made of easily marked material, heavy, drains ipad battery, doesn't work as a case when in tablet mode. The lack of functions is also very annoying at this price point. Gen 2 will be better maybe?
This is my main concern. I am getting an iPad Pro after owning an iPad Air 3 cos I am passing the air 3 to my family members now. I am just not at all comfortable to remove the iPad from its case just to draw. Drawing is half of my time spent on the iPad and typing is the rest. Having to take it out to draw and forgetting where I left the magic keyboard. The whole experience sounds wrong ! The whole point is to carry it all and use as you want.
Exact same! I HAD the magic keyboard and returned for exactly those reasons! I agree 100%. I hated having to pull it off of my case all the time. I felt like I needed another case for when I’m not using the magic keyboard. I am really happy with the choice the return the magic keyboard.
I agree with this... I have the magic keyboard and am considering getting the folio, as I hate having to remove my iPad to use it as a tablet all the time... quite frustrating...
Just got mine in the mail today. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxhcEDB3r-OJ3_X5hQzr7k1ZofTQy1ao_U The corners of the box was a little smashed but I think that’s more of the shipping’s fault. iPad was in perfect condition though. I ordered the yellow one thinking it was going to be a bright vibrant color. Instead I looks like more of a Gold color. I personally prefer the gold look. Definitely not disappointed but just a heads up to the ones expecting a brighter cream of yellow.
The flipover functionality was for me actually one of the big reasons to get the keyboard fold. I use the ipad a lot of desk and the keyboard folio is ideal for that.
I’d prefer the folio JUST because I already have a MacBook Pro When I work I would need to write on my iPad so if I got the magic keyboard it would be too annoying to constantly take off the iPad. I would also have a separate mouse to use with the iPad
The thing with the magic keyboard case - it is also more heavy when moving around. Drawing with the magic keyboard case is also impossible basically without removing the iPad. With the folio, you can flip the case & have a sturdy stand for drawing & writing
Smart keyboard for me. I read, write, highlight on pdf than typing so the folio is a better suit, i can just fold it with the ipad still on case and it’s lighter. The fact that it’s half the price is just a bonus.
just ordered the Smart Keyboard Folio just because is more compact and portable (I'm student). Also the Logitech Pebble mouse is an amazing and cheaper option. Thanks for the video!
Noah, Noah, 7:05, you need to be more clear about saying “there is additional an additional port for input and data”, the usbc on keyboard is power pass through only, not for data.
You’re right! I assumed and that is a dangerous game. Thankfully I wasn’t super clear about this because somebody accused me of failing to mention this false fact ahaha. Thank you.
I think people are forgetting functionality. The fact that majority of us that bought the iPad don’t have a computer is the reason that makes it the best. It’s for people who do not have a laptop and do not want one. It’s the best of both worlds for me. now I’m able to use my iPad like a computer if I need to do anything online for school, work, and even play. I do not own a MacBook and I never have. The iPad suits all my needs!
I just purchased a smart folio for my iPad Pro 11 inch. I really like it. I got a very good deal on an open box item. The magic keyboard is beyond my budget. And for me the keys are fine on the folio. Thank you for this video. Good analysis.
so much extra weight and not being able to use the cover on tablet mode are deal breakers for me (not to mention the big price). I'm happy with the folio and find the typing actually satisfying. Using it with the magic mouse too
I just picked up my Magic Keyboard... The biggest problem I had with the Smart Folio, is when trying to type with the iPad in the closest screen position, I found I would always hit the screen with my fingers when trying to type using the top few rows of the keyboard, so things would always be getting messed up when I accidentally tapped things on the bottom of the screen!
I really like the smart folio keyboard because it is lighter than the magic keyboard, and I can use a bluetooth mouse as a replacement for the trackpad. In the dark; it will not be as much as a problem since you can memorize the keys in a keyboard plus the lined F and J keys.
I feel like there would be no point in using a keyboard without a trackpad now, it changes the game so much. I can now move the cursor to an exact point in Word, was so frustrating before. And I love typing on the Magic Keyboard, it is next level compared to the Smart Keyboard. That said, typing on the Smart was actually ok and it is so much lighter than the Magic, so if portability is super important to you, more than functionality, get the Smart.
I’ve got both for my 12.9. Both have strengths and weaknesses, but I find the keyboard, trackpad, backlighting, and USB-C port to be major pluses of the Magic Keyboard over my Smart Keyboard Folio. I love the simplicity and flexibility (literally) of the SKF though. Both are great accessories.
Which one is better for keeping the iPad on your stomach while lying in bed, for watching movies? My first thought is the Magic one, because you can angle your iPad at 90 degrees or even less if you need it. But then it might just be too heavy to keep it on your stomach/belly for a long time, compared to the Smart one which is a lot lighter. Also, the Smart one can be propped up on a pillow if you want a better angle at your face.
I think I’m gonna go with the Smart Keyboard (again) when I upgrade. I can touch type so the keyboard being backlit makes no difference to me, and the Magic Trackpad is worth the difference in price for the larger area.
Against my better judgment I purchased the magic keyboard case and I absolutely love it. Other than 3 minor annoyances I have to get over I will never have another case on it because the benefits outweighs them. I do not like the edges around the outside of the case, after long gaming sessions it turned from an annoyance to almost unbearable because of how sharp they are. Also I’m worried about durability. I feel like after time these edges will separate exposing whatever is sandwiched in between it but only time will tell. I also dislike that from time to time if I’m watching a video, adjusting the screen angle, or accidentally hit the keyboard while gaming a blue ring around the outer edge of the iPad will appear that takes a good few seconds to go away (I don’t know what that is). And final I still would like the ability to fold the keyboard completely behind the iPad and believe the best solution for that is to have a hinge release button, maybe on the side opposite of the usb c that would release the locking mechanism at the bottom hinge when pressed allowing the keyboard to be folded flat behind the iPad while still keeping the bottom hinge secure when not being folded. I know it is easy to remove and reattach the iPad from the case but I found myself using this setup a lot in my vehicle while working and in bed before going to sleep. It is very awkward having to set the case aside either open taking a lot of space in the car trying to shove it somewhere or closing it and trying open it one hand and having the iPad in the other ( so the iPad doesn’t fall off where ever I set it down and get damaged) to reattach it when I’m done using it as just a tablet. Other than that I really do love this case and I do believe that it was worth the $350 I paid for it. * On a side note I see a lot of reviewers complaining about the weight of this product and to be completely honest I don’t understand it. I have had it on my iPad since it arrived and have not even noticed the added weight( I take my iPad everywhere I go). I also like the structural support it adds when closed and have not been worried about my iPad bending at all since I initially put it on ( I was always paranoid about my iPad bending no matter what case I had on it before).
That Magic Keyboard is wicked slick, but that thing is expensive. Plus the no secure solution for the pencil and no edge protection were two big deal breakers for me. I just snagged the Logitech Slim Folio for my 11” Pro and that thing is a CHAMP 🏆 I’m surprised they even offer it on the Apple site
Am tossing up between these two as I'm thinking to finally get an ipad Pro. But the Magic Keyboard is $499 here in Australia (the folio is $300) and I'm having a hard time justifying the price for a keyboard that reduces the portability of the ipad and doesn't fold into other positions. I write notes a lot, and I don't like the idea of having to remove the ipad all the time. I'm reallly leaning towards the folio and a bluetooth mouse.
You can just remove the iPad from the magic keyboard then close the keyboard put the iPad on top of it to avoid touching the surface of the desk and draw
I purchased the Logitech slim folio pro for my iPad 12.9/ Totally recommend it if you’re trying to save a little money, and I think its better than the apple smart folio. You can pick it up at Apple for $120, and its an incredible typing experience.
Hi Noah, Thanks for the thorough review. It was very helpful! I was about to ditch the Magic Keyboard because of the need to use use the iPad for drawing sometimes, but your review showed me that, duh, I can easily take the iPad off. And, yes, the keyboard/trackpad experience is way better than the alternative.
Fantastic review. I'm still torn between the two- but the bulkiness and having to remove the ipad is a real compromise for me for the magic kb. I have a MacBook pro I can go to. I wonder if eventually they will upgrade that magic keyboard to be a bit more convenient. Prolly gonna go with the smart keyboard.
Great video as always Noah, one correction thought the USB -C port on the Magic keyboard can not transfer data just power. It’s specifically designed just for pass through charging. Keep up the quarantine content, love the double uploads
I prefer the Smart Keyboard Folio. One of the chief reasons? The keyboard is fully protected from liquid spills and dirt, dust and crumbs. Also, I hate trackpads.
Getting an iPad for school. I personally like handwriting notes so the ability to flip the case around for quick transition is paramount. In a classroom I feel it would be weird and cumbersome to switch between the two. If they can make a magic keyboard folio that flips around, I would certainly buy it. I am kinda bummed I’m going to miss out on the trackpad and keys tho.
I was told by a Genius that the left usb port on the magic keyboard is only for charging. Can you confirm this? My impression of what you said here is both can be used for data.
Funny thing is that if your using the rule of not looking at the keyboard when typing (so that you can build muscle memory for keystrokes, you usually see this in typing lesson), you technically don’t need the backlighting on the keyboard, except for the function keys lol
Thank you very much for the review. Which one is more comfortable for use seating in the armchair or coach? As I don’t type seating at the table. Thank you in advance.
I have a question: what's going on with the long term durability of the 12.9 cellular iPad pro and does the magic keyboard case make it more durable, thanks for responding.
Snagged a keyboard folio for iPad Pro 11 2018 for $50 along with 2nd gen pencil. I like how it’s so small and you can wrap it around the back. If the magic keyboard had that I may consider it but I don’t really use iPad as laptop
You said the footprint of the Magic Keyboard was much bigger, but it's not. Both footprints are practically identical. The Magic Keyboard only *looks* bigger because the keyboard starts further back, however if you view them both from the side, they are the same.
I didn't experience having these kinds of gadgets that you're reviewing I can't even relate on what you're talking about these and that, but I just want to know and this channel is so perfect, who knows someday I might be able to buy this in the future. 😊 I will thank you by that time. Keep safe! 💕
I chose the Smart Keyboard Folio because I’ll be using my iPad more for note taking in class (in tablet mode, with the Apple Pencil). With the magic keyboard, the only way I can use it is to flip it upside down, with the keyboard up. I don’t like that, and I wouldn’t want to take my iPad off the case on a dirty surface. In my opinion, the Magic Keyboard is too expensive to not accomodate a tablet mode, when the iPad Pro is advertised as both.
Tej Wayne Magic keyboard is better. I just have the keyboard folio case to use as a case when I walk around my house with the iPad. I usually have the iPad in the magic keyboard sitting on the desk. Overall, I like the magic keyboard but they have different uses because the keyboard folio case acts more as a case.
Tej Wayne The main reason I like the magic keyboard is the touch pad. I also like how the keys are backlit but that’s more for show. I don’t really type in the dark. Lol
I bought the new MacBook Air because it works for what I use it for but I still will be getting the new iPad Pro just because the added keyboard with trackpad is awesome.
Great video! I already have the Logitech slim folio keyboard so I bought the Magic Trackpad and am quite pleased with this setup. And by the way, Go Green!!!!
In my opinion, the magic keyboard is a lot better, I ordered it along with the 4th generation 12.9 iPad Pro. I am hoping I don't experience any excessive battery drain issues that have been reported by some users.
I’d rather buy the keyboard folio and just keep an extra wireless mouse or trackpad in by bag when I need one. Because having to take the iPad off the magic keyboard then worrying about where to put the keyboard just sounds way too troublesome. I can’t believe Apple would ship that keyboard without a 360 hinge functionality. Times like this I wish Steve were back and pushing the engineers and designers to their limits when it came to user experience.
Well I don’t think you can use a case since it will block the smart connectors at the back of the ipad, but I wonder if a skin for your ipad can work and prevent some scratchs?
Smart Keyboard Folio with bluetooth mouse is fine for me i guess, Im not that of a typist and Magic Keyboard Case is too expensive for me, Thanks for the comparison it was very helpful!
Hey noah my name is Ron and im in 8th grade and we are learning with computers and right now im using the Ipad Pro 2018 11" and some assignments won't work on the Ipad because the operating system is appropriate for the assignments, so I was wondering to buy the new macbook air because I really like the keyboard and I want to do some light editing so please answer me what do you think about that (if it's a good decision )

Thank you very much for the review. Which one is more comfortable for use seating in the armchair or coach? As I don’t type seating at the table. Thank you in advance.
DOES THE NEW MAGIC KEYBOARD WORK WITH THE 2018 IPAD PRO??? PLEASE ANSWER ASAP!!!
@Mateusz Wojnarowicz Thank you so much! I just ordered mine so i wanted to make sure :P
Do you have the figure how much heavy the magic keyboard is when compared to smart keyboard folio? Thanks.
Can you use the old Ipad 11 inch Pro with the new magic keyboard or does it have to be Ipad 2020?
YESSS I’ve been waiting for this review !!!!
Does the battery drain faster since the keypad is powered by the iPad?
I swear his garage door looks like a green screen
Wait that's not a green screen?

Please advise me when choosing a size of 11 inches or 12.9 inches. ?
I have both and I have adapted to AMK, I can’t go back to the folio because the clicking sound to the slot bother me since I switched to AMK.
When I bought my iPad Pro 2020 12.9” I bought the smart folio keyboard to hold me off until the magic keyboard released. Now I have both.
Since you have both, which do you like better?
Tej Wayne Magic keyboard is better. I just have the keyboard folio case to use as a case when I walk around my house with the iPad. I usually have the iPad in the magic keyboard sitting on the desk. Overall, I like the magic keyboard but they have different uses because the keyboard folio case acts more as a case.
Tej Wayne The main reason I like the magic keyboard is the touch pad. I also like how the keys are backlit but that’s more for show. I don’t really type in the dark. Lol
Where can you purchase the magic keyboard for iPad 12.9? Amazon is saying not yet released ?
I bought the new MacBook Air because it works for what I use it for but I still will be getting the new iPad Pro just because the added keyboard with trackpad is awesome.
which one is better for students?
Wether Magic key board suites 2018 iPad Pro ?
I wish a different material would be used, it seems after a while it gets very very dirty and that annoys me
You gave me a good idea as far as choosing
Great video! I already have the Logitech slim folio keyboard so I bought the Magic Trackpad and am quite pleased with this setup. And by the way, Go Green!!!!
In my opinion, the magic keyboard is a lot better, I ordered it along with the 4th generation 12.9 iPad Pro. I am hoping I don't experience any excessive battery drain issues that have been reported by some users.
I hate the fact you have to go to settings for the light in the keyboard
Canaan Tolla I don‘t. It adjusts the lighting by itself and I never feel the need to manually adjust the brightness.
What is the ipads size in this video?
The best review!
Hey, does anyone know if you can use a case while using the magic keyboard for side protection?
Well I don’t think you can use a case since it will block the smart connectors at the back of the ipad, but I wonder if a skin for your ipad can work and prevent some scratchs?
VN Rays ah ok, thank you for the help :)
Smart Keyboard Folio with bluetooth mouse is fine for me i guess, Im not that of a typist and Magic Keyboard Case is too expensive for me, Thanks for the comparison it was very helpful!
I want to know if you can adjust the Ipad ( movig it further or nearer) when the smart keyborad folio is attached
Now this is what I’ve been waiting for!!!!
Heyy what do you think would be better for note taking and everyday use-apple pencil or logitech combo touch-I have ipad air 3.
Thanks for being straight up honest about your views unlike others
03:38-03:40 look how iPad moves. its annoying. It has balancing problem.
His wooden table is probably slightly warped so the surface isn’t exactly flat
What about a mouse with the smart folio?
Now that’s an interesting idea :)
Which size ipad is shown in this video?
Still in dilemma want to take 11 or 12.9💆🏻♂️ help me
Hey noah my name is Ron and im in 8th grade and we are learning with computers and right now im using the Ipad Pro 2018 11" and some assignments won't work on the Ipad because the operating system is appropriate for the assignments, so I was wondering to buy the new macbook air because I really like the keyboard and I want to do some light editing so please answer me what do you think about that (if it's a good decision )
I still watch your videos even do I don't have money to buy any of the products
Even if I don't have the iPads I still enjoy ur vids lol
Good comparison video, not much youtubes hav did this, good work
I'm still gonna watch this even though all hopes of me buying an iPad Pro is all but gone.
