Such a rich sound! My father had a Gibson from the 60's when I would visit him in the summer I would listen to him play for hours. He taught me my first cords on that particular guitar. This guitar reminds me of that Gibson. I now own over 50 high end guitars myself, and I would trade them all to have my fathers guitar! Thank you for those bringing me back to those memories!

Beautiful resonance! The rattle can be taken care of. 25.5 scale is actually the norm for dreadnoughts. Do my own setups and misc on my acoustics and love the bridge...never even knew that Gibson put a metal bridge on an acoustic. What a way to be able to dial in the intonation. Congratulations on finding that sweet dream!

I'd love to get my hands on a proper acoustic, I had a cheap one at home that my grandfather picked up from somewhere, but the frets were destroyed...

Gibson Dove, the guitar of my dreams. I almost bought one but I ended up getting a Gibson Firebird Acoustic. Same maple back and sides, same scale length 25 1/2”. I have the LR Bags VTC pickup. Mine is a 2015 so it still hasn’t “opened up” yet. But it’s getting there. I still want an old Dove…. 60’s, not the 70’s. I’d also like a Hummingbird from that time period. They both came out around the same time. Amazing instruments. Even the new Doves are amazing. I played one, I think a 2018, I could not put it down. Congrats on your acquisition and keep putting these old birds back together. Glad someone appreciates these old gems! Peace!

Unplugged is perfect! I was kinda disappointed in that Di tone. It was muffled, and lost that clarity on the high strings. I tried a lot of acoustic pickups in my older gibsons. Lr Baggs element was the only pickup that translated the acoustic tone correctly to a Di. Its pressure sensitive and really articulates.

you gotta love the dove , simply put an amazing sounding guitar . I owned a hummingbird in the mid 80s that I absolutly loved but sadly a freind picked it up one nite and the case was not buckled and , you guessed it , fell out and broke the neck right where it meets the head stock . getting to my point I was so devastated by it my dad and my freind who dropped it supprized me with a brand new dove early one morning while they were at my home playing some guitars my dad brought over . when I ask about the dove he handed it to me and said I hope this makes up for your loss and how your feeling ! and by the way your dad split the cost with me lol . awesome guitar I still have to this day . my dad is gone , my freind is gone but there memory will live forever through my awesome dove , and it is also a great conversation peice .

And a feedback buster for the sound hole as well. It doesn’t affect the projection of sound from the guitar without it amplified. Plus you don’t have to fish for picks dropped in the sound hole

I absolutely love vintage Gibson acoustics and your DOVE is fantastic.. I have a 67 Hummingbird, 67 SJ and a Gibson made 67 Epiphone Frontier. It is made very similarly to your Dove. Long scale ,maple back and sides and sounds very much like yours. My guitars have the narrow nut 1-9/16. Which I like just fine. Gibsons have their own sound. I like vintage Martins too, but for a lot of 60s folk and rock, the Gibsons are the bomb. Great video.

Know what ya mean about having to take a break to complete projects. Having over 300 (302 and counting) guitars myself, I know just the routine maintenance can be a full time job. And I don't have a youtube site to run, so I can only imagine how it is on your end. I must admit though that getting to see/hear/feel the fruits of your labor is worth every second of the time invested. I will never be able to play as well as you do ( can no longer feel my hands due to a really bad spinal cord injury), but at least I can visit your site to hear how they are supposed to sound. It's great seeing someone else that appreciates guitars and amps like you do.

  • @Bluuplanet

    Intonation...
It's pretty simple: the saddles should be adjusted to the point where the string is *exactly* double the pitch of the open string when played at the 12th fret.
If strings were as flexible as rope coming out of a wood jump rope handle, then the distance from the nut to the 12th fret would be exactly the same as from the 12th fret to the saddle.
But strings have stiffness; they're less like the jump rope and more like a fly rod you're whipping up and down from your wrist.
This means that the effective node is shortened slightly away from wherever the ends are held tight, whether at the bridge or a fret or the nut. And the stiffer the steel string, the more the foreshortening effect on the effective node.
The less stiffness there is, the closer the saddle location is to where it would be with "jump rope" flexibility.
The first string is the thinnest and is closest to that point; the second string has to be moved a bit farther away from the nut.
The third string is thicker, but it is typically a wound string and winding does not contribute to stiffness; the wire inside the winding is about the same diameter as the first string so the saddle is located in about the same position as the first string. (If the third string isn't wound, then the saddle is moved back farther than the second.)
And so on it goes, with the saddle being moved farther from the nut for each string as the core steel in the remaining strings gets progressively thicker.

I was listening thru my crappy laptop speakers, then I plugged in my ear buds and got wow'ed. I first thought you already plugged in the pickups and was stunned to realize your first part of playing was just the microphone aim'ed at the guitar. So clear! But to my ears when the pickups got plugged in, the gutiar lost some punch. Good combination with the microphone and the pickups. This changes my opinion of using a metal tune-a-matic bridge using plastic saddle pieces on acoustic guitar. Your guitar is the first time I've heard very clear precise tones using this type of bridge. Good add to your collection!

Thanks for that Mathew, Don here from Hamilton NZ on my Wife's tablet-SUSAN, In my time Iv'e owned a Hummingbird from the 80s and a much later Cutaway Gibson, both electric acoustic 's but they quite simply couldn't match the output volume ( acoustic) of my Chinese made Acoustic's, how Very interesting

Such a beautiful guitar. I have a 65 gibson heritage that's my main acoustic. It sounds like what all dreadnoughts want to grow up to sounds like. Great playing Aswell . Thanks for your videos.

Congrats on a wonderful guitar, and I love your playing! You treated this guitar with a great deal of respect during its renovation. A great acoustic guitar can be an inspiration. It seems that this one is inspiring you!

Thanks Matt for noodling instead of performing a song as a test of tonality & overall texture of that sweet Doves sound! Indeed a keeper!

I'm so glad to see the Dove back again it was a long wait but well worth it. It sounds first class, great tone and well played too. Most of my Electric guitars are Fenders but my acoustics are both Gibson a J-45 and a J-15. I really love playing them and I hope you get the same great joy out of yours as I do mine. Please do not let the Dove be a stranger to your videos I would love to hear you play it more. You have a great touch on that axe, keep it up. Thanks again.

The Neumann sounds great, pickup blend may help low mids cut in a mix and work in a live situation but I’d probably not use the pickup alone in a studio situation

Wow that’s an angels voice not a guitar!! That is probably the best acoustic I’ve ever heard and that includes a top of the range Martin!! That is a guitar to pass on to your grandchildren what a fantastic heirloom! Would I play it? Probably not simply because I couldn’t do it justice!! Keep up the good work Matthew

The K&K Pure Mini pickup needs a DI and/or pre-amp; there's no pre-amp built into it, unless most of the pickups that you find factory installed in guitars.

Beautiful sounding guitar, stunning tone. I could listen to that all day.
I thought the blended plugged in sound really complimented the guitar!
Great video, thanks for putting it together.

That sounds amazing! The low end is crazy and sounds so good, I wasn’t a big fan of the pick up though it sounded kind of muffled, also everyone needs a break now and again!
