  • In Feb 2021, we laid out some fresh straw for our Ruth Stout garden bed. We've been using this method to grow potatoes for about 3 year now. We took last year off, but now we're back at it - and its time to plant!
    This video here is how we laid down the straw: • Ruth Stout Gardening |...
    Planting and growing potatoes using this method is super easy, and come harvest season, you'll be glad you did it!

    Wow! I haven't heard about Ruth Stout since the 1970s. Rodale's Ruth Stout's No Work Garden. ...
    Thanks for revisiting her methods. Brings back wonderful memories. Elliot Coleman is still gardening away in Maine. We are a 350 acre working farm in Central New Hampshire. Third generation. Grass- fed beef/Haying/ Logging. I am all for lazy gardening that produces decent results. New Hampshire has a bumper crop of ticks! Waiting for a tick vaccine. It came out and then disappeared. I would be first in line! ~ Diane

      I love his beard!!! My hubby is a firefighter so he can't keep a beard. He does however have the big cheesy firefighter mustache lol and the tips of his "chops" are turning white. So I think he'd have a beautiful white beard if he could grow it out. Maybe after retirement 😁😍

    A lot of people don't realize that not all potatoes need hilling. Yukon gold or Chieftan are determinate and wont respond to hilling. German butterball are indeterminate and will respond to hilling. I do a modified Ruth stout method with wood chips, works well.

    Hi Rachel, and Todd. I just love it when the two of you are together. Rachel, the potato garden will do well in the rain. The soil will have moisture and have drainage. That is good when it is not raining, and the moisture is really good for all your plants. Thank you for sharing your plant video. God Bless you and Todd.stay safe. Depending on where you are, you should have plenty of time to reseed your carrots and beets 🥕. Cover them up with some cardboard or a wooden plank; helps me a lot with my germination rate. Good luck on your potatoes 🥔! I did the same thing with some store-bought potatoes that sprouted really fast on me. They already broke the ground and I take it as a good sign 🤗

    I started last fall to lay hay all over my garden, we have extra round bales of hay from our livestock. So this year I'm going to plant almost everything under hay. I can't water my garden because of it's location and I notice some of the things that were under the hay grew so much more.

      @@sandradelvecchio6894 it works decently in michigan our only issues are rattlesnakes but ive only seen 2 in the wild ever and I'm 57 and spend lots of time gardening and hiking/camping.
      I really don't worry about them they are so rare here.
      I told a park employee where I saw it and he actually had me take him there so maybe they could microchip it. He saw where it had been and planned to keep an eye out for it.
      One of these years I'm tempted to see if he ever got the chance to catch and chip it.
      I think we sometimes get brown recluse spiders but they are hitch hikers not residents.

      She's doing great. Took a long time for her to get home, with COVID. There were basically no flights to Viet Nam for months and months. Back home, she's enrolled in university now and just completed her first year. She's also started her own at home bakery shop. She bakes cookies and other sweet treats for people, and delivers them to customers to make some extra cash on the side.

    Maybe y’all could help me? I chitted potatoes I grew last year, and they sat for a few weeks...planted two weeks at least now-they are not coming through the straw. Can they get too dry to reproduce? They were not dehydrated completely...but shriveled and dried out really good...? Do they take longer to sprout through?

    So there are nematodes for ticks to, I haven’t tried them yet. I did get some but have to put them out. I have a fear of ticks, reason I have chickens! I also suspect the wild turkeys we have around kinda reduce the population a bit.

    • @1870s
      @1870s  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not that I've researched

    • @carriedulaney2191
      @carriedulaney2191 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The nematodes I am skeptical about, but the mix is supposed to take care of ticks as well as other pests we have been having issues with. Turkeys I have seen conflicting information on if they eat ticks, I did do the research years ago so who knows what they found now. However the flocks roosts in the trees behind our house so we just don’t discourage them. I have seen the years we have more turkeys foraging around the house during the winter we have less ticks but... that is completely antidotal. My chickens we can see a marked improvement in the backyard, in the area the ticks love the most. Once I let the girls free range back there we don’t find any ticks, otherwise you are guaranteed to find one or more. We have a LOT of predators so sadly my chickens can’t go around our whole property.

      Sure, I'd recommend getting your hands on old aged hay so hopefully the weed seed has died off. Or go with straw. Also it's very important to find a source that doesn't spray with herbicides.
