  • How We Plant Potatoes Using the Ruth Stout Method | Deep Mulch Gardening | Guten Yardening
In this video, we show you what we are planting and how to plant in our Ruth Stout bed.
This season marks the second season where we are growing potatoes in our modified Ruth Stout hay bed.
Last season was our first attempt at Ruth Stout gardening, and the potatoes we grew (Yukon Gold and Norland Red) were successful, but there were not as many as we would have liked.
We believe that each year, the decomposing hay is going to improve, and that should mean that this year’s planting should result in even more potatoes than the previous year.
This year, we planted three new to us varieties, Red Lasoda potatoes, Mega-Chip Kennebec Potatoes, and Yellow Finn potatoes. Each of these are mid-season potatoes that should take about 100 days to harvest.
We are so excited to see what a difference a year makes with our Ruth Stout bed, and to follow the progress of these potatoes.
    Thanks for watching.

We think so as well. Check out our full harvest video from last season if you want to see just how simple harvest is. :)

Looking forward to seeing the progress. Another channel I've watched is Wayland Smalley and he follows the Ruth Stout method with great results. The more different gardening methods I see the more I want to try. My next step is to talk my wife into selling our suburban home w/a small yard and buy something in the country. Of course that would also mean that I'd have to quit my job to tend to all the chickens and gardening chores which in turn means she'd have to get a second job.

Hello sir! Great to hear from you. We are really hopeful for a bigger harvest this year, since the hay is starting to decompose well. We will see.

Lots of different potatoes going in the ground should mean plentiful harvests in just a few months. :)

Grass clippings are something that ruth stout would also use. Since this method holds in moisture really well, I am wondering how you would fare using this in the heat. You are already having some great successes, so I would love to see what you could do with that. :)

I have access to chopped straw. Is there any advantage to using that over long straw?
