Happy birthday Ralph. We are now the same age, at least for a few months! As always, you give good advice. Even if it's things we already know, it's always good to hear it again from time to time. I hope your wife does not get discouraged from running because of her foot injury. She is lucky to have a coach right in her house 🤣

I started running about 7 years ago, so i never did it in the days of no gels or Garmin. Kudos to you, Paul, for getting out there and running! Thanks for watching the video and sharing!

Happy Birthday Ralph, I turned 72 last month and am still out there running. I enjoy your videos and agree with your advice. I’ve been using the run/walk and haven’t been injured at all this year despite running more miles than previous years. Plus it’s just more enjoyable and some days I find myself running more miles than I planned on running when I left the house. Thank you for the videos

    Happy Birthday!!
I don’t use an app for shoes, but I write the date in the shoe with a sharpie. Usually under the insert.

I really appreciate you advice. I've gone from a 5/1 ratio to a 3/1 and sometimes 1/1 ratio for my runs. It really helps fend off the fatigue especially in this Texas heat.

You're welcome! I'm glad you found ratios that work for you. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I agree with all your tips and experienced some of the pitfalls you mentioned in my long distance running. I took up long distance running after retiring at the age of 64. Worked my way up from 10 km races, to half-marathon and then to the full marathon. My full marathon journey started in 2019 at the age of 75; it was a DNF at 24 km. Now at the age 79 my record stands at 1 DNF and 3 successful finishes. My goal has been to "Finish without injury". There are three takeaways from my personal experience I can share: 1. Manage the weather conditions; 2. Manage the electrolyte balance and hydration throughout the race; 3. Manage the nutritional needs during the race. Next year I am thinking about a 30 km race in Hamilton, Ontario ( there are not many 30 km races). I have also registered for a full marathon in May next year. Having a target ahead is useful and I find that it has helped me stay healthy so far, as I practice to meet the goal of a successful finish without injury.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom, tips, and experiences with running. Your three takeaways are spot on. Like you, my race goal is always to finish without injury. Thanks again for watching the video and commenting.

being almost 69 i agree with all your tips. I run/walk/run since the late 80th and still do.......at the moment more freely than in my younger days, which means for the most part i dont `run with a watch and walk whenever i feel like walking. I have measured all my usual routes, so alwys know my distance and write it down for the hoes i wear on the runs

Thanks. my 200 pounds seems to flatten shoes out after 100 miles. I keep new shoes on hand to compare with two month old shoes so i don't get used to worn out midsoles. I avoid street running in favor of easy dirt trails...i think you are trail guy. I have tried running daily but every other day works better. I strength train on the alternate days. 61 yoa.

Keeping old shoes on hand makes good sense… than for the idea! I am a trail guy, but don’t get to do it as often as I like. I rarely run two days in a row, and like you, run every other day. Thanks for sharing!
